Earthquakes around the world

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JUNE 28_2024

Very high levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. A powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred in the South Pacific Ocean near the coast of Peru. Minas Marcona, a town with 15,000 inhabitants located 98 km away from the epicenter, may have felt the movement with greater intensity. So far no major damage or casualties have been reported.

Seven aftershocks have been detected so far. The strongest was a magnitude 4.7. An aftershock in the region of Peru with a magnitude of 5.0 to 6.9 in the next hours/days cannot be ruled out.

The earthquake occurred within the South American Plate and it is possible that energy may move northward into the Cocos and Caribbean Plate regions, so a response may occur in the southeastern region of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean (including Colombia y Venezuela) with a M6.5+ in the worst case. While for the Chilean region an impact of M6.5+ could be expected as well.

A minor energy component will move towards Southeast Asia possibly causing magnitude 5+ all depending on the planetary and crustal conditions as well.

On June 28 planetary geometry Mercury, Sun, Saturn happened at 23:11 UTC (a few minutes ago) Around 14:00 UTC the interplanetary magnetic field exceeded 20nT. So we have ingredients for a possible significant seismic event in the next few hours/days.
The Bt component of the interplanetary magnetic field exceeded 20nT around 14:00 UTC and during the severe geomagnetic storm the Bt component registered 18.35nT. Let's see what effects the strength of the solar magnetic field has on the weather and geophysical events in the coming days.

M7 earthquake in Peru leaves several injured and material damage

The earthquake caused eight injuries, five of them in the city of Ica and in the town of Acari, reported the Peruvian Ministry of Health in its X account.

Five of the injured were treated in hospitals in the first city, and the rest received "ambulatory care" in the health center of Acari, the agency detailed.

The Navy's Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation issued a tsunami warning, which was lifted.

The tremor was felt in Lima and a large part of the southern and central coast of the country.

In the early hours of Friday morning
The Geophysical Institute of Peru reported an earthquake of M7.2

The seismic event had its epicenter in the province of Caravelí in the department of Arequipa and was registered at 00:36 a.m. (local time).

One of the strongest of the last years, the images are impressive.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JUNE 29_2024

As already mentioned a very strong magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred in the South Pacific Ocean near the coast of Peru. This quake was likely an aftershock of the 7.2 quake 8 km west of Atiquipa on Jun 28.

According to reports on social networks, the districts of Yauca and Chala are the most affected by the earth movements that have forced residents to sleep outside their homes for fear of new earthquakes. After the M6.1 quake, the number of injured people increased to 14, in addition to causing further damage to homes, schools, churches and health centers. There were also power outages and landslides and rockslides.

Hernando Tavera, executive president of the Geophysical Institute of Peru, said that the M7.2 earthquake released an energy equivalent to 250,000 tons of dynamite, comparable to the explosion of 15.6 atomic bombs, so it is not surprising that more aftershocks will occur.

These were the most significant earthquakes

Chile: Magnitude-5.2 earthquake occurs south-southeast of Antofagasta, Antofagasta Region, at around 00:21 June 29

Magnitude-5.2 earthquake occurred in the Antofagasta Region at around 00:21 June 29. The epicenter was about 44 km (27 miles) south-southeast of Antofagasta city. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 44 km (27 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout the region. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JULY 01_2024

Low levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. The most significant earthquakes occurred in the western Pacific Ocean. An M5.3 earthquake occurred in the Bonin Islands at a considerable depth of 472 km. Deep earthquakes occur in subduction zones, where one of the tectonic plates dives under another and is “subducted” into the mantle.

Since these earthquakes occurred in the same region, in North and Southeast Asia and south of New Zealand, this group can be considered as a cluster. It is possible that we could see a significant earthquake possibly magnitude M5 alto y en el peor de los casos M6.0 in the next few days for this same region.

A geological fault appeared near Tula in the state of Tamaulipas, it is estimated that this fault is more than six kilometers long. The width of the crack varies, but there are stretches where it is from one to three meters and a depth of one to four meters.

This phenomenon, which arose after the torrential rains that tropical storm Alberto left in the state, has generated concern among the inhabitants, due to the damage it could cause to infrastructure, crops and homes.

One inhabitant mentioned that it was at night when they heard a great thunder, a great roar, like when it rains and lightning strikes. He mentions that in one area of his land the crack is 15 meters deep.

What appears to be the continuation of the crack reaches some houses which show structural damage.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JULY 02_2024

For the third consecutive day low levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. It is worth mentioning that two light earthquakes magnitude 4.8 occurred in Greece south of Moires. 5 earthquakes reported off Vancouver Island: USGS

The United States Geological Survey is reporting five earthquakes, in quick succession, off Vancouver Island Wednesday (July 3).

The first was a 4.4-magnitude earthquake at 12:59 p.m., about 214 kilometres southwest of Tofino.

The second, a 4.7 magnitude, was at 1:18 p.m. and further west off the Island. The next one was three minutes later at a 4.5-magnitude and 218 kilometres southwest of Tofino.

A fourth, at 1:23 p.m., was 208 kilometres southwest of Tofino and a 4.3-magnitude.

The fifth, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake, was 216 kilometres southwest of Tofino and 2:14 p.m.

The U.S. Geological Survey says all five earthquakes were at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Earthquakes Canada, however, is only reporting the two earthquakes: The first at 12:59 p.m. as a 3.9-magnitude earthquake and another, a 4.1-magnitude earthquake, at 1:12 p.m. It says the first earthquake wasn't felt.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JULY 04_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity were recorded in the last 24 hours. A strong earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred in the North Pacific Ocean, 176 km off Canada. Three hours before this earthquake a precursor of M4.6 occurred and so far 3 aftershocks have been detected: M4 3, M4.3 and M4.4. The strongest-ever (since 1900) recorded quake in this area measured magnitude 7.5. It occurred 78 years ago.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JULY 05_2024

Low levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. Seismic disturbances continue in the Pacific Northwest near Vancouver Island. A preliminary M5.3 earthquake was reported by the Department of Natural Resources Canada (NARCAN) later updated to M5.0 by USGS.

The closest larger town where the quake was felt is Tofino, a town with 1,900 inhabitants in Canada, in 233 km distance east of the epicenter.

The following comment from SSGEOS is interesting:
#Earthquake swarm since 3 July near #Vancouver Island thus far peaked M 5.7. This is close to the #Cascadia subduction zone that last produced a M 9 earthquake in 1700. Average occurrence of M 8.5+ is 240 years.

(Pierre) [returns after checking dates] The session about the spike and the 10.4 earthquake was on July 4th, 1998. Diana was dead on the 31st of August 1997.

(L) So in other words, the 10.4 earthquake and tsunami in the Pacific Northwest may be on the agenda still because it was part of the new timeline that was related to the murder of Princess Diana?

A: Pretty much!

Q: (Joe) But it might not be 10.4.

(L) It could be worse!

A: Yes

What's worse than an M10.4 earthquake? I can't imagine it.

Earth, Moon, Sun lunar geometry occurred at 22:23 UTC on July 5 BUT the geomagnetic field has been quiet to unstable during the last 72 hours. The IMF maintained a Bt value of no more than 6nT and it was not until July 4th that it reached 10nT. The solar wind speed has been around 400 km/s. It is possible that these factors are contributing to low levels of seismic activity.
