The Turkish army says it has taken power over the country and that the rule of law must remain a priority.

"The power in the country has been seized in its entirety," said a military statement read on NTV television, without giving further details.

The statement added that the military aims to "reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms," and "to ensure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for the law and order to be reinstated."

"All international agreements and commitments will remain. We pledge that good relations with all world countries will continue," the military statement added.

"All international agreements and commitments will remain. We pledge that good relations with all world countries will continue," the military statement added.

Erdogan vows to overcome situation

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is reportedly safe, although there has been no immediate report about his whereabouts.

Speaking on cellphone to CNN Turk, the Turkish president said this is an act encouraged by "parallel structure".

He also called on the Turkish people to take to flood the streets and defy a curfew that has been imposed nationwide, adding that the attempted coup will be resolved within a short time.

Reports say the Turkish president is returning to the capital Ankara, contradicting earlier reports that he was leaving the country.

Turkey's Hurriyet Daily News quoted Erdogan as telling CNN Turk that the US-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen was to blame for the attempted coup.

“We will not leave the ground to them,” Erdogan further said, vowing to end the “occupation” by the “minority group”.

The country’s state news agency reports that Turkey's chief of military staff, Hulusi Akar, is being “held hostage” at the military headquarters.

A correspondent for Turkey’s state broadcaster TRT has told Reuters that soldiers are inside the broadcaster’s building.

Earlier, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said an "illegal attempt" by "a group" in the military was underway in the country and security forces were taking necessary measures to resolve the situation.

He said those involved in the coup attempt will "pay the highest price".

Reports say that a number of tanks have surrounded the Turkish parliament and have opened fire near the building. Turkish broadcaster NTV also aired footage of tanks at the entrance to Istanbul’s Ataturk airport.

Gunfire can be heard across the capital as military warplanes and helicopters are flying low over the city.

Helicopters have also been flying over Istanbul, the country's biggest city, whose Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges are reported to have been closed by military forces.

Global reactions pouring in

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif expressed his deep concern about the crisis in neighboring Turkey in a message on his twitter account, saying "stability, democracy and the safety of the Turkish people are paramount."

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov sain on Saturday that bloodshed should be avoided in Turkey, and that the situation should be settled within a constitutional framework. He also called on his countrymen in Turkey to stay indoors.

The Russian foreign minister made the statement during a joint press conference with his US counterpart John Kerry, who also expressed hope for peace in Turkey.

“I hope there will be stability and peace and continuity within Turkey, but I have nothing to add on what has transpired at this moment,” Kerry was quoted by US media as saying.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini called for "restraint" in Turkey after the attempted coup.

"In constant contact with EU Delegation in Ankara & Brussels from Mongolia. Call for restraint and respect for democratic institutions #Turkey," she wrote in a tweeted from a regional summit in Ulaanbaatar.

Bit of background

This is the 5th coup in 55 years in Turkey. Turkey has historically been riven with internal factions vying for power. Erdogan and his Freedom and Justice party tried to sideline the other factions, hence their authoritarian approach in recent years. The other main factions are the Kemalist Turkish nationalists (Turkish military and deep state) who are mainly secular, and second are the supporters of the super-rich Turkish businessman Fetullah Gulen who is exiled in the USA and resides there at the pleasure of the CIA etc.

Who exactly is behind this coup remains to be seen, but Erdogan himself has been pointing the finger at Gulen for a while now, and even blamed him for the shoot down of the Russian plane last year.

If true, then this is a CIA coup. Let's face it, it's not like they are new to the practice.

Erdogan and his coterie were such a bunch of idiots though, so it's hard to not see the back of them as a positive thing.

İt's too soon to tell exactly but it smells another plot by Erdogan to persuade the public for a regime change and become president.

