Today, I was waiting in the lobby waiting for an oil change and a chap
came in and we were watching the Discovery Channel. The subject came
up: "The UFO Coverup: Roswell", and I looked at him and casually asked
him: "Do you believe in this stuff?"
He shook his head and said: "I don't really know". Then we reminiscently
talked about movies such as "The Day the Earth Stood Still", "Close Encounters
of The Third Kind", and then I remarked that there are movies showing aliens both
as benevolent as well as malevolent and gave and malevolent example such as
"To Serve Man", "V", and he chuckled. From our conversation thus far, I sensed
an open mind from this chap.
We somehow diverged from there and the subject of Smoking came up and he was
rattling about smoking and how bad it was for people. I told him that I was a smoker
and I have my reasons to stop smoking and to take it up again. Acting surprised
as if he offended me (as he didn't) and I said: "Are you willing to take a look at
if from another point of view? He replied: "Ok, I'll bite. Tell me why you think
smoking is good for you?"
I explained to him that there were many examples of why prescription drugs are
not designed for everyone and that some people actually are maimed or killed
and explained examples of VIOXX and others where this is actually true. I also
explained that flu shots have killed and maimed as well due to additives and he
immediately agreed but not before telling me about how flu shots caused an
adverse reaction to him and how he came to refuse it because he said that his
family had "good genes" and that they did not need this stuff.
I made it clear, that "Cancer" is a general term applied to many kinds of diseases
that many practitioners and doctors do not fully understand these diseases and tend
to lump everything into a single term and most people come to think of cancer caused
by smoking alone and this is very controversial.
Next, I explained that studies have shown the benefits of nicotine, how it helps
some patients to reduce the effects of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases,
and makes blood vessels more pliant (as opposed to being stiff, rigid) and
increases blood flows and raises hemoglobin levels and so on. I also explained
to him that smoking was not for everyone but does have beneficial properties
for those who can make use of it.
He replied: "Wow". He also asked: "Well, why do you smoke it? Why not direct
delivery?". I replied that smoking is the best delivery system there is, and it is
redly diffused into our system, whereas injections are more localized and may
cause problems in and of itself. I also explained that the problem with tobacco
is that many manufacturers have altered the tobacco itself, by modifying the
genetics as well as adding additives, some 100+ chemicals into it for reasons
that are not fully explained, which is why I choose natural tobacco wherever
I can find it and if you prefer a cigarette type of delivery then perhaps Organic
or Natural American Spirits tobacco is the way to go as I have found many people
have switched to this product. I explained that I smoke with a pipe. He then asked
me now much I smoke. I explained to him that moderation is the key and how much
is needed depends solely on the individual and some will smoke one or who packs a
day and so on. But I smoke somewhere between one or two pipe bowls of natural
tobacco in the course of the day and some days I don't smoke at all.
It was VERY interesting that he started talking about laws and ordinances banning
tobacco users from bars to the home and remarked that this was not right. He said
that owners of establishments and users should have the right to smoke so as long
as they take personal responsibilities towards others where noted and that bar owners
should have the right to having "smoking establishments" providing that it is clearly
posted for that others thinking of entering know in advance as to the establishment
they are entering into. It's about personal choice.
I simply agreed and explained to him that since my wife objects to smoking, I have
designated a room in my house as my "smoking room" and everything worked out
just fine.
Before I left, he remarked to me: "Thank you for educating me about smoking, I
really did not know and now I have more respect for those who wish to smoke."
He also remarked that he was a retired doctor. My jaw dropped!
Wow. What a trip!
