Yellowstone Volcano Earthquake Swarm Update June 29

A swarm of more than 141 earthquakes is rattling Yellowstone National Park, geologists said.

Yellowstone - Sawmill Geyser Wakes Up After 5 Years on June 24th, July 21 Eruption [...]

Yellowstone Is Not Normal, It's Screaming, Harmonic Tremors Aug. 3 2021
[....]

The Daily Mail reports that the USGS recorded over 1000+ tremors at Yellowstone over the month of July, the most since a swarm of 1,100 in June of 2017: 1,000+ earthquakes rattle Yellowstone in July - the most in a single month since 2017

The researchers seem to want to downplay the activity by saying that it is due to groundwater movement rather than magma, but i'm not sure that ultimately means its less ominous.

Some points of interest from the article:

- 1,008 earthquakes in the park, with a whopping 764 beneath Yellowstone Lake.
- largest was an M3.6 located 11 miles below the lake's surface
- no changes in deformation style or thermal/gas emissions detected [although deformations were recorded during the 2017 swarm]
- July seismicity in Yellowstone was marked by seven earthquake swarms, which began on July 16. Along with those in the Yellowstone Lake, the University of Utah also found the other earthquakes hit in groups of 12, 14, 20, 24 and 20 [this last number may be a typo since it's a repeat, so perhaps it's 30?]

The absence of even moderate earthquakes above M5.5 is worrying. Hopefully seismic pressure in the coming days will be released more evenly with smaller earthquakes but there is a probablility of one strong earthquake.