About Gülen on wiki _https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fethullah_G%C3%BClen

Muhammed Fethullah Gülen (born 27 April 1941) is a Turkish preacher,[5] former imam,[5][6] writer,[7] and political figure.[8] He is the founder of the Gülen movement (known as Hizmet meaning service in Turkish). He currently lives in self-imposed exile in the United States, residing in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania.[9][10][11]

Gülen teaches a Hanafi version of Islam, deriving from Sunni Muslim scholar Said Nursî's teachings. Gülen has stated that he believes in science, interfaith dialogue among the People of the Book, and multi-party democracy.[12] He has initiated such dialogue with the Vatican[13] and some Jewish organizations.[14]

Gülen is actively involved in the societal debate concerning the future of the Turkish state, and Islam in the modern world. He has been described in the English-language media as an imam "who promotes a tolerant Islam which emphasises altruism, hard work and education" and as "one of the world's most important Muslim figures."[15][12]

Gülen was an ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan before 2013. The alliance was destroyed after alleged 2013 corruption investigations in Turkey.[16][17][18][19][20] Erdogan accused Gülen for being behind the corruption investigations.[21] He is currently on Turkey's most-wanted terrorist list and is accused of leading what the current Turkish officials call the Gulenist Terror Organisation (FETO).[22][23] A Turkish criminal court issued an arrest warrant for Gülen.[24][25] Turkey is demanding the extradition of Gülen from the United States.[17][26][27] However, so far there is no Turkish court decision that charges Gulen or his followers with any terrorist activity.[28][29][30]

Erdogan Blames Gulenist Network, Calls on Public to Fight in Public Squares

Despite losing control of the government, Erdogan remained defiant declaring that those responsible for the attack would face a heavy price and that the coup would be stopped in a "short time."

"It is know that there was a coup attempt," said Erdogan. "I'm waiting for all of our people on the streets and squares. Together we will give an adequate response. It is know that this attempted coup was led by the "Parallel Structure." The instigators of the coup will suffer severe punishment and will pay dearly for it."

"Parallel Structure" is a reference to followers of Fethullah Gulen, also known as Gulenists, a US-based Muslim cleric who has repeatedly been accused of attempting to foment an uprising against the Turkish government.

Or he is trying to manipulate the people to defend him. Dictators loves to invent enemies :)

If it is a CIA thing, Kurdish nation may become a reality as in brzezinski grand chessboard .i.e. more turkish involvement in Syria. Well, Putin won't be sitting idle though.

Indeed. Erdogan was an arrogant fool. He could, and should have picked a side in the ongoing geopolitical war between Russia/China and the West, understanding that Turkey is too small to 'go it alone'.

But he figured he could do just that, that he could "hold his own with the big boys" and craft a new Ottoman Empire out of the chaos in Syria and Iraq and play NATO and Russia/Eurasia off against each other and get something from each, on his terms. Bad idea.

Assad at least had the perspicacity to throw his lot in, fully, with Russia. Erdogan did not. And now he has nothing. But worst of all, the Turkish people may pay the price for his foolishness and arrogance, in the form of a civil war.

sputnik reports that a F-16 has shot a helicopter. If verified, the military is divided and there is a risk of a civil war.

US most likely had a role in this coup. But Erdogan has many enemies from all sides. Different factions could work together here with different agenda's. This coup could turn against the PTB. There is always that chance. But if that happens I fear the US will go all in to instigate civil war in Turkey. If everything fails, spread more chaos. That's how the Empire of Chaos operates. OSIT.

Yep, and it also seems like the police are not playing along. Lots of chaos likely, which kind of points the finger at an external force, with a lot of experience of staging coups in foreign nations and igniting civil wars (Ukraine anyone?) about which they care little, in fact, it's something they incorporate as part of the plan. Nothing like a bit of "creative destruction" to reset the country and move in afterwards and pick up the pieces.

Turkish Authorities Claim Coup Attempt Suppressed, Mutineers Being Arrested

And now this

The Alliance for Shared Values (AfSV), a non-profit group linked to Turkish opposition cleric Fethullah Gulen, issued a statement condemning the attempt.

"We condemn any military intervention in [the] domestic politics of Turkey," the statement reads.

This looks like as a fake coup, a theater , a false flag op.

This remainds me the book "shock doctrine"
and this is like the NAZI's Reichstag fire to achieve a more authocratic regime.
