This activity occurred in a "seismic gap" between recent large earthquakes to the North (Kamchatka M 8.8, July 2025) and the South (Japan M 7.6, December 2025). This is a subduction zone where great earthquakes last occurred 2006-2007 (~M8.3) Frank Hoogerbeets

The typical seismic cluster has also occurred.
Frank Hoogerbeets mentions:
We can have seismic activity well into the 6th magnitude, maybe even approaching magnitude 7 as a result of this geometry. And that could be later today, tomorrow, I would say around the 11th give or take one day.
The next peak will occur on January 14th with Venus, Mars, Mercury and Jupiter involved and also a planetary conjunction involving Mercury, Earth & Jupiter, while the Moon was also in a conjunction with Uranus late on the 13th. By this date, the quintuple conjunction will be dissipating, so we could expect a seismic cluster typical of magnitude 5+ earthquakes.
