Earthquakes around the world

● M 5.0 -28 km Southwest of Zihuatanejo Guerrero
The seismic sensors of SkyAlertMx (below) application that sends earthquake alerts to users are damaged after the passage of Hurricane Otis, there was an earthquake recently in Zihuatanejo Guerrero is at least 200 km from Acapulco, a coastal city badly damaged, also with wifi / electricity problems, which would not surprise me if the sensors of the National Seismological and others were damaged.

Zihuatanejo earthquake update:
SSN adjusts magnitude 5.0 to 4.4 with epicenter 28 km southwest of Zihuatanejo, #Guerrero.

Connectivity of @REDSkyAlert is limited in Guerrero due to the devastating passage of #Otis. Due to rains and winds, the network is affected from Petatlán to Cuajinicuilapa.

When conditions permit, maintenance work will be carried out as a priority to restore the operation of our sensors.

We appreciate your understanding and support! 🫶🏼🧡

It mentions that there are problems in the recovery work at SASMEX's communications sites and that it may take some time because the roads and highways were damaged by the passage of Hurricane Otis.

Also that if there were a
strong earthquake with an epicenter near the sensors that may be damaged, it would not be possible to issue the alert to the population.

This seismic alert SASMEX is the one that warns Mexico City among others, thus to population to give them time to prepare/evacuate the buildings.
Preliminary report on the current status of the Mexican Seismic Alert System @SASMEX due to Hurricane #Otis damage.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT OCTOBER 25_2023

Low levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. We see that there is an increase in the number of earthquakes with respect to the previous 24 hours. In fact the number has increased since October 22. Volcano Reykjanes has contributed with 297 quakes below magnitude 2 of the 861 quakes below magnitude 2 recorded in the past 24 hours. Iceland recorded a light earthquake M4.6 and ocurred in the Reykjanes volcano region.

Most of the highest magnitude earthquakes were concentrated in the Western Pacific, in fact a cluster occurred from Papua New Guinea (M5.2) to the Solomon Islands (M5.1). As for the Atlantic Ocean, the activity in the Sandwich Islands continues to release energy, which suggests that the possibility of a significant earthquake decreases for the South American region, especially in Chile.

Earthquake M5.0 in Mexico was updated to magnitude 4.4. Let us hope that this seismic activity is not a precursor. It is worrisome that the seismic alarms in Guerrero that warn Mexico City of a major earthquake (>M6) have broken down with the catastrophic passage of Hurricane Otis.

Finally, the map below shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. It is evident how the energy is moving. SSGEOS warns about the possibility of a significant event.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT OCTOBER 26_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. Earthquake M6.1 recorded by BMKG was updated to M5.5 at 294 km ENE of Lospalos, Timor Leste. Again, most of the highest magnitude earthquakes were concentrated in the Western Pacific: From the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia (M5.9) to the Balleny Islands in South Australia (M5.6) An evident seismic clustering can be seen as SSGEOS points out in its latest forecast.

Earthquake M5.5 hit Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lately we have seen seismic activity in Africa ranging from mild to very strong, as was the case in Morocco in North Africa. While the region of Iran in ME continues to record light to strong activity, today this country was shaken by an M5.1 earthquake. Similarly, Mexico continues with light seismic activity in the southeast, this time in Chiapas, on the border with Guatemala.

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. Unlike yesterday, the energy did not follow an appreciable line but activity was concentrated in the Western Pacific Ocean.

Fagradalsfjall volcano recorded 399 quakes below magnitude 2 in the past 24 hours. The number of recorded earthquakes increased again with 152 more earthquakes than in the past 24 hours. Mother Earth is sending us signals that she is not happy.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT OCTOBER 28_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. Afghanistan recorded M5.1, M4.5 & M4.5 earthquakes in the same region where the four M6.3 earthquakes that devastated the city of Herat occurred. Let's hope this activity is not a precursor of another significant earthquake. In fact, there is no longer much to destroy, other than to make the lives of the people living there even more difficult.

According Reliefweb: "to date, 1,384 people (759 females and 625 males) are reported to have been killed and 1,853 people injured (1,137 females and 716 males) by the earthquakes. Women and children are overly represented within reported casualties. Assessments completed to date indicate that 3,067 homes have been affected across Zindajan, Injil, Kushk / Rabat-e-Sangai, Ghulan, Herat and Khosan districts, including 2,499 which have been completely destroyed".

M4.5 earthquake hits Democratic Republic of the Congo. This was the second earthquake in a few days.

Light earthquakes continue along the west coast of Mexico. SASMEX reconnects 73% of seismic sensors in Guerrero after 'Otis'.

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. Significant seismic events continue to be recorded in the Southwest Pacific Ocean region. There are two lines of seismic activity. The first goes from Afghanistan to the Mariana Islands and the second from the Indian Ocean to Tonga. Isolated significant earthquakes in Alaska, California and Chile.

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. An M6.0 earthquake occurred in Vanuatu, which follows a cluster of M5+ earthquakes that occurred in the region, including the M5.0 earthquake in the Kermadec Islands in New Zealand today.

Afghanistan recorded a moderate M4.8 earthquake according to SSGEOS these earthquakes can already be considered as aftershocks of the M6.3 events.

Another earthquake was recorded in East Africa. Now in Zambia with a magnitude 4.6. Light seismic activity continues on the west coast of Mexico from the coast of Jalisco to Oaxaca with M4+ earthquakes.
Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. Now we can see a line of earthquakes that goes from the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia to the Indonesian region.

Anomalous" seismic activity recorded in Cuba

The National Center for Seismological Research (Cenais) of Cuba reported that it has detected this Sunday an "anomalous" seismic activity in Guantanamo (east) by recording 222 tremors, with a magnitude of up to 3.3 on the Richter scale, and with no reports so far of human or material damage.

The earthquakes were registered since 1:30 local time (5:30 GMT) this Sunday and three of them were perceptible in the municipality of Yateras.

This is the third anomalous seismic situation reported so far this year in eastern Cuba, according to the Cenais report, and points out that the National Seismological Service "remains alert, monitoring this activity".

The previous anomalous seismic event occurred last July, when 255 tremors - not perceptible - with magnitudes between 0.4 and 3.2 on the Richter scale were recorded south of the town of Moa, in Holguín province (east).

The greatest seismic activity in Cuba is located in the eastern zone and is related to a fault located on the limit of the North American plate, to which the Caribbean country belongs, and another on the neighboring island of Hispaniola, a territory shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Cuba is located in a region where different tectonic fault systems converge, where earthquakes of great magnitude have been recorded in recent decades.

Among them, one on May 25, 1992, with a magnitude of 6.9, which was felt in the eastern half of the country, and the one on January 28, 2020, with a magnitude of 7.1, located in the vicinity of the Cayman Islands but felt throughout Cuba.
