Close to the 1949 event:

The M8.1 Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands) Earthquake of August 22, 1949

Location and Magnitude

  • Local Date and Time: August 21, 1949 at 08:01:12 pm Pacific time
  • UT Date and Time: 1949-08-22 04:01:12 UT
  • Magnitude: MW 8.1; MS 8.1
  • Maximum Intensity: Modified Mercalli VII-VIII
  • Latitude: 53.62° N
  • Longitude: 133.27° W
Canada's largest earthquake (magnitude 8.1) since 1700, occurred on August 22, 1949 off the coast of BC. It occurred on the Queen Charlotte Fault (Canada's equivalent of the San Andreas Fault) - the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates that runs underwater along the west coast of the Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands) off the west coast of British Columbia. The shaking was so severe on the Haida Gwaii that cows were knocked off their feet, and a geologist with the Geological Survey of Canada working on the north end of Graham Island could not stand up. Chimneys toppled, and an oil tank at Cumshewa Inlet collapsed. In Terrace, on the adjacent mainland, cars were bounced around, and standing on the street was described as "like being on the heaving deck of a ship at sea". In Prince Rupert, windows were shattered and buildings swayed.

This eathquake is ...weird? ... how come an earthquake of 8 magnitude may be felt of 5 ???

There was an 8.3 magnitude earthquake in Baikal -Russian
An 8.3 magnitude earthquake occurred near Bolshoe Goloustnoe village in Baikal water area
IRKUTSK, June 8 - RIA Novosti. An 8.3 magnitude earthquake has occurred at Lake Baikal, the Irkutsk Region Ministry of Emergency Situations said.
The earth tremors were registered at 20:24 (15:24 Moscow time).

"The epicenter was 17 kilometers from Bolshoe Goloustnoe village in the water area of Lake Baikal. The intensity in the epicenter was 8.3 points. In the cities of the region it was felt up to five points", - is said in the message.

According to the unified duty control services of the Angara region, there were no casualties or damage. All infrastructure facilities are operating normally.

In the regional administrative center Irkutsk the intensity of this earthquake was 4.5 points, as Elena Kobeleva, director of Baikal branch of the United Geophysical Survey of Russia told RIA Novosti.

Maybe they mixed up magnitude with intensity ?
Or might be something else from above? ... had happend. But, had not been able to find related data to this event. Or that the sensors are not working properly, there have also been cases.

A giant meteorite fell on the Irkutsk Region

On Sept. 25, 2002 in the Irkutsk region near the Vitim River, a giant meteorite exploded at an altitude of 30 kilometers. The force of the explosion was equivalent to 200 tons of TNT. The Vitim meteorite became the second largest and most powerful impact that fell on Russia since the Tunguska meteorite in 1908. Geologists from Moscow discovered an area of 100 sq. km where trees were incinerated and felled, and fragments of a meteorite were also found.

The destruction of this celestial body was accompanied by a bright glow in the sky, a buzz and an instant flash that was observed at a distance of up to 150 km from the scene. Fortunately, the Vitim "stranger" ended his journey far from populated areas. But tremors, like during a strong earthquake, were felt by many locals.
Cash plea for space impact study

...
Vladimir Polyakov, of the Institute of Solar and Terrestrial Physics in Moscow, said: Specialists have no doubt that it is a meteorite that fell into the taiga on Thursday."
Middle-power Earthquake

Polyakov says there were more than 100 eyewitnesses to the event.

He added that scientists believed them. He said instruments rarely recorded the impacts of meteoroids and so eyewitnesses were practically the only source of information for such events.

Kirill Levi, vice-director of the Earth Crust Institute in Siberia, said: "The seismic monitoring station located near the event site recorded the moment of impact recording seismic waves comparable to a middle-power earthquake."

Vladimir Polyakov added that it was impossible to send a state-funded expedition to the site, which lies in Bodaibo district, Irkutsk region, without approval from the Meteorite Studies Center in Moscow.

Bodaibo residents say they witnessed the fall of a very large, luminous body, which looked like a huge boulder.
