In the past 24 hours activity increased again with a strong M5.9 earthquake in Japan and a seismic cluster.​

The earthquake M5.9 occurred in the Philippine Sea. A seismic station in Taiwan recorded the following seismogram indicating that the earthquake had a duration of at least 10 seconds of strong motion.

For this earthquake, 2 aftershocks have been detected so far. The strongest was a magnitude 4.1 quake. According to Volcanodiscovery this earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of Japan in over 15 years. This region has the potential to generate M8+ earthquakes, the last one of M8.0 occurred 109 years ago.
