August 03, 2019 - Police in Scotland say two pilots have been arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs before a scheduled flight to New Jersey. (USA)

The flight, United Airlines 162 to Newark, New Jersey, was due to leave Glasgow Airport at 9 a.m. on Sunday. It was canceled after the arrests.

Police Scotland says the 61-year-old and 45-year-old pilots were held under the section of a transportation safety law that covers on the job intoxication and impairment for aviation.

Under the law, the legal alcohol limit for pilots, navigators and other flight personnel subjected to breath tests is less than half the drink-drive limit for motorists on Scotland’s roads.

Remains of British woman who fell from plane found in Madagascar
Police said on Wednesday they had found the remains of a British woman who fell 1,200 meters (4,000 feet) from a light aircraft in the remote north of Madagascar last month.

Alana Cutland, a 19-year-old Cambridge University student, was visiting the island on an internship complementing her studies in natural sciences, her family has said.

Police said the remains were found on Tuesday, and would be sent to the capital Antananarivo for an autopsy. Authorities are not pursuing a criminal inquiry in the case, Andrianoasy Ralaivaonary, local gendarmerie commander in Mahajanga, said in a statement.

According to police, Cutland opened the door shortly after take-off and the pilot and the other passenger on board were unable to restrain her from jumping out.

In a statement last week, Cutland’s family described her as “a bright, independent young woman, who was loved and admired by all those that knew her.”

“Her thirst for discovering more of the world always ensured she made the most of every second of her action-packed young life.”

August 27, 2019 - GENEVA - A British composer of film and television music and an acclaimed saxophonist died along with their baby in a plane crash in Switzerland on Sunday, a family spokesman said on Tuesday.

The couple, Jonathan Goldstein and Hannah Marcinowicz, had posted updates of their trip on Facebook, with a last update from Lausanne on Saturday afternoon and pictures of him flying their small plane while she held their infant daughter. They left Lausanne’s La Blecherette airport early on Sunday.

Police in the Swiss canton of Valais did not name the family but said a Piper aircraft heading for Italy crashed into the Simplon Pass in the Alps around 10.25 a.m. (0825 GMT) on Sunday, after taking off from a Swiss airfield, killing three people including a baby.

“We are all devastated by the news of Jonathan, Hannah and Saskia’s deaths. We loved them all so very much. They were so happy together and we will miss them terribly,” the family spokesman said in a statement. “We would ask the media to respect the family’s privacy at this extremely difficult time.”

Goldstein had worked on films including “Cape Fear” and was a prolific composer of music for television and cinema commercials. Marcinowicz, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, had played with many of Britain’s leading orchestras, according to her website.

Goldstein also headed Goldstein Music Group, a production agency providing music and sounds for advertising, branding, marketing, broadcast and film.

Investigators probing the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX jet eight days ago have found strong similarities in the 'angle of attack' data recorded by the doomed aircraft's cockpit recorder and data from a Lion Air jet of the same model that crashed in October, a person familiar with the matter said.

The identification of human remains from the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 is complete, the head of Ethiopia’s police said late on Monday, six months after the plane nosedived into farmland outside the capital Addis Ababa.

The investigation was “very challenging”, said Endeshaw Tassew, commissioner general of the Ethiopian Federal Police, in a statement broadcast on state television.

The Boeing 737-MAX slammed into the ground with such force that only fragments of those who died could be recovered.

Families heard the news that identification had been completed through the media. "Families were devastated because of this.

Almost all the old people, they took it very seriously. They are still in shock,” said Bayihe Demissie, who works with a committee formed by the families of Ethiopian victims.

“It took them back to all that pain. They (the airline) should have told us before they did anything. There should be a mechanism to discuss with families. All we need is for them to be gentle with us.”

Collecting and identifying the remains has been a fraught process. Families of those who perished complained of a lack of information about recovery efforts during which Ethiopian workers used metal aircraft parts to dig in the soil.

After initial sampling of the remains was done in Ethiopia, they were transferred to a laboratory run by UK-based Cellmark Forensic Services, which was contracted by the government, Endeshaw said.

Experts from another UK-based company, Blake Emergency Services, and from Interpol and the Ethiopian police were involved in preparing DNA samples and fingerprints.

Relatives of the crash victims found bones at the site as recently as July, Reuters reported last week.

Many relatives are pressing for the farmland where the plane crashed, about 60km (37 miles) east of the capital, to be turned into a permanent memorial.

A spokesman for Ethiopian Airlines was not immediately available for comment.
