WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 13_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A M6.1 earthquake ruptured in the Bismarck Sea just in the region that in the past 24 hours recorded light to moderate seismic activity (between M4+ and M5.9). Some 690,000 people were exposed to the shock, according to USGS, and no casualties or material damage are reported. This earthquake hit under water in the Bismarck Sea, 68 kilometers (42 mi) off the coast of Papua New Guinea, 151 kilometer west-northwest of Kokopo in East New Britain.

A new earthquake shook East Africa. This time it happened in Uganda with an M4.9 earthquake. This was the fifth African country (after DR Congo, Zambia, South Sudan and Ethiopia) within the African Valley Rift that has been shaken in the last weeks.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours decreased to 1386 earthquakes. This was mainly due to the reduced activity of Reykjanes volcano. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity were:
Brennisteinsfjöll (39 quakes between mag 0.1-3.8) Fagradalsfjall (88 quakes between mag 0.1-2.3), Krísuvík (53 quakes between mag 0.1-2.3), Reykjanes (393 quakes between mag 0.1-2.6),

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. We see seismic activity concentrated in Central Asia where light earthquakes occurred in Iran, Tajikistan, Mongolia, Turkey and India. Seismic silence for earthquakes greater than magnitude 5 continues along the Ring of fire in the Americas.

8WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 14_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A M6.1 earthquake shook southern Sri Lanka. This earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean, so no casualties or damage were reported. On the other hand a new sequence has begun in the Bismarck Sea. Five earthquakes of M5+ were recorded in the last hours.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours decreased to 1231 earthquakes. This was mainly due to the reduced activity of Reykjanes volcano. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity were:
Fagradalsfjall (80 quakes between mag 0.1-2.4) Reykjanes (328 quakes between mag 0.1-3.7), Brennisteinsfjöll (26 quakes between mag 0.1-2.2) Clear Lake (32 quakes between mag 0.2-2.6)

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 15_2023

Low levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A new M5.0 earthquake occurred in the Banda Sea area in Indonesia where two powerful M6.1 and M7.1 earthquakes hit. This earthquake is a foreshock of these, although there is still the possibility that it is a new sequence that could conclude in another M6+ or in the worst case M8+ earthquake. Further to the west of Indonesia, a light M4.8 earthquake was recorded.

For earthquake analyst Jesus Ramos the M6.1 earthquake south of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean yesterday could trigger a M6+ and in the worst case M8 earthquake for the region comprising the Bay of Bengal, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines. A sign that this is about to happen is if an M6+ earthquake hits the region of the Kermadec Islands New Zealand, Fiji or Tonga in the next 48 hours.

Should this event occur, we would see the energy shift towards South America but also towards the Hindu Kush and Europe (see plate boundaries).
shutterstock-2209458489.png

So far, light earthquakes have predominated in the last 24 hours. The M4.3 earthquake in Afghanistan occurred very close to the area of Tajikistan which recorded an M5.3 earthquake yesterday.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours decreased to 1211 earthquakes. This was mainly due to the reduced activity of Reykjanes volcano. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity were:
Fagradalsfjall (100 quakes between mag 0.1-2.3), Reykjanes (255 quakes between mag 0.1-2.9) Hrómundartindur (23 quakes between mag 0.4-2.1)

UPDATE:
WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 15_2023

Three new earthquakes occurred at the end of November 15. This would place the seismic activity at moderate levels. An earthquake with preliminary magnitude M6.2 (BMKG) shook northern Indonesia. The earthquake was adjusted to M5.7 by USGS and another agencies. The M5.0 earthquake in Chile breaks the seismic silence that was occurring in the last days in the Americas while the M5.1 earthquake in Fiji occurs in the region where an M6+ is expected to occur in response to the M6.1 earthquake south of Sri Lanka.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 16_2023

Low levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. An M5.0 earthquake shook eastern Indonesia. This followed the strong M5.7 earthquake that shook the Sulawesi Sea yesterday. The M5.0 quake occurred within the island but there were no reports of damage or casualties.

