Near-Earth objects and close calls

@Antony Another meteorite in Russia?

On Tuesday night, April 11, an unknown object fell from the sky in Yekaterinburg, Sverdlovsk region. It looked like a meteorite, but it has not yet been confirmed to be one.

According to the publication, the incident occurred near the town of Bogdanovich, located 90 kilometers from Yekaterinburg, at 21:03 local time (19:03 Moscow time). After the crash, there was a bang like an explosion, which triggered car alarms, and also caused a fire. This was reported on local channels.

Locals in Yekaterinburg, Russia, filmed what appears to be the fall of a meteorite.
"In Yekaterinburg, not far from the Globe, the grass caught fire directly on the water. On the surface there were circles of fire like this. The sight is terrible," the report said.

Initial information that it could be a meteorite is still in doubt, as the fall followed a gentle downward trajectory and was accompanied by a strong flash1 and explosion.

The fall of a meteorite with such effects is almost impossible, the expert believes: "Meteorites don't fall like that. Stony meteorites, entering the atmosphere, squeeze the air in front of them and begin to glow from heating. At an altitude of just over 10 kilometers, they slow down sharply and then fall like ordinary stones. And only iron meteorites can fly at high speed to the ground, but there are few such meteorites, the phenomenon is very rare," explained Vladilen Sanakoev, an engineer at the educational observatory of the Ural Federal University, commenting on a question from the E1 portal.

Puma, yep, very strange story. Here they write that it was a provocation/show for cosmonautics day. But very strangely, i have a friend, living under moscow (western direction - 20 km). She wrote to me that yesterday during yearly morning 04.15 - there was such a bang - that everyone jumped up couple of miles radius. There was not storm/lightning anything of that kind. Just very loud kaboom. And a few minutes later jet planes sound. Somebody suggested that military jet went through the sound barrier. But they do not usually fly that speed over residential areas especially when the governmental top officials/oligarchs live 10 minutes away😅 It was not on the news, only in messengers etc. 💁‍♂️

The mystery of the unidentified object that fell near Yekaterinburg has been revealed
April 12, 2023

In the Urals, an unidentified object similar to a meteorite was filmed falling. A few hours later it turned out that it was.

Videos and photos of an unidentified object falling in the Urals are being distributed on social networks. Many have suggested that we are talking about a meteorite. But in fact there was no UFO, and the footage turned out to be staged. This is reported by the telegram channel "Caution, news".

A video with a falling celestial body "started" in social networks late in the evening on April 11. According to eyewitnesses, the UFO allegedly fell near Bogdanovich, near Yekaterinburg. Judging by the sound in the video, there was a deafening bang in the area of the fall.
At the same time, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in the Sverdlovsk region kept silent about the incident.
Later it turned out that no unidentified object in the Urals had fallen the day before. The videos that appeared on social networks are staged shots dedicated to the celebration of Cosmonautics Day (April 12).
As reported in the telegram channel, the videos were uploaded to social networks through the "Offer news" function:
- For example, 21-year-old actor Nikita S. appears in one of the videos - they tried to publish him through a suggestion. Later, the young man's girlfriend posted a post on social networks with the caption "creating infopods from the void" and deleted it after our question. After some time, another staged video appeared on the network, where "police officers" allegedly did not let an eyewitness to the crash site (he was also sent to the local public's offer by a participant in the filming process). Later, another video appeared on social networks, where there is a "UFO" at the “crash site”. Today is April 12, when Cosmonautics Day is celebrated. All the videos with the "meteorite fall" are part of the "viral campaign".

Locals are reporting that a bright "bolide" meteor was sighted over Israel.

The bolide crossed the sky at a fast speed going northeast, and was seen for approximately three seconds before exploding. Many locals reported hearing a supersonic boom.

The Israeli Astronomical Association says it received reports of an explosion that was heard after the bolide was sighted. "We heard a boom like from a plane," commented one Facebook user on the association's post concerning the meteor.

Another Facebook user wrote: "It was heard well above Ramat Gan," "What a boom!" wrote another. Other users shared that they thought it was a missile or an Iron Dome interception.

