Earthquakes around the world

At least 128 dead as strong quake rocks north-western Nepal

Helicopters and ground troops rushed to help people hurt in a strong earthquake that shook north-western Nepal districts just before midnight on Friday, killing at least 128 people and injuring dozens dozens more, officials said.

Troops were also clearing roads and mountain trails that were blocked by landslides triggered by the earthquake. Helicopters flew in medical workers and medicines to the hospitals there.

Prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal also flew in on a helicopter with a team of doctors.

In Jajarkot district, where the quake’s epicentre was, 92 people were confirmed dead and another 55 injured, Mr Kadayat said.

The quake killed at least 36 people in neighbouring Rukum district, where numerous houses collapsed, and at least 85 injured people already had been taken to the local hospital, he said.

Security officials worked with villagers all throughout the night in the darkness to pull the dead and injured from fallen houses.

The quake, which hit when many people already were asleep in their homes, was felt in India’s capital, New Delhi, more than 800 kilometres (500 miles) away.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 and occurred at a depth of 11 miles.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 04_2023

Low levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. The death toll from the M5.6 earthquake in Nepal has risen to 157 according to AP, many of the victims were crushed by the collapse of their homes as they slept. About 1,500 people have died in almost a month due to earthquakes in Afghanistan and Nepal. According to UN officials more than 90% of the people killed by the earthquakes in western Afghanistan were women and children.

The number of earthquakes recorded in the past 24 hours dropped to 1105 after 1736 on November 3rd. This was mainly due to the decrease in seismic activity of the Reykjanes (117 eq.) and Fagradalsfjall (81 eq.) Volcanoes

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. We observed seismic clusters in Southeast Asia and Central Asia as well as isolated earthquakes in South America.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 06_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A magnitude 5.3 aftershock struck Nepal on Monday, marking the second quake in just three days following the M5.6 on November 03. Police reported that the latest quake caused injuries to some people and further damaged houses already weakened by the previous quake. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Santosh Roka, 78 of the 153 people who lost their lives in the quake on Friday were children. This time the earthquake occurred at 16:46 pm local time.

Moderate earthquakes occurred in the West Pacific and Central Chile, while a light earthquake shook Venezuela, this earthquake and the one that occurred in the Central Mid Atlantic Ocean with M5.5 is a sign that the energy is moving towards the Caribbean and Atlantic area. This can be seen more clearly in the following map.

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. We see a line of seismic activity running from Central America (Guatemala) to the mid-Atlantic ridge. In South America, earthquakes occurred in Peru (M4.3) and Chile (M5.2).In Asia we see a line of seismic activity running from Nepal to the Kermadec Islands region of New Zealand.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 07_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. Most of this activity occurred in the western Pacific Ocean, mainly between the Solomon Sea and Coral Sea regions, where an earthquake of at least M7+ is expected.

The highest magnitude earthquake occurred in the Mariana Islands with M5.6 while in the Central Asian region. Xinjiang China was shaken by a M5.4 earthquake. It is estimated that about 4 million people were exposed to this shock (level II or higher MMI or Modified Mercalli intensity) according to scientific estimates published by the USGS. So far, no casualties or damage have been reported.

An M5.1 earthquake shook Ecuador and was also felt in Colombia. So far no aftershocks have been recorded, so it can be considered that this earthquake may be a precursor of a larger event. The risk of aftershocks decreases with time.

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. Panama, Peru, Ecuador and Chile had seismic activity that was light to moderate, while in Southeast Asia the activity was mainly moderate.

Shallow M5.3 earthquake hits near Mentone, western Texas

This seismic event stands as the fifth strongest earthquake on record in Texas. It also marks the most significant earthquake to hit the state since the same region experienced a magnitude 5.4 quake on November 16, 2022, almost exactly one year ago.

More than 25 earthquakes have been recorded in this part of Texas over the past 7 days and 46 over the past 30 days. The quake was preceded by M2.6 on October 31. It was followed by M3.2 at 10:30 UTC on November 8, M3.4 at 10:31 UTC and 4 earthquakes with magnitudes lower than 3 by 10:57 UTC.

