Earthquakes around the world

Researchers have found a long tear in the earth near the epicenter of a strong earthquake that jolted the southern Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto early Saturday.

They believe the scattering of cracks, which start on a road and run into a rice paddy, trace the line of a fault that caused the tremor.

Hiroshima University Professor Emeritus Takashi Nakata and his team have been examining the area around Mashiki Town since the magnitude-7.3 earthquake.

They found the deviation that runs through a rice paddy is about 1.2 meters wide. The earth on one side of the line is elevated by 50 centimeters.

On the road next to the paddy, the biggest crack is 2 meters wide. The height difference between the ground on each side is 70 centimeters.

The researchers say the Futagawa and Hinagu faults both run through the area.

Nakata says a government panel of seismologists had expected that faults in the area would slip by up to 2 meters. He said the scale of the Saturday earthquake was nearly as big as the panel's estimate.

Japanese city blanketed in ‘mysterious foam’ after deadly earthquakes

The streets of a southern Japanese city became blanketed in foam after a devastating earthquake, close to its epicenter in Kumamoto, leaving residents baffled by the phenomenon which the authorities, busy with the disaster’s aftermath, found no time to explain.
The froth appeared shortly after disastrous tremors from a 7.3 magnitude quake shook the city of Fukuoka on Friday. Twitter users posted photos of the snow-like foam sheet and wondered what caused it.

The unexplained phenomenon affected the downtown Tenjin and Imaizumi areas of Fukuoka, according to reports.

Some speculated that it may be the result of a burst underground pipe caused by the earthquake. Others suggested it could have been common firefighting foam, although no fire trucks could be seen anywhere in the photos.

What could that be? Some kind of chemical reaction after outgassing?

Sea foam is caused by an unlikely mix of weather and ocean conditions. The protein and fat molecules that create the foam come from the breakdown of dead sea creatures, according to various scientific surveys.

Yes it looks like sea foam, but the question is, if the stuff in this case is really coming from the sea or not, since the locals seem to be baffled.
Maps says that the city is on the coast, so it could indeed be just ordinary sea foam:

Right after several large earthquakes in Japan, a M7.8 occurred in Ecuador. This might be an illustration of the 'reverberation' mentioned by the Cs.

Japan and Ecuador are both located next to the Pacific plate which moves towards the East, the earthquakes in Japan suggest a substantial move of the Pacific plate leading to a subduction in Japan (the Pacific plate slips under the Eurasian continental plate) and since the plate can't be stretched much, it's western edge is also moving away from the American continental plate leading to a dip slip quake in Equador.

People are saying that the installed fire fighting equipment in the parking lot broke and the foam fire extinguishing agent burst in the area from Kumamoto earthquake.

One wonders how and why relatively "small" earthquakes, like the recent one in japan, seem to cause such tremendous movements, shifts, cracks and landslides in recent months and years? I'm not really aware or noticed that earthquakes of that magnitude had such impacts lets say 20 years ago or longer.

How often in the the last couple of years have we heard that relatively small earthquakes caused movements, shifts and cracks over very wide areas, even whole landmasses? Quite often as far as I know, compared to over 20 years ago...

So either the same magnitudes cause more movements now for some reason, compared to years ago, or something in the measuring (or publishing) of the magnitude data has changed?

This may very well be the case, that there is an increase in destructivity, but as far as I understand, it is necessary to also consider how deep down the earthquake happened, and not just look at the Richter scale number. If a quake is near the surface it can wreak more havoc than one deep down, even though the actual shaking/quaking has less force.