Explosion heard throughout Israel and Palestine and speculation that it is a meteorite

The observation of a spectacular meteorite in Israel and Palestine has generated a great deal of attention from the scientific community, which is seeking to analyze the information gathered to obtain more details about the celestial object and its possible origin.

An extremely bright bolide was detected in Israel, accompanied by a deafening sound, which has generated great interest among experts and the general public.

The Israel Astronomy Association (IAA) announced that the bright meteor, also known as a bolide, was visible for several seconds in a northeasterly direction over central and northern Israel at around 5:16 pm on Saturday. This type of event is rare in the area.

Asteroid hits Earth hours after being spotted, meteor turns into 'beautiful' fireball over Europe
An asteroid hit Earth hours after it was discovered Monday, turning into a dazzling fireball that was spotted throughout Europe.

Around 12:18 p.m. ET Sunday, astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky detected an asteroid—initially dubbed Sar2667—at the Piszkéstető Observatory in Hungary, the European Space Agency said in a news release. After a second observation was made minutes later, it was reported to the International Astronomical Union Minor Planet Center.
'100% impact probability'
About 40 minutes after the asteroid was discovered, the Višnjan Observatory in Croatia confirmed the object. The ESA said various impact assessment systems observed the asteroid and determined it has a "100% impact probability" above the English Channel—the strip of the Atlantic Ocean between southern England and northern France.
Luckily, astronomers said it was a 3-foot asteroid, officially named 2023 CX1, meaning it posed no threat to Earth or humanity.
Asteroid 2023 CX1 hits Earth, turns into fireball seen throughout Europe
Astronomers around the world continued to observe the asteroid through Sunday night into Monday morning, spotting it until it became "invisible" as it fell into Earth's shadow, the ESA said.

At 2:58 a.m. UT (9:58 p.m. ET), the asteroid entered Earth's atmosphere, turning into a "beautiful fireball" that streaked across the European skies. A fireball is another name for an usually bright meteor that has burned up in Earth's atmosphere, NASA says.

The meteor was spotted throughout western Europe, as the International Meteor Organization said it received 61 reports of the fireball across Wales, England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

The ESA said its possible some fragments of the asteroid could have survived and made it near the coast north of Rouen in Normandy, France.

Several videos of the fireball were posted on Twitter.
Asteroids spotted just before hitting Earth
Officials said this was the seventh time an asteroid had been detected just before it hit Earth.
One of the most recent instances also involved Sárneczky; in March 2022, a fridge-sized asteroid—about 6 1/2 -feet-long—hit Earth two hours after he initially spotted it.

NASA's Asteroid Watch said although asteroids like 2023 CX1 aren't a threat to humanity, they are an "excellent exercise" of Earth's planetary defense capabilities, as the ESA added spotting these asteroids just before they hit Earth is "a sign of the rapid advances in global detection capabilities."

Also this one but had not been able to verified it.

Suspected bolide over Kiev, of all places. A bright flash on several videos and a couple showing the object breaking up, which I posted in the Ukraine thread.

Yeah, looks very much like what we see across the Sott Earth Changes Summary each month.

Apparently the Kiev junta say it was this

But most likely fragmenting bolide. A 660 pound chunk of metal is not gonna make that kind of flash. More likely a few dozen ton metaly space rock.

How does the recent observation from Kiev:
Suspected bolide over Kiev, of all places. A bright flash on several videos and a couple showing the object breaking up, which I posted in the Ukraine thread.

compare with this from 2019:

There is more in an updated Tweet:

Looking into the NASA list, the fireball has entered on top of the 2023 list in more than one sense:

8:22 UT is about the same as 8:22 UTC or 10:22 local time. Apart from the map in the Tweet, the location can be found by entering the above coordinates on Google Maps:

This morning just before 9am, we heard a loud boom that shook the windows of the house. Niall was outside at the time and said he heard a strange sound kind of like a 'car horn', but not really, just before the explosion. Clear blue sky. If it was a bolide, it's an interesting coincidence after last night's event over the Kiev area.

Contrary to what the Kiev junta claimed, NASA said it was not their satellite.

