Got around to reading the book myself and I cannot recommend it enough for understanding, as the subtitle suggests, the man and the controversy surrounding him and his music.
There's much about MJ that I didn't know. He was a voracious reader, infinitely curious, very smart, incredibly empathetic and kind, a loving father, and generous to a fault. The stories from people close to MJ showcase a depth of caring and of thought that were so heartwarming and unexpected it nearly defied belief given how he's been dragged through the mud by the press. The overarching sense of MJ that I got is that he really did care about the world as well as the people in it and did his level best with both his music and his wealth to make the world a better place.
This is what, ultimately, Wiesak thinks is the reason for the lawsuits and the media defamation. He was too good an influence in a world run by those who want war and division. He could not be allowed to stand up as an example of what those with power should do with their privilege as it was his belief that everyone had a duty to take care of God's creation by lessening the suffering of others and that, she thinks, was why he wasn't allowed to continue his mission unmolested, so to say.
She comes to this conclusion after detailing how the lawsuits and allegations fall apart under the most basic scrutiny and since they never should have been taken seriously the fact that they were, by both the law and the media, suggests something more than just MJ's music catalog rights were at stake behind the campaign to destroy his name and reputation, though she didn't put it that way. Yes, the music rights were worth a TON of money and certainly could have been part of the forces at work but on their own they don't seem to account for the whole of it.
Along with discussing the events in the trials, Wiesak also takes apart the narratives and credibility of the documentaries that were aimed against Michael, including Leaving Neverland. The long and short of it is that there are no credible accusers against MJ and judging by the way the accusations, the media slander, and his mistreatment hurt him emotionally and took a severe toll on his health that may have been the point given what we know about how The Matrix seems to break people's health to break their spirits.
Overall, I think it's a worthwhile read and it pains me to know how manipulated I was into thinking this thoughtful and caring man was some kind of debauched monster. He wasn't perfect and he had his issues, but he didn't deserve what he went through.
Not by a long shot.
