Earthquakes around the world

Split and surrounding area were jolted today by short but sharp one, luckily did not last more than few seconds. i was on Riva promenade at that time, so no real danger for me. One acquaintance of mine escaped some tiles (or whatever) falling down in the old city... Lot of people got outside out of fear, so streets were pretty crowded - all the sudden many stopped being TV, smartphone or PC potatoes... Almost like they experienced some kind of life pulse - start gathering and commenting about this violent tremor - shaker from dumbing everyday routine... interesting how little suffering can make people come together - and how would that play in the case of some greater calamity of any kind...

A shallow earthquake registered by the EMSC as M4.8 hit near Split, Croatia at 12:57 UTC (13:57 CET) on December 9, 2016. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). GFZ Croatia is reporting M4.6 at the same depth (intensity VI - Strong).

...

Witnesses said they heard loud deep explosion and rumble, followed by strong shaking up and down. Many said they have never experienced an earthquake this strong in the region.

What's interesting is this uptick is probably related to the following coronal hole, which previously has been associated with some serious shaking:

This is a "coronal hole"--a region in the sun's atmosphere where the magnetic field opens up and allows solar wind to escape. We've actually seen this coronal hole before--at least twice. It is rotating around with the sun, strobing Earth like a lighthouse every ~27 days. The last two times we experienced its solar wind (Oct. 25-28 and Nov. 23-26), G1- and G2-class magnetic storms sparked bright polar auroras. A repeat performance is likely in the week ahead.

ARCTIC AURORA WATCH: Around the Arctic Circle, localized geomagnetic storming is possible on Dec. 17th and 18th as Earth passes through a minor stream of solar wind. This event will probably not register on NOAA storm scales because those scales measure global, not local activity. Locally, however, there could be some auroras around the poles even as the planetary K-index remains low. Free: Space Weather Alerts

A BIG CORONAL HOLE TURNS TOWARD EARTH: For the third month in a row, a large hole in the sun's atmosphere is turning toward Earth. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory photographed the yawning structure on Dec. 16th:

So that makes it 7 earthquakes of magnitude 6.9 and greater since the 13th of November or in 6 weeks. Is this a new normal that is setting in?

The new earthquake in Chile marks a precedent as to the frequency of these, since although Chile is a seismic country, never in the history of the country had earthquakes of these dimensions (around 8 degrees) as often as now, every year!. Before, these happened every 25 years.

There is definitely an increase in seismic activity. A typical daily activity being about 30-40 quakes with a maximum of about M5.0 - M5.5.

This being said a M7.0 releases 100 times less energy than a M9.0 so the current activity is high but not exceptional (yet).

A series of earthquakes was reported early Wednesday morning near the Nevada-California state line, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-earthquakesa-earthquake-57-quake-strikes-near-hawthorne-nev-hgpm-story.html

The first temblor, with a magnitude of 5.7, occurred at 12:22 a.m. PST near Hawthorne, Nev. At least seven quakes with magnitudes between 3 and 5.6 were reported shortly after.

Light shaking was felt as far away as South Lake Tahoe, Fresno, Visalia and Merced.

Hours later, temblors continued near Hawthorne, with four quakes between magnitude 2.8 and 4 occurring after 4 a.m.

The California Office of Emergency Services said it was assessing the situation, but there were no reports of serious injuries or damage.

According to the USGS, the 5.7 quake’s epicenter was 56 miles from Gardnerville Ranchos, Nev., 69 miles from South Lake Tahoe, Calif., 70 miles from Carson City, Nev., and 84 miles from Fernley, Nev.

In the last 10 days, there have been eight earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
