Device Near Train Station Explodes While FBI Investigates

Elizabeth, N.J. (AP) -- A suspicious device found in a trash can near a New Jersey train station exploded early Monday as a bomb squad was attempting to disarm it with a robot, officials said.

Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage said that the FBI was working to disarm one of five devices found in the same bag, which was discovered in a trash can by two men around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, near the Elizabeth train station on New Jersey Transit's Northeast Corridor rail line. The men had reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of the package, Bollwage said.

There was no immediate report of injuries or damage. A message left with the FBI wasn't immediately returned. The mayor warned that other explosions were expected.

NJ Transit service was suspended early Monday between Newark Liberty Airport and Elizabeth, and New Jersey-bound Amtrak trains were being held at New York Penn Station, officials said, while New York-bound Amtrak trains were being held in Trenton.

Train passengers reported being stuck on Amtrak and NJ Transit trains for hours Sunday night, while some trains moved in reverse to let passengers off at other stations. Amtrak said 2,400 passengers were affected and that trains were being brought into other stations for people to get other transportation. It wasn't clear when the Elizabeth station would be open, a threat to cause major issues on the Monday morning commute into New York.

The discovery of the suspicious package comes a day after an explosion in Manhattan injured 29 people, and an unexploded pressure-cooker device was found four blocks away. Also Saturday, a pipe bomb exploded about an hour from the Elizabeth train station in Seaside Park, New Jersey, forcing the cancellation of a military charity 5K run. Officials said it didn't appear that those two incidents were connected, though they weren't ruling anything out.

Investigators didn't immediately comment on whether they thought the Elizabeth incident was connected to either of the two blasts.

Bollwage said that he wasn't willing to say that Elizabeth had become a target, and that it was possible that someone worried about the authorities was trying to get rid of the package.

"I'm extremely concerned for the residents of the community, but more importantly extremely concerned for everyone in the state and country where someone can just go and drop a backpack into a garbage can that has multiple explosives in it with no timers and then you have to wonder how many people could have been hurt," Bollwage said.

This story has been corrected to show that the bag was found around 8:30 p.m., not 9:30 p.m.

Right in my hometown city. It's very strange when this stuff reaches so close to home. I'm at this train station literally every week, coming and going from Puck's place in Manhattan. I was in Manhattan when the Chelsea explosion happened and I was still here when all this unfolded last night in Elizabeth. I'm supposed to head home today, but there will definitely be train delays.

Now today they released a photo of the suspect, and - surprise! - it's an Arab man... and apparently his last known address was in Elizabeth, NJ. I'm not buying it, though. If these were acts of terrorism meant to kill people then this guy did a really terrible job at it. It seems more like events designed to scare people by other forces at play, to heighten the tension, to heighten Islamophobia, to keep everyone paranoid. I'm bracing myself for when I return home today and hear everyone on the street talking about the 'evil Muslims'...

State Police are inside West Point conducting a search of the massive complex.

Police in New York City released the name and photo of the man they are looking for as a possible suspect. He is Ahmad Khan Rahami, 27, a US citizen born in Afghanistan.

In the Chelsea explosion on Saturday, over two dozen people were wounded.

Also on Saturday, a bomb exploded before a charity 5K race in Seaside Park, New Jersey. No one was injured and authorities are working to determine if the incidents in both locations were connected.

Secret Service, Metro Transit, U.S. Park and D.C. Police were all on the scene near 17th Street and East Street NW after getting reports of the suspicious package some time around midnight.

The investigation centered around a back pack found in the area.

Transit Police were seen questioning two people near the scene.

This report comes on the heals of the attack in New York and the bomb incidents in Seaside Park and Elizabeth, New Jersey over the weekend.

The US Capitol and nearby office buildings were placed on lockdown for roughly 30 minutes in response to reports about gunmen in the area. The lockdown has since been lifted.

Metropolitan Police have confirmed that they received a call about a man with a gun on 1st & C St. NW, near the Department of Labor. Capitol Police tell Sputnik that three suspects were taken into custody and police confirm that a machine gun was found on the scene. One officer claims gunshots were fired as suspects attempted to escape police custody.