Something interesting is happening between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Moderate to strong earthquakes have occurred at both ends of the island, could it be that a significant earthquake is brewing? Both plates collide with each other and this energy is having a response on the island occupied by West New Guinea (Indonesia) and Papua New Guinea.
shutterstock-2209458489.png

Another energy movement that is happening is between the Reykjanes Peninsula and the Svalbard Islands. So far only very light earthquakes have been recorded on the Norwegian side.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours slightly increased to 1241 earthquakes. This was mainly due to the increased activity of Fagradalsfjall volcano. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity were:
Clear Lake (23 quakes between mag 0.3-2.2), Fagradalsfjall (143 quakes between mag 0.1-2.6), Krísuvík (43 quakes between mag 0.1-2.9) Reykjanes (255 quakes between mag 0.1-4.3)

Owen Fracture Zone is a deformation of the Earth's crust. As the Indo-Australian and Arabian plates rub up against each other the Earth's crust cracks and deforms. The Owen Fracture Zone mainly creates earthquakes, which are a result of the friction occurring as the two plates grind up against each other. Think about rubbing two cookies together. Due to the friction the cookies will resist movement and will begin to crumble and crack. Although the Earth's crust will not fall into pieces it does crack and crumble at the transform boundaries. Just like the cookies, the Earth's crust will resist movement, and when it finally gives way an earthquake will happen.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 17_2023

High levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A preliminary M7.2 earthquake
(PHIVOLCS) struck the Philippines, which was revised to magnitude 6.7 by USGS. This quake was already expected in the region as a response to the M6.1 south of Sri Lanka.
This earthquake hit under water in the Sulawesi Sea, 25 kilometers (16 mi) off the coast of The Philippines, 60 kilometer south-southwest of General Santos in Soccsksargen. The center of this earthquake had an intermediate depth of 78 km.

According to USGS an estimated 14 million people felt the shaking. Severe shaking and likely moderate to heavy damage may have been experienced by an estimated 4,810 people. (Modified Mercalli Intensity level VIII of X)

Hours before the M6.7 earthquake in the Philippines, a strong M5.7 earthquake occurred in Myanmar, which also occurred in response to the Sri Lanka earthquake. Finally a new M5+ earthquake occurred on the island of West New Guinea (Indonesia) and Papua New Guinea.

After the M6.7 earthquake in the Philippines, we will have to wait for the response in Central and South America as well as Central Asia and to a lesser extent Eastern Europe.

After the M6.7 earthquake in the Philippines, we will have to wait for the response in Central and South America (Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Colombia and Chile up to M6+) as well as Central Asia and to a lesser extent Eastern Europe. According to analyst Jesús Ramos, an earthquake of up to M6.8 could be expected in Japan or the Kuril Islands and up to M5+ in the northwest coast of the USA, Baja California y southeast Mexico. Let's wait and see.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours decreased to 1162. This was mainly due to the decreased seismic activity of Fagradalsfjall and Reykjanes volcanoes. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity were:
Brennisteinsfjöll (14 quakes between mag 0.1-1.6), Clear Lake (16 quakes between mag 0.3-2.1), Fagradalsfjall (111 quakes between mag 0.1-2.6) Reykjanes (139 quakes between mag 0.1-3.0)
1700265006429.png

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. We see a line of seismic activity that runs from Central Asia (Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Xinjiang) to the islands Kermadec. Seismic silence for earthquakes >M5 continues in Central America.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 18_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. An M5.5 earthquake shook the Bismarck Sea again. As can be seen in the corresponding map, four M5+ earthquakes have occurred in that region after M6.1, which was also preceded by several M5+ earthquakes.

According to the latest Analysis of Jesus Ramos, the energy of the M6.7 earthquake in the Philippines could still generate a significant seismic event of between M7 and M8 mainly towards the areas of Java, Jakarta, Sumatra, Indonesia and towards the east in New Zealand, Vanuatu, Tonga and Fiji. However, if the energy is distributed northward toward Japan, the Kamchatka Peninsula and Alaska with a M6+ earthquake, this would mitigate strong seismic activity in the expected areas of Southeast Asia.

The area of the Philippines, Manila, Guam and the Mariana Islands are directly correlated with seismic activity in Mexico and Central America this is due to the collisions of the Pacific Plate with the Cocos Plate. On the other hand, seismic activity in the region of Fiji and the Kermadec Islands has incidence in South America, mainly in Ecuador, Chile, Peru and Argentina.

