The earthquake M5.9 occurred in the Philippine Sea. A seismic station in Taiwan recorded the following seismogram indicating that the earthquake had a duration of at least 10 seconds of strong motion.

According to Volcanodiscovery this earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of Japan in over 15 years.