Regarding the object seen over Kiev, Ukraine, according to news reports, this object was also observed over Gomel and other towns of Belarus at the same time. Translated via deepl:
Tonight a bright meteorite flew over Gomel in the sky

The editorial office of "Strong News" received footage showing a bright celestial body resembling a meteorite flying over the city.

Similar phenomenon at the same time was observed by residents of some other Belarusian cities.

The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reported that the phenomenon is in no way related to the fall of the RHESSI research satellite, which was due to enter the Earth's atmosphere on Wednesday night.

Another version is the Liridian meteor shower, which can be observed by the inhabitants of Belarus these days. Astronomers assured that you can see the stream of meteors with the naked eye.

By the way, a meteorite fall simulator appeared in the web at the end of last year. The site allows you to simulate the fall of a celestial body anywhere on Earth. You can set the density of the meteorite, its size, speed and even the angle of entry into the Earth's atmosphere.

Gomel is located about 200+ km away from Kiev. The object over Kiev and Gomel was observed at the same time: 21.56 p.m.

An update from Ukrainskaya Pravda in Kiev where they try to explain what happened last night. An interesting passage is:
To reassure residents and guests of the capital, the Kiev City Military Administration published information about the likely fall of the American satellite and marked "preliminary information"!

Flash was seen even in Belarus, air defense over Kiev did not work-Ignat

FLASH IN KIEV. SCREENSHOT FROM A VIDEO FROM TELEGRAM CHANNELS
Air Force spokesman Yuri Ignat said that during the flash in the sky on the evening of April 19, the air defense system in the Kiev region did not work, and a bright glow was seen even in Belarus.
Source: Ignat on the air of the national marathon of news on the morning of April 20, Kiev City Military Administration in Telegram
Ignat's direct speech: "The air force did not work in this direction – this is unequivocal. The air forces were working on "Shaheds" in the eastern direction when this phenomenon was observed-a flash in the sky-ed.)
What was that? If you don't use scientific language, as the "high-energy acoustic event" has already been reported, then it was probably a meteor."
Details: he also explained that the alarm was issued because there was a war going on in the country, and an "explosion" was seen in the sky, so it was natural that the air forces reacted and turned on sirens to find out what was going on.
Ignat could not comment on whether any remnants of this probable meteorite were found, because the air force does not deal with space bodies.
Ignat's direct speech: "This outbreak was seen even in Belarus – it has already been published even in their channels. So it wasn't that close to finding any wreckage. I think that special services will deal with this, but it is possible that this body actually burned up in the atmosphere. But the Air Force can't comment on such things - we need experts here (on this issue – ed.)."

Details: The Kiev city military administration on the morning of April 20 also reported that the day before it was in a hurry to announce the fall of the satellite.
Direct speech of the head of the KMVA Sergey Popko: "a very bright glow from the fall of an unknown object caused Kiev residents excitement and concern. To reassure residents and guests of the capital, the Kiev City Military Administration published information about the likely fall of the American satellite and marked "preliminary information"! At that time, there were no data or warnings about the possible entry of a significant space body into the Earth's atmosphere from any of the world's aerospace agencies or astronomical observatories. However, there was a warning from NASA about their space satellite falling to Earth."
Details: Popko added that after the official statement of NASA KMVA can give updated information – it was not their satellite. But what exactly caused the bright flash in the sky – experts should find out.
Background:
  • In the evening of April 19, an air alert was announced in the east of Ukraine, as well as in the Kiev region, and it was also reported that an air target was noticed in the sky of the Kiev region.
  • In addition, residents of the capital reported that they saw a bright flash in the sky.
  • Pinishe in KMVA reported that a bright flash in the sky over Kiev, according to preliminary data, is the result of a NASA space satellite falling to Earth. The air force said that the flash could also cause a meteorite.
  • Later, The Alpha Centauri project reported that it was not a NASA satellite that burned down over Kiev, but a Bolide (meteor).
  • The main Special Control Center under the Ukrainian Space Agency reported that it recorded a high-energy acoustic event during a flare in Kiev on April 19.
I tried to look up the high-energy acoustic event and found an article with a diagram showing the event:
