2 dead, 14 injured after shooting at Texas homecoming party

GREENVILLE, Texas (AP) Oct. 27, 2019 - A gunman opened fire at an off-campus party for a nearby Texas college, leaving two people dead and 14 injured before he escaped in the ensuing chaos, a sheriff said Sunday.

Authorities believe the shooter may have been targeting just one person at the party of about 750 people outside Greenville, 15 miles (24 kilometers) southwest of a satellite campus for Texas A&M University, and that others may have been shot at random, Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said.

The shooting took place around midnight Saturday at what Meeks described as a Halloween and homecoming party for Texas A&M University-Commerce, though officials have said it was not a school-sanctioned event. Meeks described "complete chaos" after the shots rang out, with hundreds of people fleeing, including the gunman. The injured included four people who did not have gunshot wounds but who were hurt in the melee, he said.

Authorities believe there was one male shooter who entered the venue through the back door and began firing with a handgun, Meeks said. Authorities were still looking for the suspect and did not yet know who he was or have a description of him.

The two people killed were both males, Meeks said, but he did not know if they were A&M-Commerce students. He said he believed four or five students may have been among those injured and estimated that most of the people at the party were in their late teens and early 20s. Some of the partygoers were wearing costumes, he said.

Word of the shooting spread online overnight, with many sharing on social media graphic video purported to show seriously wounded victims lying on the ground as crying and screaming could be heard in the background. "I just briefly saw one that was a very graphic video," Meeks said. "I don't know that's going to help anything at all."

Meeks said the party was held at a facility called The Party Venue and that the owner was cooperating with authorities. The venue sits along a highway in a rural area some 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from the Greenville city limits. Meeks said he was not aware of any surveillance video in the area.

Outside the venue Sunday, a few Halloween masks and other debris were strewn about. Pools of blood could be seen on the ground.

A patrol sergeant and deputy were at the venue when the shooting happened, having been called there for complaints about illegal parking, Meeks said. An off-duty Farmersville police officer was also there, working as security for the party.

Authorities were questioning someone who appeared to be intoxicated when they heard gunshots from the back of the building, Meeks said.

Meeks praised the patrol sergeant and deputy, saying the sergeant quickly determined that one of gunshot victims had life-threatening injuries and transported that person to a hospital, while the deputy triaged others until paramedics arrived.

The shooting came as Texas A&M University-Commerce, east of Dallas, celebrated homecoming weekend. According to its website, it is the second-largest university in the Texas A&M University System. The school was founded in 1889 and was known by several names, including East Texas State University, before joining the Texas A&M system in 1996. The university has around 6,000 undergraduate students and 4,000 graduate students.

PARIS, Oct 27 (Reuters) - French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, in a letter to police prefects seen by Reuters, called on Sunday for increased vigilance to prevent possible revenge attacks following the death of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

"... The possible intensification of jihadist propaganda following this death, which could possibly call for acts of vengeance, requires the most extreme vigilance, notable during public events in your departments in coming days," Castaner said.

The final neutralization of Abu Bakr al Baghdadi if on the one hand puts a definitive stop to the establishment of an Islamic Caliphate in the Middle East, the same cannot be said for the continuity of the mad jihadist ideal. Persecuted by the followers of the Fu-Caliph, by the militiamen of the prince of terror Oussama bin Laden, as well as by a myriad of Islamist groups scattered all over the world, the Jihad fi-sabiliIlah (understood as the struggle / battle for the cause of God), will represent the ultimate goal of existence for thousands of individuals for decades.

The ideal of a definitive affirmation of Islam as a planetary creed is what guides the thoughts and actions of a multitude of preachers, the Tablighs. With their words, aimed at obtaining new conversions or a change of forbidden habits on the part of the faithful of Islam, they do nothing but root in the already diverted minds of marginalized subjects an iron will for revenge against a world that has rejected them or as more and more often it happens, they create a dangerous consensus on the part of many who recognize themselves as "a symbol", in this case, the Sha'aria.

The initial success of ISIS, an acronym for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, also known as Daesh (Al Dawla Al Islamiya fi al Iraq wa al Sham), is an irrefutable fact. Within a few years it first gathered around thousands of individuals willing to sacrifice themselves in the name of the Islamist creed, then exported the jihadist ideal throughout the West, carrying out heinous acts in order to broaden the pool of support among the extremists even more reluctant to action, finally, created the basis for a revival of actions by autonomous cells.

After all, ISIS else has done nothing but follow in the footsteps of al Qaeda, starting from completely opposite assumptions. If bin Laden's organization considered the creation of an Islamic state premature by subjecting it to obtaining a basis of popular consensus, Daesh wanted to imprint its "trademark" on controlling portions of territory by subjecting them to its own domain. A phenomenon of Islamization from the very top of Salafi Islam that puts the supposed sharaitic obligation of conversion to any other compromise, in spite of the Koran, which stresses that "there is no compulsion in religion. The right way is well distinguished from the error. Whoever therefore rejects the idol and believes in Allah, clings to the firmer handle without the risk of failure. Allah is hearing, wise. "(Koran 2: 256).

