Ketogenic Diet - Powerful Dietary Strategy for Certain Conditions

In contrast, for days now I’ve been back to seldom using the toilet. I still haven’t gotten the magnesium supplements that are supposed to help with this because I can’t afford them right now. But is this something I have to rely on?
Magnesium citrate is pretty inexpensive. If I didn't take it every night before bed, I probably wouldn't be using the toilet much either. I don't know that you have to rely on it, but it makes things easier.

I've read that some people take epsom salt to help relieve that situation, so you might check into that. The salts are cheap and are available in any place like Walgreens, Target, Walmart, some grocery stores, etc.

Don’t underestimate other people’s financial situation. But I appreciate your input. Maybe I should make this a priority.

Can you not add in a small amount of carbs like one potato a day at lunch? Or maybe even like a bit of rice. Other members have added such things to help with going to the toilet.
I have a small amount of carbs but also take magnesium glycinate each night.

So I’ve been on a keto / carnivore-ish diet for less than two months and as I mentioned before I think I’ve adapted rather naturally to it. That said, I still feel like something is not right with my digestion.

I believe that when I started taking folate (B9) with B12, (with the whole protocol) it made a big difference for me. But I also take magnesium from time to time. I don't know if others have noticed this.

I don’t feel any sense of bloating or discomfort like I used to experience on a “regular” unhealthy diet, but going to the bathroom is just a rare experience, and I can tell that it accumulates on my lower stomach. I hate the heavy feeling and feel like this should not be happening.

I had a piece (less than half) of a super processed supermarket apple fritter (pastry), thinking that it’s been long enough and it wouldn’t be a big deal. Well long story short, I did not leave the toilet the next day and even ended up with hemorrhoids. Thankfully I’ve since healed. But this is something that I don’t want to experience again.

I had similar issues as you, so I looked for the food which had the highest fibre to carbohydrate ratio, and Flaxseed (or linseed) appears to be the best.

I just keep a bag of the seeds in the fridge, and grind them up with a spice grinder as needed, otherwise the powder goes rancid.

Then I mix as much with plain yoghurt as is bearable, and leave to soak in the fridge overnight if you want.

The other thing you could do is take more animal fat into your diet, as this aids movements.

This terrifies me. I literally feel so good on this diet, the only thing I regret is not being able to start at 15 years old when I first discovered it through this medium. I had three delicious grapes after my very fatty meal last night, and immediately my stomach became bloated. My stomach never gets bloated anymore even though I eat until I’m disgustingly full. I still have a pretty package of Japanese sticky rice that I never even got to open, that I never threw/gave away in case I may need it at some point. But as long as I’m able to, I will refuse to eat straight carbs.

A multi B vitamin is on my list. There are too many things on my list 🥲 But I moved the Magnesium high on that list to start with.

I don’t think adding more fat is possible at this point. I’ve been slowly and naturally upping the fat content as much as I’m able to and I think I’m doing pretty good on this regard, but I’d love to see other people’s meals to compare.

I downloaded TikTok just to see how other people are doing their keto and it was unbearable to watch. I had to delete it again.

As for flaxseeds: I wasn’t paying much attention to the whole topic of oxalates because I didn’t want to overwhelm myself with so much information all at once but now I’ve become more aware of it. Apparently flaxseeds have a good amount of oxalates so I wouldn’t even feel comfortable introducing that into my meals. A lot of things I already eat have oxalates in them which is disappointing (staple spices like turmeric, ginger, and even cinnamon which I barely use). I’ve also been drinking a lot of tea at work lately… also a lot of oxalates. Sigh.

You can prepare magnesium citrate in situ from milk of magnesia and lemon juice. Mix one tablespoon of magnesium milk in one glass of water, add the necessary amount of lemon juice and mix until it become translucent, this is, until the white color dissapears.

Might as well just buy the bottle of actual magnesium. Supplements add up quickly that’s all. I’ll get it when I’m able to.

On a keto/ carnivorous diet most of the fecal matter is composed of dead bacteria from the gut microbiome - most things in meat is absorbed. In contrast, a lot of plant fibres are indigestible and make the bulk of the fecal mass in eaters of a standard diet.

So its perfectly normal to only have to go to the loo a few times per week. What should guide you is rather consistency of your feces - if they are soft and well formed (Bristol Stool Chart 3 & 4) all is well. If the feces are hard and come out in little lumps, you probably will benefit from magnesium.

Thank you all! I have dealt with internal constipation pretty much my whole life so it’s a bit concerning not going as often now. But I think it looks good! lol.

It’s just a little weird to not feel “light” but it’s not something that gets in the way at all. It doesn’t feel like a detriment. But I will have to keep monitoring this; especially after the magnesium.
