Turkey’s government appears to have been overthrown in a coup, as the military claimed taking control over the country.
Heavily armed soldiers and military vehicles closed the two main bridges in Istanbul Friday evening, and while low-flying military jets could be heard overhead.

Access to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube is being blocked, while the state-owned TRT television has gone off the air, according to reports from inside Turkey.

Coincidentally, today marks also the 42 years since the coup in Cyprus in 1974, that became the excuse for Turkey to invade - and occupy until today - the island. And this little news has been circulating around Greek media today:

US Secretary of State, John Kerry used the term ‘military invasion’ for the first time, referring to the Turkish occupying forces in the northern part of Cyprus. During an event on the US Department of State’s initiatives to modernise Embassies and Consulates abroad Kerry used the term, contrary to official US diplomatic documents that use the term ‘military intervention’. During his speech in acknowledgement of the 40-year long services on the state department of Assistant Secretary Bureau of Consular Affairs, Michele Bond, Kerry said: ‘….she was assigned on the special task force dealing with the invasion of Cyprus’.

Re: Shooting heard in Ankara

Turkey's leaders start to talk with Russia and suddenly what happens is a coup. We know that the US has access to Turkey's military command at some level. Like they did with the downing of the Russian SU-25.

Western media has been hyping up Erdogan as the dictator of Turkey for months. They were plotting his downfall for public opinion. Whatever happens now, someone far worse than Erdogan may come in power. Someone who is willing to sacrifice Turkey and invade Syria on behalf of US hegemony.

Looks like preparations for the Great Syrian War began. US trying to show muscle and may want Turkey as a platform to launch attacks en masse on Syria.

Yes, that and also the fact that Turkey started talking to the Syrian government is likely driving these events. The recent change in stance by Turkey must have not gone down well with the US and Israel. You almost get the impression that the bullies don't care anymore about the risk of getting caught red handed. You can really see the psychopathic mind at work in plain sight.

Turkish military declares takeover of country, top officials reportedly taken hostage

Turkey’s government appears to have been overthrown in a coup, as the military claimed taking control over the country.
Heavily armed soldiers and military vehicles closed the two main bridges in Istanbul Friday evening, and while low-flying military jets could be heard overhead.

“Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command," Prime Minister Bulent Yildirim said, in comments broadcast by private channel NTV.

Tanks have been posted outside Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport, while armored vehicles were photographed outside TRT offices.

All flights from Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport have been canceled, Reuters reported citing a witness.

The Turkish military announced it was seizing power in the country “to protect the democratic order and to maintain human rights.”

No, I don't like it when people are caught in between either. I don't like it even when I think US/NATO/Israel might be behind this coup. Whatever their plans, it ain't for good. But I recall reading on Greek SOTT last year sometime, that there was a fear for a coup in Turkey from the army, a lot of generals were not happy with Erdogan's handling of the country, or something to this effect. I can't find that article now though.

Erdogan has been digging his own grave at both sides of the fence for a while. The PTB are not satisfied with him and a significant amount of the Turkish population wants him gone. Both for completely different reasons ofcourse.

I don't want to be all to pessimistic about it. But coups in this world usually are US controlled.

If Turkey's stand on Russia and Syria will turn out more hostile than ever. We know enough, the war in Syria will evolve in something else entirely.

Turkey army group announces takeover on TV
2 minutes ago
From the section Europe

An army group in Turkey says it has taken control of the country, with bridges closed in Istanbul and aircraft flying low over Ankara.

PM Binali Yildirim earlier denounced an "illegal action" by a military "group", stressing it was not a coup. He said that the government remained in charge.

Traffic has been stopped from crossing both the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges in Istanbul.

There are reports of gunshots in the capital Ankara.

Other reports said soldiers were inside buildings of the Turkish state broadcaster in Ankara.

Gunfire was also heard outside Istanbul police HQ and tanks are said to be stationed outside Istanbul airport. All flights are cancelled.

CNN Turk reported that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was "safe" but did not elaborate.

A statement from the military group read out on NTV television said: "The power in the country has been seized in its entirety." Who represents the group remains uncertain.

A Turkish presidential source told Reuters that the statement was not authorised by the military command.

Mr Yildirim told NTV by telephone: "We are working on the possibility of an attempt. We will not allow this attempt.

"Those who are in this illegal act will pay the highest price," he added, saying it would not be correct to describe the move as a "coup".

He said: "There was an illegal act by a group within the military that was acting out of the chain of military command. Our people should know that we will not allow any activity that would harm democracy."

There are reports Turkey's top general has been taken hostage at the military HQ.

Visiting Moscow, US Secretary of State John Kerry said he hoped for peace and "continuity" in Turkey.

Re: Shooting heard in Ankara - Military Coup?

When Erdogan was whining and complaining about people making fun of him, and trying to blackmail Germany, I just lost all hope for Turkey.

Hmmm.... maybe that blackmailing of Germany has some connection to this current event?
