Urgent: 5.9-magnitude quake hits 140 km south of Fukue, Japan -- USGS

HONG KONG, May 3 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 jolted 140 km South of Fukue, Japan at 1154 GMT on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10.0 km, was initially determined to be at 31.4218 degrees north latitude and 128.8199 degrees east longitude.

Powerful earthquake shakes Indonesia; no injuries expected

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A powerful earthquake shook islands in eastern Indonesia on Wednesday evening, but no damage or injuries were expected.

The quake measured a preliminary magnitude 6.8 and was centered below the sea at a depth of 107 kilometers (67 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was located 205 kilometers (128 miles) northwest of the nearest city, Saumlaki, it said.

The earthquake triggered moderate shaking and was unlikely to cause injuries or economic losses, USGS said.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 260 million people, is frequently struck by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis because of its location on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

NEW YORK, May 8 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 jolted Mid-Indian Ridge at 20:45:31 GMT on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at 29.4323 degrees south latitude and 76.4736 degrees east longitude.

NEW YORK, May 12 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 jolted 169 km southeast of Lata, Solomon Islands at 22:41:15 GMT on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 125.0 km, was initially determined to be at 12.1 degrees south latitude and 166.5 degrees east longitude.