Lawmakers were barricaded inside and told to lock all doors, though they were told by police that they could take the complex's underground tunnels back to their offices. People inside were warned to stay away from exterior windows and doors.

A similar incident occurred last Friday, when the US Capitol Building and visitor center were placed on lockdown after a woman was spotted with what appeared to be a firearm.

Multiple arrivals from Boston, Miami and Richmond have already been delayed as trains all over the Northeast Corridor were experiencing issues, with service completely suspended in areas after authorities found multiple bombs near a train station in New Jersey.

There is an increased police presence at Union Station Monday morning, including K9 Units that are sweeping the area.

Amtrak is working to put together a modified schedule for the rest of the day.

Have to think this is all part of the orchestrated chaos not only to distract from US attacking Syria for ISIS, but part of the machinations for the upcoming election along w/ the overall takedown of the US. And isn't this just more juice to up the police state - more controls on our ability to travel by train, plane, or automobile? As he has done several times in recent months, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump cited Israel as his example for the success of “profiling” in the prevention of terror attacks.

In a phone interview Monday on “Fox and Friends,” Trump said he would “knock the hell out of” terrorist groups.

Trump said that police “are afraid to do anything” to stop attacks like the bombing in New York.

“You know, our police are amazing,” he told Fox News. “Our local police, they know who a lot of these people are. They’re afraid to do anything about it because they don’t want to be accused of profiling.”

More than 800 immigrants mistakenly granted citizenship

The U.S. government has mistakenly granted citizenship to at least 858 immigrants from countries of concern to national security or with high rates of immigration fraud who had pending deportation orders, according to an internal Homeland Security audit released Monday.

The Homeland Security Department's inspector general found that the immigrants used different names or birthdates to apply for citizenship with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and such discrepancies weren't caught because their fingerprints were missing from government databases.

Roth's report said fingerprints are missing from federal databases for as many as 315,000 immigrants with final deportation orders or who are fugitive criminals. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has not reviewed about 148,000 of those immigrants' files to add fingerprints to the digital record.

The gap was created because older, paper records were never added to fingerprint databases created by both the now-defunct Immigration and Naturalization Service and the FBI in the 1990s. ICE, the DHS agency responsible for finding and deporting immigrants living in the country illegally, didn't consistently add digital fingerprint records of immigrants whom agents encountered until 2010.

Homeland Security doing another 'bang up' job!

Imagine you are a visitor from Mars, watching all this from a very great height. Surely two aspects of this are striking:

To begin with, we have the world’s sole superpower, which purports to be the defender of the “international order,” unable to ensure the security of its own citizens on its own soil. We send our fleet thousands of miles away, to the Persian Gulf and the South China Sea to “protect” the sea lanes – and yet we cannot protect Americans on the streets of New York City.

Secondly, the reactions to this amazing fact reveal a strange bifurcation: government officials and the national news media (or do I repeat myself?) are in denial, while ordinary Americans are on the cusp between anger and hysteria. The reaction of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was emblematic of the former: he said the explosion was “intentional” but not linked to terrorism.

This is the very definition of terrorism, but apparently the policy of denial is supposed to keep people calm. What’s more likely is that it does just the opposite. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, apparently concerned that this was a bit too much cognitive dissonance for the public, weighed in by saying it was “obviously” terrorism, but that there’s no evidence it was linked to international terrorism.

One has to be remarkably obtuse to ignore the pattern: three attacks on the same day, one of which a terrorist group has claimed “credit” for, two of which are similar in their modes of operation – a bomb in a dumpster on a public thoroughfare. Authorities are now confirming that the Chelsea and Seaside explosive devices were put together by the same person. Put this in the context of continuing threats from Islamic terrorists that they will hit the homeland, and the only conclusion one can draw is that the events of September 17 were a coordinated attack – and the prime suspects aren’t Presbyterians.

