A minor sinkhole develops on Crater Rim Dr. to Hawai's Volcano National Park.

UPDATE(5 p.m. on Friday) – The sinkhole on Crater Rim Drive inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has been repaired.

“Mahalo nui loa to our dedicated Roads crew for coming in on their holiday to repair a small sinkhole that opened up on Crater Rim Drive near Kilauea Military Camp on Fourth of July,” the National Park Service wrote on Facebook. “They worked into the evening to repair this section of road. Mahalo nui loa to for our law enforcement team who helped divert traffic and made sure visitors were safe. Awesome job, Team!”

(BIVN) – Although there have been no closures within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park directly related to the ongoing unrest at Kīlauea volcano, the sudden appearance of a hole closed Crater Rim Drive on Thursday.

“Heads up for Thursday July 4,” wrote Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on social media. “A small hole has appeared on Crater Rim Drive West in front of Kilauea Military Camp and traffic is being diverted.”

“Please heed all traffic control signs, go slow and watch out for workers,” HVNP wrote. “Mahalo!”

“We’re just going to let this sink in…” commented the HVNP social media team, as it posted a photo of the hole on X.

Kīlauea volcano is not erupting. Earthquake counts in the upper East Rift Zone remain above background levels.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JULY 07_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. A very strong magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred in the Philippine Sea 205 km from Japan at a depth of 571 km. Deep earthquakes are common in this region of the Philippine Sea. No aftershocks have been recorded so far and no special alert was issued for this event. The energy of this M6.2 earthquake will move northward, especially toward the Kamchatsk Peninsula and Alaska, while southward toward the region comprising Indonesia and as far as the Kermadec Islands and New Zealand.

This earthquake occurs after two days of low seismic activity (July 5 and 6).
chrome_screenshot_7 jul. 2024 7_16_31 p. m. CST.png

Two magnitude 5.5 earthquakes shook the Kamchatsk Peninsula, the first one at 11:55 UTC, nine hours before the Philippine Sea earthquake and the second one at 20:15 UTC, fourteen minutes after the M6.2 earthquake.

This second earthquake is probably an aftershock of the first M5.5 earthquake, although it may also be a precursor of a larger event. Let's wait and see in the next few hours.

● M 5.5 - 77 km SSW of Ust’-Kamchatsk Staryy, Russia/ 20:15:49 UTC/ 73.4 km depth/ USGS

In the past 24 hours, there were 806 quakes of magnitudes up to 6.2:
  • 1 quake above magnitude 6
  • 3 quakes between magnitude 5 and 6
  • 26 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
  • 111 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4
  • 224 quakes between magnitude 2 and 3
  • 441 quakes below magnitude 2 that people normally don't feel.
2024-06-30-overview.png

As mentioned above, the absence of an M6+ earthquake despite the planetary and lunar geometries, is likely due to the absence of a strong interplanetary magnetic field. It was not until July 5th that 11.67nT and a solar wind density of more than 15 p/cm³ was reached.
Earth, Moon, Sun lunar geometry occurred at 22:23 UTC on July 5 BUT the geomagnetic field has been quiet to unstable during the last 72 hours. The IMF maintained a Bt value of no more than 6nT and it was not until July 4th that it reached 10nT. The solar wind speed has been around 400 km/s. It is possible that these factors are contributing to low levels of seismic activity.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JULY 08_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours.

● M 4.7 - 97 km WSW of Masachapa, Nicaragua/ 00:38:49 UTC/27.2 km depth/ USGS
● M 5.3 - 1 km E of Santo Domingo, Panama/

The earthquakes in Nicaragua (M4.7) and Panama (M5.3) are a response to the movement of energy northward after the M7.2 earthquake in Peru.

chrome_screenshot_8 jul. 2024 5_04_23 p. m. CST.png
The earthquake [M7.2] occurred within the South American Plate and it is possible that energy may move northward into the Cocos and Caribbean Plate regions, so a response may occur in the southeastern region of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean

In the past 24 hours, there were 822 quakes of magnitudes up to 5.4:
  • 4 quakes above magnitude 5
  • 33 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
  • 110 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4
  • 201 quakes between magnitude 2 and 3
  • 474 quakes below magnitude 2 that people normally don't feel.

Write-up in the blaze about the earth's core slowing.

By analyzing seismographic data, scientists believe the core rotates quicker and slower during a 70-year cycle. A hypothesis proposed in 2023 claimed that the inner care had actually spun faster than Earth itself in the past, but was spinning slower in recent times. The slowdown was so significant that the inner core could even reverse the direction of its spin.

The research discovered the inner core began slowing down around 2008 and slightly reversed direction relative to the mantle by 2023. According to calculations by researchers, the rotation of the inner core will start speeding up again in the next 5 to 10 years.

The main study referenced is in Nature

They refer repeatedly to earthquake data as a means to assess the core's relative spin (faster or slower), because the types of waves produced by quakes penetrate into the core, and similar waveforms can be correlated with changes in spin.

Here's the abstract:

The solid inner core, suspended within the liquid outer core and anchored by gravity, has been inferred to rotate relative to the surface of Earth or change over years to decades based on changes in seismograms from repeating earthquakes and explosions1,2. It has a rich inner structure3,4,5,6 and influences the pattern of outer core convection and therefore Earth’s magnetic field.

Here we compile 143 distinct pairs of repeating earthquakes, many within 16 multiplets, built from 121 earthquakes between 1991 and 2023 in the South Sandwich Islands. We analyse their inner-core-penetrating PKIKP waves recorded on the medium-aperture arrays in northern North America. We document that many multiplets exhibit waveforms that change and then revert at later times to match earlier events.

