USGS data suggests that this specific event is likely related to the "Fontana Trend," a line of seismicity known for producing seismic swarms, that is, series of small earthquakes that occur in a short period of time. It is located near the intersection of major faults such as the San Jacinto Fault and the San Andreas Fault.

According to USGS, unlike well-defined faults such as San Andreas, the fault (or faults) associated with the Fontana Trend is not visible on the surface due to the thick sediments of the San Bernardino Valley. This makes direct mapping difficult, but seismicity patterns suggest an active fault structure.

Fontana Trend is thought to have the potential to produce events greater than M6.0.

Russia earthquake has caused a 'parade of volcanic eruptions': Expert

The volcano has caused part of the Kamchatka Peninsula to shift southeastward

The massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula last week has triggered the activity of seven volcanoes in the area, according to the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

The RAS said this is the first time in almost 300 years that seven volcanoes erupted at once in the region. The director of the institute, Alexey Ozerov, described the situation as an "extremely rare phenomenon that can be described as a parade of volcanic eruptions."

"We attribute the eruptions to the earthquake, which activated the magmatic foci and provided them with additional energy," Alexey Ozerov, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and director of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, told TASS, a state-affiliated media in Russia.

New strong aftershock M6.0

As of August 9, 2025, according to available data, more than 567 aftershocks of magnitude 4.0 or higher have been recorded following the magnitude 8.8 earthquake that occurred on July 29, 2025, off the Kamchatka Peninsula. Of these, at least 11 aftershocks have been of magnitude 6.0 or higher, including notable events such as a M6.9 earthquake on July 30, a M6.8 on August 3, and a M7.0 also on August 3

The earthquake was felt in several regions of Guatemala, including Guatemala City and other areas in the southwestern part of the country, such as the departments of Retalhuleu, Suchitepéquez, Escuintla, and San Marcos. It was also reported to have been felt in parts of southern Mexico, such as Chiapas, and in El Salvador, according to social media posts and official reports.