It is possible that an M5+ and in the worst case scenario an M6+ earthquake could occur in Mexico and a sign of this would be the seismic activity occurring in Hawaii and if they reach magnitude 4+.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours decreased to 983. This was mainly due to the decreased seismic activity of Fagradalsfjall and Reykjanes volcanoes. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity were:
Clear Lake (20 quakes between mag 0.5-1.2) Fagradalsfjall (130 quakes between mag 0.1-2.6), Reykjanes (164 quakes between mag 0.1-3.0),
Update Reykjanes volcano: No significant changes
- Rift in Grindavik as days go by gets bigger
- Probability of an eruption remains high
- Where and when, on land or at sea, is still unclear.

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. The seismic activity was mainly concentrated in the Indonesian region. Slight to strong earthquakes have occurred in the past 24 hours. Energy from the M6.7 earthquake in the Philippines is being distributed to the Kamchatka Peninsula and Central Asia. Also first impacts are occurring in South America (Ecuador, Colombia) Seismic silence for earthquakes >M5 continues in Mexico and Central America.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 19_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. The energy from the M6.7 earthquake in the Philippines is being distributed towards the Japan region as expected, which takes pressure off Southeast Asia where an M7 or worse case M8 earthquake was expected.
if the energy is distributed northward toward Japan, the Kamchatka Peninsula and Alaska with a M6+ earthquake, this would mitigate strong seismic activity in the expected areas of Southeast Asia.
The region of Japan has recorded light to strong earthquakes in the last hours. The sequence started with the M5.9 earthquake in the Mariana Islands and continued its movement towards the Izu Islands (M4.8) and Katsuren-haebaru (M5.1) to conclude with a M6.0 earthquake in Yokohama. This way the energy will continue on its way to Kamchatka and Alaska and this means good news for more populated areas of Southeast Asia.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours increased to 1031 . This was mainly due to the increased seismic activity of Krísuvík volcano. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity were:
Clear Lake (19 quakes between mag 0.2-1.4) Fagradalsfjall (115 quakes between mag 0.1-2.3), Krísuvík (49 quakes between mag 0.1-3.7), Reykjanes (132 quakes between mag 0.1-2.1)

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. We see the concentration of seismic events in the Western Pacific with light earthquakes ranging from the Hindu Kush to Southeast Asia, mainly in the region of Indonesia and as far as Vanuatu. In the Americas, seismic silence continues for earthquakes greater than M5+ Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Argentina have recorded light activity not exceeding M4.5 not so Peru that recorded a M4.7 earthquake.

The southeast of Mexico is registering light seismic activity, several M4+ earthquakes have been registered and so far the highest magnitude has been 4.8 in Veracruz.

An isolated earthquake occurred in Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 20_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A magnitude 5.2 aftershock of the M6.7 earthquake of last November 17 was recorded in Mabini Philippines. Subsequently, another M5.2 earthquake shook the city of Burias further north. A similar situation occurred from the Tazman Sea to the Coral Sea. Southwest of New Zealand an M5.2 earthquake was recorded and hours later an earthquake shook the island of Tonga. It is in this region that an M6+ earthquake is expected in response to the M6.7 earthquake in the Philippines. It is worth mentioning that this earthquake in the Philippines was recorded as 7.2 and later updated.

Energy is starting to move into the Hindu Kush and Eastern Europe. Yesterday Nepal and Xinjiang China recorded light activity. Today Iran and Italy also recorded light activity. What should be emphasized is that the M4.8 earthquake in Italy occurred at a considerable depth of almost 411 km.

The Dutchsinse rule of Depth to magnitude, tells us that for every 100 km we have to add 0.2 magnitude to the original magnitude. So, a M5.6 earthquake (4*0.2=0.8+4.8) could happen in Italy in the next days. Let's hope it doesn't happen, an earthquake in Italy M5+ is not the same if it happens in Japan, Chile, or Mexico for example. It would cause damage in Italy.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours have a slightly increase (from 1031 to 1040) According Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity were:
Clear Lake (21 quakes between mag 0.3-1.8), Fagradalsfjall (160 quakes between mag 0.1-2.2), Kilauea (29 quakes between mag 0.1-2.3) Reykjanes (78 quakes between mag 0.1-2.7)
quakes-at-volcanoes-20112023.jpg

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. There is not much saturation of seismic activity in one area. As mentioned the Philippines region has registered the highest magnitude activity in the past 24 hours and in the Americas, Chile and Mexico continue to register light activity which can be said to be common. So far no earthquakes greater than magnitude 5 have been recorded in Mexico and Central America. Seismic activity in Hawaii remains in the M2-M3 range.
