Magnitude-4.9 Barstow earthquake and aftershocks shake parts of Southern California
A magnitude-4.9 earthquake and at least two aftershocks were reported Monday afternoon in the Barstow area northeast of Los Angeles.
Aftershocks of magnitude-3.5 and 2.8 followed the quake in the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County. According to the USGS web site, shaking was felt in Los Angeles, Pasadena, Glendale, Chatsworth, Granada Hills, Chino, Universal City, Claremont and other locations.
The earthquake fault nearest the epicenter is the
Calico Fault, which crosses the desert.
There were no immediate reports of damage.

Magnitude 4.5 earthquake shakes southern Utah
According to University of Utah Seismograph Stations, the earthquake occurred at 11:29 p.m. The shock’s epicenter was located 15.3 miles south of Brian Head, or about 19 miles southeast of Cedar City.
Almost 2,000 people had reported feeling the quake, stretching along the I-15 corridor from near Beaver to north of Las Vegas, Nevada.
“A magnitude 4.5 quake is likely not very destructive, but remember the protective action for earthquakes is Drop, Cover, and Hold on,” the Utah Division of Emergency Management posted on X.
Hundreds reported feeling a magnitude 4.5 earthquake that rattled parts of southern Utah late Sunday night.

A very strong magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurred in the South Pacific Ocean near the coast of Fiji. The earthquake was only reported by Indonesia's BMKG agency. No alert was issued for this earthquake. There are no reports of damage. No aftershocks have been recorded. The closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Suva, the capital of Fiji with 77,000 inhabitants, in 69 km distance northwest of the epicenter.
In the past 24 hours, there were 908 quakes of magnitudes up to 6.9:
●2 quakes above magnitude 6
●5 quakes between magnitude 5 and 6
●33 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
●110 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4
●213 quakes between magnitude 2 and 3
●545 quakes below magnitude 2 that people normally don't feel.
● Earthquake forecast updated 28 July 2024, 13:43 UTC
A convergence of planetary and lunar geometry on 29-30 July can result in a cluster of strong seismic activity, possibly reaching mid to high 6, maybe 7 magnitude. A second convergence on 2-3 August will likely result in a strong seismic response, potentially reaching mid 7 magnitude within 5 days of that geometry.