West Texas is distinguished by having the highest concentration of fault zones within the state. It is also recognized for its engagement in hydraulic fracturing, a method where fluids are injected into the subterranean layers to extract oil and natural gas, a process which has been linked to the increased frequency of induced seismicity. Studies suggest that the injection of wastewater from fracking operations into deep geological formations can elevate subsurface pressures, potentially triggering earthquakes along existing faults.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 08_2023

Very high levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Banda Sea. There was no Tsunami danger and it is estimated that 92000 people could feel the strong earthquake in the adjacent regions. So far three M5+ aftershocks (M5.0, M5.1 & M5.1) and one M6+ aftershock (M6.7) have been recorded. There was also a precursor of M6.7 and an earthquake northeast of the Banda Sea, possibly related, with a magnitude 5.3.

The energy from the M7.1 earthquake will take a little longer to reach South America than it took to reach the Kamchatka Peninsula region. The Kuril Islands recorded an M5.6 earthquake and moderate to strong activity is expected in Alaska.

Shallow M5.3 earthquake near Mentone, western Texas, stands as the fifth strongest earthquake on record in Texas. There have been no reports of damage or injuries.

Fagradalsfjall volcano recorded 53 earthquakes of up to magnitude 2.7 while Reykjanes volcano 140 earthquakes of up to magnitude 3.4 Clear Lake volcano in California recorded a seismic swarm of 36 earthquakes of up to magnitude 1.3 The volcanic activity is contributing to the increase of recorded earthquakes. In the past 24 h there were 1131 earthquakes according to Volcanodiscovery data.

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. Significant seismic activity occurred mainly in the Banda Sea region of Indonesia and isolated light earthquakes in Azerbaijan-Iran border region, Fiji, Sumatra and Mariana Islands.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 09_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. After the M7.1 earthquake in the Banda Sea, seismic activity continues to be concentrated in Southeast Asia. M5+ earthquakes occurred in Papua New Guinea, again in Amahai, Indonesia and in Vanuatu. For the analyst Jesús Ramos, the 6.7 & 7.1 earthquakes that occurred 59 seconds apart caused a big rupture within the Australian Plate where the earthquakes took place and its convergence with the Pacific Plate.
Indo-Australian-plate-with-the-boundaries-and-forces-used-in-the-modeling-The-large.png
This rupture will have repercussions eastward first in the New Zealand region and westward in the Indian Ocean region with the possibility of further M7+ and in the worst case M8 earthquakes.

The number of earthquakes in the past 24 hours increased to 1464 earthquakes. This increase is mainly due to volcanic activity. According to Volcano earthquake report: Reykjanes volcano recorded 359 earthquakes between magnitud 0.1 - 4.8. Brennisteinsfjöll volcano recorded 47 earthquakes between magnitud 0.1 - 3.0 Fagradalsfjall volcano recorded 51 earthquakes between magnitud 0.1 - 4.2 and Clear Lake volcano recorded 28 earthquakes between magnitud 0.2 - 1 3

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. We observed a clear line of seismic activity running from Iceland to the Fiji Islands. Light to Moderate earthquakes occurred in South America with the 5.1 earthquake in Peru being the highest magnitude.

Isn't the Banda Sea near the old Krakatoa?

10 interesting facts about the Banda Sea

I cannot copy-paste the article due to restrictions to do so, but hereafter what it is said about Banda Sea and Krakatoa (5th fact: Banda Sea is more prone to frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes):
The Bansa Sea is home to several active volcanoes, includig the infamous Kraratoa, which erupted in 1883 and caused one of the deadliest volcanic disasters in history.

The Banda Sea is located within the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is a region characterized by high levels of volcanic and seismic avtivity. THe Pacific Ring of Fire is where many of the world's tectonic plates meet and interact, creating a dynamic and constantly changing geological landscape.

I do not know if it is relevant, but maybe the 2,000 kilometers distance pointed by @Ryan is not that large considering how everything is connected, especially in this region.