The matching waveforms reveal times at which the inner core re-occupies the same position, relative to the mantle, as it did at some time in the past. The pattern of matches, together with previous studies, demonstrates that the inner core gradually super-rotated from 2003 to 2008, and then from 2008 to 2023 sub-rotated two to three times more slowly back through the same path.

These matches enable precise and unambiguous tracking of inner core progression and regression.
The resolved different rates of forward and backward motion suggest that new models will be necessary for the dynamics between the inner core, outer core and mantle.

There are several references to the earth's core in the sessions over the years. Basically, changes in the spin of the core are due to "grounding of the current" by the 'twin sun', and that such changes cause "opening up" quakes etc.

A low within the current global seismic activity 🤔

Prior to this M6.7 earthquake, levels remained low with only three low magnitude 5 earthquakes. One of them was on the southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge with magnitude 5.1

If there is no response in the South Sandwich Islands the energy could be released in Chile and eastward in the New Zealand region.

It appears that the energy of the latest lunar and planetary geometries was concentrated until an increase in the strength of the interplanetary magnetic field occurred which registered 10.64 nT on July 8. As has been observed, a significant earthquake commonly occurs two to three days after the strong IMF impact.

2024-06-30-overview.png

Is it possible that these impacts of the IMF will have major consequences on the planet due to the weakening of the Earth's magnetic field on the one hand and the slowing down of the Earth's core on the other?

🤔

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JULY 10_2024

High levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours.

● M 6.7 - south of Africa/ 04:55:43 UTC/ 10.0 km depth/ USGS
● M 5.4 - 220 km SW of Bengkulu, Indonesia/ 15:32:42 UTC/ 10.0 km depth/ USGS

● M 5.2 - 214 km SW of Bengkulu, Indonesia/ 21:00:55 UTC/10.0 km depth/ BMKG
● M 5.0 - South Sandwich Islands region/ 23:52:00 UTC/10.0 km depth/ USGS

A very strong magnitude 6.7 earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean south of Africa. The majority of reports came from Johannesburg a city of 2 million people in 3,024 km distance north of the epicenter. No aftershocks have been recorded so far but as expected, the energy (or seismic wave) reached the South Sandwich Islands where an M5.0 earthquake was recorded. This earthquake would take pressure off the Chilean region, in fact Argentina has had light seismic activity up to M4.5 and Colombia with M4.7.

In the past 24 hours, there were 809 quakes of magnitudes up to 6.7:
  • 1 quake above magnitude 6
  • 4 quakes between magnitude 5 and 6
  • 38 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
  • 91 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4
  • 196 quakes between magnitude 2 and 3
  • 479 quakes below magnitude 2 that people normally don't feel.
● Earthquake forecast updated July 10, 2024, 09:19 UTC
SSGEOS : A stronger tremor may occur potentially reaching magnitude 6. There is a slight possibility (30-40%) of a large seismic event.

As we have seen in other occasions, the presence of Venus or Mercury in a planetary geometry influences the occurrence of significant M6+ earthquakes.

A deep 7.1 earthquake has occurred in the west Pacific, the one in the Philippines Puma has posted. From there expect to see significant quakes, 6.0, spreading along the tectonic plates in the next week. The quake in Canada is probably from this spread and will descend down the coast.

No Tsunami warning for Vancouver Island at this time.

I think it’s important to stay grounded about this stuff. It’s easy to get over amped. There are so many factors and ways to look at it. The depth, type and location of a quake probably matters more than an absolute number. (Until you get to 8 and above)

Another way to look at it is that pressure is being released which may not mean “Look out, here comes the big one!” There is a constant drip feed of adrenalized flight-or-fight aspect to the earthquakes and volcanoes stories. I don’t mean to downplay it or discount the possibilities but they’ve always been there. The kettle is continuously on the stove. It has ever been thus.

I’m from California and lived on a volcano for 10 years and now I’m in Cascadia. I wonder sometimes if we are constantly adrenalized, will we have enough juice when we really need it? I’ve walked along the San Andreas, walked on a warm crinkling lava flow (thank you, Pele) and was awakened one morning by a “7” that was less than 100 miles away while living in a house on stilts made out of toothpicks. Take a deep breath and exhale. If it all blows up, it blows up. I’ll deal with it then. And, LOL, the day it actually happens will be the day the news reports won’t matter (if you’re anywhere near the action).

A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Celebes Sea 106 from Soccsksargen, Philippines. The earthquake had a great depth of 620 km (385 miles) and was felt over a large region. In fact, the USGS estimates that the earthquake was felt by 8.7 million people across the Philippines, however, a green alert was issued for deaths and economic losses related to the earthquake. No aftershocks have been recorded so far.

This impact will undoubtedly have its responses towards the Hindukush, Japan in the north, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea region, Fiji, Tonga, Kermadec Islands and New Zealand and to a lesser degree towards Central America, Ecuador and Peru.

Two earthquakes shook the central-southern region of Peru. A strong 5.7 magnitude earthquake occurred 54 km from Minas de Marcona. Some researchers believe that this quake was probably an aftershock of the 7.2 earthquake in the South Pacific Ocean, 91 km southeast of San Juan de Marcona that occurred last June 28

Another M5.6 earthquake occurred 57 km east of Tarata (Peru), very close to the border with Bolivia. According to USGS estimates, this earthquake could have been felt by more than 4.2 million people in 3 countries: Bolivia (2.9 million), Peru (1.1 million) and Chile (230,000) No aftershocks have been recorded so far.

In both cases, no special alert was issued.
