There may be an uptick in quake activity due to a current geomagnetic storm - 40 quakes in 24 hours so far, the storm began first thing the day of the 25th UTC; overall there hasn't been anything too unusual, osit. Apparently the impact was 'more effective than expected' which would correspond to the idea that Earth is more sensitive to these due to it's weakening shield.

STRONG GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A strong "G3-class" geomagnetic storm is underway on Oct. 25th as Earth enters a fast-moving stream of solar wind. The arrival of the solar wind stream was predicted, but the intensity of the resulting storm is greater than forecast. Rome (CNN)A 5.5-magnitude earthquake Wednesday hit central Italy, about 50 miles north of the site of a deadly quake in August that killed nearly 300 people, the US Geological Survey said.
The epicenter was south-southwest of Visso and the initial depth is estimated at 10 kilometers (6 miles). The quake hit at 7 p.m. (1 p.m. ET) between Perugia and Macerata, according to ANSA.

Visso is about 110 miles northeast of Rome and 50 miles north of Amatrice, the small town that lost about 270 residents when a 6.2-magnitude quake hit August 24. Another 20 people were killed in nearby towns.

There have been no reports yet of damage or injuries.
"We don't have any reported victims, but we're in the dark and under a downpour," said Mauro Falcucci, the mayor of the small town of Castelsantangelo sul Nera, according to state news agency ANSA.
"We're waiting for the Civil Protection Department to bring us lighting towers."

Damage Reported After Quakes Strike Italy

Meteorologist Kait Parker reports on a second earthquake in Italy. People as far as Rome have felt small tremors. Minor damage now being observed.

Two powerful earthquakes occurred in central Italy on Wednesday night, with the second being stronger than the first.

The foreshock was rated 5.5 magnitude by the USGS, while the main quake was rated 6.1.

A pair of large earthquakes struck central Italy Wednesday night, with the second being larger than the first.

Both temblors were centered near the town of Visso, Italy, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The second quake was given a preliminary 6.1 rating after it struck at 9:18 p.m. local time (3:18 p.m. EDT) at a depth of 6.2 miles, USGS data revealed.

"It was a very strong earthquake, apocalyptic," Ussita Mayor Marco Rinaldi told the ANSA news agency, as reported by the Associated Press, following the main quake. "People are screaming on the street and now we are without lights."

Two hours and eight minutes earlier, the same area was shaken by a 5.5 magnitude earthquake that was felt as far away as Rome. It, too, was measured at a depth of 6.2 miles.

The first earthquake was responsible for some structural damage and at least two injuries. There was no immediate word on additional damage or casualties from the second tremor.

"We're without power, waiting for emergency crews," said the mayor of Castelsantangelo sul Nera in an interview with Sky TG24 following the first earthquake. "We can't see anything. It's tough. Really tough."

The mayor also said some buildings collapsed, but he hadn't heard of injuries in his town. Darkness and rainfall were hindering the search for any residents that were possibly trapped.

After a quake-induced landslide, a major state highway known as the Salaria was closed near Arquata del Tronto for precautionary reasons, the AP also said.

The earthquakes occurred not far from the epicenter of a 6.2 magnitude temblor that killed more than 200 people on Aug. 24. That tremor left widespread damage, toppling centuries-old buildings in a matter of seconds, which brought back awful memories Wednesday as the ground began shaking again.

"There's a lot of fear, but it would seem, fortunately, from the first reports no problems for people," said Pietro Luigi Altavilla, deputy mayor of Norcia, according to the AP.

Several thousands of people were left without a roof over head after a series of earthquakes in the Marche region in central Italy, head of the Marche Civil Protection Department Cesare Spuri said on Thursday.

"We’ve got 2,000-3,000 displaced people, and I fear many homes registered after the earthquake of August 24 are uninhabitable now," Spuri told journalists. According to Spuri, the authorities should urgently make a decision on the fate of people who lost their houses as temporarily accommodating them in tent camps is impossible because of the coming winter.

The first earthquake with magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale and epicenter in the province of Macerata (Marche region) shook central Italy on Wednesday at around 7 p.m. local time. Two hours later a more intense and lasting tremor hit, registering magnitude 5.9. The final quake was recorded at 11:42 p.m. with magnitude 4.6. According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, two more earthquakes with magnitude 4.1 and 4.4 were recorded on Thursday at about 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.

The Italian government allotted 40 million euros (approximately $43 million dollars) to deal with the emergency issues in the aftermath of the earthquakes that wreaked havoc in Italy the day before, media reported Thursday.

The Council of Ministers has agreed to extend the state of emergency amid the new earthquake and to allocate 40 million euros to cover all the immediate expenses caused by the quakes in Umbria and Marche, the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero wrote.

The hardest hit cities and towns include Visso, Ussita, Castelsantangelo sul Nera, Muccia, Pieve Torina, San Gines, Camerino and Caldarola, where hundreds of houses were destroyed, dozens of people hospitalized for shock or injuries.

Currently there is no data on seriously injured or killed people, apart from a 73-year-old man who died from a heart attack after the first quake struck.

Earlier this year, on August 24, a 6.0-magnitude quake shook central Italy, causing damage across the regions of Umbria, Lazio and Marche and resulting in the deaths of over 290 people. The earthquake was followed by multiple aftershocks.

The shake hit hard but no casualties due to the first shock that moved people out of their homes, even if... the major disruption came with a number of external facades by a bunch of buildings that collapsed externally. So in a way it was safer at home than outside at least for the many towns hit far away from the epicenter!

People are very frightened, lots of them sleep on their cars or caravans, many just flee away during that very night. My thought goes to all of those who have their home destroyed or on hold due to cracks and security checks.

I was actually thinking about you when the first earthquake hit back in August as I thought you lived somewhere in the region.

This time around, people were considerably luckier since the tremors happened in the evening when everybody was still awake. It must still be very disconcerting for those in the area to live in constant fear of another earthquake happening at some point in the future as it's a highly seismic area. :(

Just saw this on the news. The earthquake hit at a depth of 10km and is thought to be coming from the same fault that hit Amatrice back in August. They reported some of the old churches and walls crumbling after the tremors. For now no casualties have been reported but it's still early to say. My thoughts go out to all the members living in the area and their families. Hope you are ok dantem!
