WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 02, 2026
● Mexico City: Fallen poles, trees, temporary power outages (mostly restored), minor damage to buildings (ceiling tiles, broken windows). Reports of explosion/fire at an electrical substation due to transformer failure. Helicopter flyovers did not detect any serious damage.
Today, a series of earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or higher has been reported, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 5.5.
●M 5.5 - 58 km NE of Sainte-Marie, Martinique
After the earthquake M6.5 in Guerrero México, authorities confirmed two deaths:
● A woman (aged around 50-56) in Guerrero, due to the collapse of her home in a community near the epicenter.
● A man (aged 60-67) in Mexico City, who fell down the stairs during the evacuation when the seismic alert was activated (possibly due to a heart attack or trauma)
Minor injuries were reported: at least 12 people in Mexico City due to nervous breakdowns or falls during evacuations, and a few more in Guerrero. There are no reports of additional serious casualties.
The damage was mainly minor and localized, with no serious structural damage to critical infrastructure:
● Guerrero (epicenter): Damage in at least 16 municipalities, including Acapulco, Chilpancingo, and San Marcos. Road collapses and landslides (e.g., on the Autopista del Sol highway), gas leaks, damage to homes (around 500 houses with detached roof tiles, fences, walls, or partial collapses), public buildings, and hospitals (damage to ceilings and finishes). A hospital in Chilpancingo suffered major structural damage, requiring the evacuation of patients. A restaurant in Barra Vieja, Acapulco, also collapsed.