The short-term risks are many. Revenge will be the watchword of the mujaheddin left orphaned by their guide and it is possible that some lone wolves will self-trigger in the name of the deceased at Baghdadi in the next few hours. But the latent danger also comes from al Qaeda and from the allied groups that certainly will intend to fill the void left by the ISIS that, while continuing to exist as a local organization, will have to completely reform the ranks to return to being fully operational internationally.

The Jihad is a constantly evolving network as economic and human losses are easily filled by the influx of capital obtained from harmless donations as well as from funding from states adjoining the Islamist ideology, while new mujaheddin levers are bred from Asian fields to European banlieues.

A network in reconstitution, therefore, that will act according to specific strategies dictated by the experiences of al Qaeda and Isis, based on the errors committed in the planning of the Islamist expansion: on the part of al Qaeda it has been lethal to undertake actions delocalized from a specific base of command, in this becoming an easily identifiable target; by the Daesh, the enormity of the initially conquered territories has led to a military collapse as a direct consequence of the impossibility of garrisoning the areas under its control. Hence the need to export guerrilla warfare also to Europe, especially for propaganda and recruitment, while exposing itself to the partial failure in terms of logistical organization and communication. A figure that, as highlighted, cannot alarm the jihadist leadership as their following is unfortunately destined to grow.

Description
Host Simon Spungin talks with award-winning freelance journalist Wilson Fache, who has just returned from Iraq and Syria, about the assassination of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Will Baghdadi's death change anything on the ground for the Kurdish minorities in Turkey, Syria and Iraq? Will Da'esh respond to its leader's death with a round of violent attacks? And what can we read into the fact that Baghdadi was killed in the Idlib Province of Syria – just a few miles from the border with Turkey? Follow Wilson Fache on Twitter.

Absolutely crazy situation in the northern Mexican city of Culiacan yesterday. The National Guard happened to come across one of the sons of "El Chapo" Guzmán (notorious drug baron now jailed in the US), so they grabbed him. In response, the cartel surrounded the NG, summoned dozens of sicarios (hitmen) from the region and started several shootings throughout the city, burning trucks, barricading roads and liberating prisoners from a jail in the process. The whole city was in a state of siege and spontaneous curfew as people ran into buildings not to go out again. Eventually the authorities gave in and released the so-called "Chapito" (little Chapo), apparently now head of the cartel. Some very dramatic videos appeared on social media - see the link below:

The situation in Mexico is a mess, to begin with, on the Political level - a lot of corruption in the ranks. The incident with the National Guards and Chapito will probably have repercussions down the line? One thing it did bring to the surface - how powerful the drug cartels are and the lengths they will go to - to get what they want! The National Guard, alone, is not going to be able to handle the problems there? Even some of the Judges and law enforcement have been bought off?

Yeah, not many details are available yet. Due to Black Friday it's quite crowded there. They're looking for a 45-50 y/o man who is a bit dark skinned (that's all I could find).

3 weeks ago I posted this on FB:

"I'll make a little prediction now, that if there is another "Muslim terror attack" in the UK before the Dec. 12th general election, it will be pretty clear evidence that the British establishment, as represented (as always) by the Conservative party, uses "Muslim terrorism" to maintain their position in power.

Why? Because "Muslim terrorism" was THE reason that a majority of British people voted for Brexit. If that reason were to be brought back, front and center, it would likely swing a general election vote in favor of the Conservatives, with the people thinking that by voting for the Conservatives they are voting for "Brexit" (and an end to immigration) when they are merely voting for 5 more years of Conservative party rule (and the continued destruction of the NHS)."

This has been uploaded from the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency (12 minutes ago), today. They employ the child card often.

Hi c.a., I'm not sure how this fits in this thread, or perhaps you can elaborate the link between the news item and this thread or recent events shared here (maybe I just don't see it!). Perhaps it is better suited in this thread with some of your thoughts on it. :-) One other thought: I don't think it's necessary to use hashtags in a forum post (your previous post, unless it's in the tweet itself of course)!

I just found the timing of interest considering the event in Holland at the train station.

Ah, I think you mean the event in Paris at the train station (the second tweet you posted). In that case, it could be helpful to write exactly that "I find the timing between this event in France, and this silly solidarity train interesting" or something along those lines, so that readers can see why you post it. Just a suggestion, as it wasn't completely clear for me at least at first!

Apologies for that. I some time's do that thinking it's obvious. And it was not.
I've never even heard of the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency before today.
So there part of the referendum or (perhaps even damage control), of controlling the narrative of those that object, via racism.
FWIW, and IMHO.
