Gluten traps

I used to buy burgers from the local butcher. I don't know, I may be paranoid, but last time we ate them it looked like they had some soy protein mixed with the meat, because the texture was different and tasted as "diluted" meat. We need to be extremely careful. No more pre-made hamburgers for me!

I used to feel bad to make them go in all this trouble, but it is about my health after all, and I put a lot of effort on detoxing from all my past toxic eating habits. Also, by speaking out, we are creating awareness about these allergies (which are very common).

I agree with what you are saying, Alana. You are right about working so hard on diet and I am just being silly to risk blowing it all, because I can't speak up. I don't tell waitstaff that I have allergies when I am eating out. I know this is wrong and if I end up with contaminated food, it's my own fault. I think it has to do with the fact that my brother has Celiac and I feel I am being dishonest leading someone to think I have a disease that I don't and causing them extra work. Also I am definitely a person who does not like to draw attention to oneself.

After reflecting a bit on my post and your reply, I did some research on the definitions of food allergies vs food intolerances. I think it is fair for me to say I am intolerant, because I certainly have digestive problems when I eat gluten and dairy. I was thinking I need to approach this with the mindset that a restaurant is a place of business and I am paying for whatever I ordered.

Thank you for helping me look deeper into my post. I guess this was a bigger lesson than I thought.

My friend was over the other night and mentioned that some chap sticks can contain gluten. I hadn't even thought about that :O and see no posts regarding this so I decided to comment. So far I've found some lists online of chap sticks that are apparently gluten-free:

On that line of thought, I use a cocoa butter stick for when my lips get too dry. It's just cocoa butter. Make sure it's not their lipbalm, as I think that has some extra stuff in it. The brand is cococare, here it is on amazon.

I would be very suspicious if I saw figs covered in white powder. I hope you feel better soon.

I also found out recently that most duck paté that are found in supermarkets or served in restaurants, have wheat flour in them too. So again, reading the labels and making clear to the waiters/people who sell these stuff, that we have a severe gluten allergy, is the way to go. When I say that, even if the person is not sure what are the exact ingredients of a food/product, they tell me to avoid it and give me a suggestion of something that they are sure does not contain gluten.

Soy Reaction from Applegate

Hi Everyone. I ate applegate farms packaged chicken all week--- several weeks ago, thinking I was eating a safe organic lunch. Well my daughter vomited by midweek and I had an awful gut wrenching reaction to it. I felt stress pangs in my hands, gut and this inner trembling. After ruling out everything else and normal bloodwork, I realized through process of elimination that there is SOY in their chicken products. Whether it is the oil or filler. I stopped eating it but by then i had an awful teeth chattering when i hold my teeth together and it won't go away. It's not stress. it directly came on when I was eating the applegate. I ate one patty and had teeth chattering so much 20 mins after I went to the ER. As I sat in the ER it faded but did not and has not faded.

Any ideas? I have had all tests done, went for several complete massages, reflexology, chiropractor, checked VIT D, calcium, checked bloodwork, electrolytes. Nothing came back wrong.

Any ideas on any links to soy. i ate tofu once last year and had a similar awful trembling so I never ate it again. This time, I didn't know the chicken had soy and dug into all week. (grilled chicken and the patties).

Any advice would be appreciated. :)

Did it say that there was soy in the product or are you only assuming? In Denmark they sometimes put some kind of maize starch into the chicken fillets so that the chicken will be more moist when frying it.

My advice would be to read the label and thereby discovering what it is you might react to.

Hi breathedeep,

Welcome to our forum. :)

We recommend all new members to post an introduction in the Newbies section telling us a bit about themselves, how they found the cass material, and how much of the work here they have read.

You can have a look through that board to see how others have done it.

Hi, breathedeep, and welcome to the forum. I agree that it's not clear from your post how you determined there was soy in the chicken. Is it from your reaction being the same or similar to other soy products, or is it confirmed? Definitely always read labels, although even that is not 100% foolproof.

I look forward to your intro in the Newbies section. :)

If you are looking for more information on soy, you can go to sott.net, type in the word soy in the search function and you will find plenty of articles on it.

Another thing to keep in mind is that many chickens that are commercially sold in supermarkets are fed on corn and soy grains, and, most probably, they are GMO products.

I agree, also, on reading the labels to see what you are eating. However, certain ingredients are not always listed. But soy is in a very large amount of products.

You could also search the forum for soy, if that's what you were asking (it wasn't clear), there's quite a bit of info here and with all the articles on SOTT, you'll have plenty to read. :) And as NE said, soy and other nasty stuff is in A LOT of food, including animals in CAFO's fed on soy and other grains, and the vast majority of soy IS GM.

But, again, I'm unclear if you've confirmed that it was soy in the chicken (or fed on soy) or you're only assuming.

Thanks everyone for your comments! I will post in the newbie section. I confirmed by reading the applegate boxes as a last resort on what was making me sick.... that there is soy used in the product. I also wrote to Applegate and they apologized and would make it more well known that there is soy in the product. They mentioned they may change their packaging to reflect on the front that the product contains soy.

Also, I had that reaction to TOFU months back and it was similar. I guess high concentrations of soy are what I am allergic too. I realize so many products have soy in them. Now I look, even a salad dressing that reads Balsamic dressing has soy and wheat. So many products do have soy, that I am watching what I eat constantly now.

I am 39 and never had a soy reaction until the TOFU and Applegate.

I went to my chiropractor and he did a NAET test with me unknowingly holding a vile of soy oil, and my strength test was poor holding the vile.

I really can only say I felt awful that week I started eating the product and it had an awful side effect that isn't going away. :(

I guess everyone reacts differently. But I will check the site. My daughter also vomited midweek of eating the product. i am hoping nothing else was wrong with the product. I am hoping it is just our intolerance of soy.

Hey breathedeep,

When you said you had the patties, did you mean the chicken patties?

http://www.applegatefarms.com/products/chicken_patties.aspx

Yes I had these products:

http://www.applegatefarms.com/products/chicken_patties.aspx
http://www.applegatefarms.com/products/organic_chicken_strips.aspx
And the grilled chicken strips, which is what I started out with......we also tried the nuggets.

I am reading that some soy is used with HEXANE which could be my reaction/poisoning. So I asked Applegate if they use soy or soy oil which as treated with HEXANE. I am waiting for a response.

Hexane is a byproduct of gasoline. It is used as a solvent for glues (rubber cement, adhesives), varnishes, and inks, and also as a degreaser in the printing industry. You might be surprised to know that hexane is also used to extract edible oils from seed and vegetable crops – primarily soybeans. And that, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), short-term exposure to hexane at high doses can affect the central nervous system. Neurotoxic effects have also been demonstrated in animal studies. Manufacturers of natural foods use only expeller-pressed oils and fats that do not involve the use of hexane in the crushing process. However, the resulting “residual soy meal” is used in many soy protein powders that are turned into cereals, bars, smoothies, and other foods touted as “natural.”

Many companies first make expeller pressed oil and then treat the oil with chemicals like Hexane to extract the remaining oil from the source

I know for sure they use soy oil, but am researching if they use GMO soy filler which other people have stated they do use, on their product review board. the patties and nuggets taste processed and not as real as the chicken grilled strips. I personally felt it tasted like filler.
