Skopje Residents Frightened by New 3.1 Magnitude Earthquake

http://www.independent.mk/articles/37141/Skopje+Residents+Frightened+by+New+.+Magnitude+Earthquake

The earthquake that hit the capital around 1:00pm brought fear and anxiety to its residents. According to the Seismology Observatory of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, it was a 3.1 magnitude quake and it was felt at 12:52 pm in the Skopje region.

The epicenter of the earthquake was registered in the eastern part of the capital, while a IV-V intensity was felt in Skopje and its region. The depth of the epicenter was 1km, 6km east of Skopje.

The relatively small depth of the epicenter was the reason it was felt by a large number of citizens, especially those in the taller buildings.

The quake reminded the residents of the capital of the recent series of quakes that started after Skopje was jolted by a 5.3 magnitude quake.

There's been an uptick in earthquakes in the last day or so, like on the 7th there were 24 and today there's been 36. 1st October was the new moon and today is the 'First Quarter
Illumination: 53%'; geomagnetic activity is quiet.

Apparently there were three earthquakes off the Oregon coast on October 9th-the one above and then a magnitude 4.1 and 4.8:

With the recent geomagnetic storm, i wondered if there would be an up tick in quakes, either magnitude or variety, so far they're at average in quanitity, if a bit less, which in itself could be the quiet before the storm, but for now maybe location wise is interesting; from today we have shallow quakes in Turkey, M4.1, then Greece M4.5, then again in Turkey M5.3. And though they're not uncommon, there have been quakes in Iran, and today in Afghanistan. Also, another large quake in Papa New Guinea, after a recent M5.8. - though the area often has pretty strong quakes generally:

Noted in another thread the geomagnetic situation which was at storm levels yesterday and continuing to today, though the KP index has dropped.
GEOMAGNETIC STORM UNDERWAY: Auroras are dancing around the Arctic Circle on Oct. 14th as Earth slowly exits the magnetized wake of a CME that struck two days ago. Currently, geomagnetic storms are flickering between categories G1 and G2.

WHAT'S NEXT? On Oct. 15th, another disturbance is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. This time it's coming from a coronal hole--a gap in the sun's atmosphere from which solar wind flows:

ch_strip.png

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture on Oct. 13th. It shows the dark coronal hole pointing almost directly at Earth. At the leading edge of the emerging solar wind stream is a co-rotating interaction region (CIR)--that is, a transition zone between slow- and fast-moving solar wind. Shock waves and density gradients in CIRs often go a good job sparking auroras, so when it arrives on Oct. 15th polar auroras are likely

And probably not just auroras, but we'll wait and see.

Location map of the swarm/aftershocks is near the Greece and Albania Border (pictured); it's a full moon, geomagnetic levels are quiet, though ACE MAG. FIELD is showing as disturbed (pictured) - and as noted we've received a charge from the recent geomag storm and are directly facing the Suns coronal hole.

A new government report finds that the state of Washington would be ill-prepared in the event of a large earthquake, prompting officials to advise residents to stock up on food supplies for survival.

Report: Washington State Earthquake Prep ‘Grossly Inadequate’
https://sputniknews.com/us/201610241046683552-washington-state-unprepared-for-earthquake/

A draft of the report was written at the conclusion of a four-day exercise convened by government officials and emergency managers held in June called "Cascadia Rising." The meeting, which had an attendance of about 23,000 people, sought to hash out plans for feeding and sheltering masses of people in case of a "catastrophic disaster."

State officials said current response regulations are "grossly inadequate," and the assessment reports that Washington would be "at risk of a humanitarian disaster within 10 days" following an earthquake.

The report summarizes that law enforcement, first responders and emergency managers, "have not sufficiently planned and rehearsed for a catastrophic event where they themselves are in the impact zone."

Researchers have recently found that the Pacific Northwest is more vulnerable to large earthquakes than previously believed, with 8.0- to 9.0-magnitude quakes hitting Washington and Oregon nearly every 230 years. With the last earthquake of that size striking around 315 years ago, some scientists suggest that the region is overdue for another large-scale temblor.

The state’s Emergency Management Division is calling for annual allotment of $75,000 to encourage residents to have enough provisions to last them two weeks, or until emergency services can be rendered, according to the Seattle Times.

One official suggested that the Olympic Peninsula, an area that could be cut off from aid if bridges and roads are damaged, could need to sustain themselves for up to a month. Tara Lee, a spokeswoman for Governor Jay Inslee said, "We know this is an issue that will require strong coordination at every level of government."

Robert Ezelle, the director of Washington Emergency Management, said, "Everything we depend on to live our 21st-century lives is going to be significantly degraded or eradicated…The needs are going to be immediate, they are going to be urgent and they are going to be overwhelming."

The report concluded that "A massive response will be required. The scale of damage to critical infrastructure that would be caused by a full rip of the entire fault line would be massive and affect millions of people from the coast through the I-5 corridor to the Cascades from British Columbia to Northern California." Clallam County emergency coordinator Penny Linterman remarked, "What you have on hand when this occurs is how you're going to survive."