It isn’t “Islamophobia” to acknowledge this – it’s realism. After all, the very “blowback” theory offered up by critics of US intervention in the Middle East has to lead us to this conclusion: it makes perfect sense that, having spent the greater part of the past twenty years leveling much of the Muslim world to the ground, some of the inhabitants would be coming after us.

What’s more, it’s an indisputable fact that the US government is now at war with one billion Muslims – at least, that’s how they perceive it. The origins of this war can be traced back to US foreign policy, yes, but that’s not the whole story. It’s gone way beyond that. Given the history of the post-9/11 era – the invasions of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and now Syria – a significant portion of the Muslim world has integrated this conflict into their religion. “Jihad” is a religious duty in mainstream Islam, and Muslims – unlike most Westerners – take their faith seriously.

So what’s the solution? Simply put, there is none. We cannot undo the history of the last fifteen years: the winds of blowback are unstoppable. The US government cannot possibly protect its citizens from random attacks on soft targets, such as the Chelsea district of New York City on a Saturday night, or a mall in Minnesota. Our vaunted system of universal surveillance hasn’t worked in the case of San Bernardino, Orlando, the Boston bombing, the Ft. Hood massacre – and it didn’t work on September 17.

We can no more stop the terrorist assault on the homeland than a child who puts his finger in an electric outlet can avoid a shock. This is the New Normal – and the consequences for our republic, our politics, and our everyday lives can only be painted in the darkest hues. This is why the first response of our elected “leaders” is kneejerk denial: an honest confession of their powerlessness would only inspire panic – and retribution.

What’s worse is that our own government has enabled the very enemies who plot our destruction. The US has openly allied with Islamist radicals in order to bring about regime change in Syria: the results of that policy are underscored by the recent incident in which US Special Forces were forced to flee from a village in the northern part of the country when the “moderate” Islamists we’ve been funding and arming threatened to slaughter them on the spot. The same thing happened in Libya, where we “liberated” the country from Ghaddafi and the very rebels we empowered with air strikes and aid murdered our Ambassador and three others at Benghazi. To go farther back in time, our aid to the Afghan mujahideen who were fighting the Soviets in the 1980s led to the consolidation of al-Qaeda and the rise of Osama bin Laden as the leader and symbol of a global terrorist insurgency.

To top it off, we still regard the Saudis as “allies” in spite of the fact that they had a hand in the 9/11 attacks. Washington is openly colluding with our enemies while the nation sleeps.

9 Weird Things About The NYC And NJ Bombs That Will Make You Say Hmmmm…

You know me – I’m not prone to conspiracy theories (cough). But, I noticed some weird things about the pressure cooker bomb attacks that took place in New York City and New Jersey this weekend and the subsequent arrest of the alleged perpetrator.

Some things just don’t add up. Trust me, you won’t even need to don your tinfoil because none of this is outrageous.

See what I mean? Weird stuff. Lots of weird stuff. I’m not saying it never happened or that this dude wasn’t a terrorist or that someone else was responsible or that this was a false flag. I’m saying that there are holes in the official story that one could drive an 18-wheeler truck through.

But the official story sure does seem a bit questionable.

Or maybe Rahami is just so bad at being a terrorist that the Islamic State doesn’t want to claim him as one of theirs.

Of course Islamic State can't claim him - he was already a FBI guy!

NY — Ahmed Khan Rahami, the suspect in several bomb attacks in New York and New Jersey, came on the FBI’s radar two years ago after his father notified the Bureau of concerns, according to a law enforcement source. The source was confirming statements made by Rahami’s father to reporters on Tuesday morning. The source says that Rahami’s father called the FBI some time after Rahami returned from nearly one year in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Law enforcement sources say that it was while on that trip that Rahami tried to get a visa for his wife — a Pakistani woman whom he had married in 2011. These sources say she was pregnant at the time and that he was told she could not enter the United States until after the baby was born, which is what happened. These sources say that his wife left the United States last week.

And it looks like there's an iron-clad case against him:
