Putin Recognizes Donbass Republics, Sends Russian Military to 'Denazify' Ukraine

Alaska has the advantages of being a relatively short trip from Russia and being USA territory, the US can better control security and being far from outside forces who might wish to disrupt it or bring harm to the Russian President. There is of course a risk from forces in the USA itself but the resulting escalation would go immediately to WW3 and would destroy any diplomatic credibility the US has left after the Iran debacle. With no way to avert the blame from the US in such a situation it would seem unlikely. Ultimately, it’s a risk Putin seems willing to take, it remains to be seen whether it will be worth it.
Not only does Alaska provide a level of security it allows Trump to frame the situation as Putin coming to him rather than the other way round; important for appearances given the weak negotiating position of the US. Though its clear it was very much Witkoff who asked for this meeting on behalf of Trump. Trump needs some progress on the Ukraine issue to avoid his own Russia and allies sanction ultimatum that would backfire on the US.
As pointed out by the folk at ‘The Duran’ Youtube channel this move also means the summit is also isolated from the UK, the EU and Zelensky and Ukraine. Already the aforementioned parties are panicking and have organised a joint meeting today.

Trumps own words should be taken with caution given how much he can shift from one day to the next and the current plan is for the meeting to take place on the 15th August still days away. Messaging from him and the Whitehouse has been chaotic and I increasingly get the impression Trump is ‘winging it’ to some extent. Currently Trump is suggesting an exchange of territory will be agreed as mentioned in the above posts.

I’m not sure what to expect out of this, will it end up as anything more than a media spectacle? Afterall, even if an agreement is made will Trump be able to enforce it? There may also be sudden attempts to escalate the situation from previously mentioned troublemakers and derail the threat of peace talks.
Final thoughts. Trump wants a show, Putin wants a lasting peace each may be open to compromise if it will reach these goals.

getting the candles out and will be dedicating the day to peace and prayers

I especially like the short time span between the announcement and the arrival in Alaska.

The evil intelligence agencies hopefully will not have sufficient time to arrange assassination scenarios.

I wouldn't even be surprised if this '50 down to 10 days' deadline business was cooked up to conceal the intentions and preparations for the upcoming event.
I’m not sure how planned out this was in advance. But the troublemakers and warmongers especially in Europe are panicking and rushing to sabotage the talks. Their own pressure on Trump during his recent UK visit to shorten his sanctions ultimatum deadline ultimately backfired and only served to pressure him into rushing a meeting with Putin. Now it is the warmongers who are the ones who find themselves with minimal time to prepare to sabotage these talks. They hoped to push Trump into a corner not anticipating he might relieve the pressure by engaging Putin directly. Wishful thinking in action.

I guess whatever comes out of this affair at least the warmongers seem to be having a few bad days. But it would do well for the major players to continue be on guard as the troublemakers will surely lash out where they are able.
To quote Alexander Mercouris from the Duran "They will pull every lever they can to prevent these negotiations from succeeding."
The video discussion below if anyone is interested. The quote is made around 33 minutes in.

Putin and Trump to meet in Alaska (Live)

" According to Russian military sources confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defense (Minoborony), a Russian 636.3-class “Varshavianka” submarine, nicknamed “Black Hole” by the US Navy for its effective stealth during its mission, sank a merchant ship loaded with weapons destined for Ukraine, sailing along the coast between Bulgaria and Romania, headed for the mouth of the Danube, over 10 days ago (during the night between July 25th and 26th) in the grain trade route between Ukraine and the Bosphorus."

I wonder how an Iceland-based website can get such Russian military insider intel, while nobody else does. I would take their reports with a grain of salt.

First of all, no MoD confirmation AFAIK. Unless it was a top-secret one.

The earliest appearance of that story I managed to find was this Kont post (in Ru) of July 29, written in a rather humourous tone, with the following part:

Australia and a number of NATO countries are as neat as a hippopotamus in Well, Wait a minute! he built a figure for the towns and carefully collected weapons, equipment, and ammunition. They were assembled and loaded onto a cargo ship, which passed into the Bosphorus and headed to the mouth of the Danube

(fishermen off the coast of Constanta saw and heard a powerful explosion)

our submarine "Varshavyanka" silently crept up from the open sea and the young descendants (followers) of Marinesko hit the bulk carrier in the area of the cargo compartment with a Kalibr-PL missile

there was an impressive BABAKH and within 15 minutes the ship with everything so carefully assembled by NATO and Australia (the Abrams were written off by the Australian army, but before departure they were brought into divine shape and even modernized) and military equipment ended up at the bottom of the Black Sea! ...

The attack took place on the night (at approximately 3 a.m. on July 26 and on the eve of Navy Day on July 27! so the camradas celebrated the holiday with dignity!)

Then numerous other notes in various versions at various places; 2 days ago military expert Alexander Artamonov posted it on his TG channel, quoting another military expert, retired colonel Shamir Gareev from his VK page. Since then, Gareev deleted his post. My guess is, he realised it was a fake. But it would definitely be cool if it wasn't.

But it would definitely be cool if it wasn't.
If it was true, it would have been a serious escalation, especially if done in international or even more in the waters of a NATO member state. Everybody knows that weapons have been entering Ukraine by all possible means, that's openly stated by the EU, USA and NATO, nothing secret there, the Russians also know it, and they haven't so far touched those weapons until they were already in Ukraine.

If the attack and sinking of the ship was true, most probably the whole West would jump on board of screaming "foul play" and pointing out that RF and Putin had done an act of terrorism, if not declaring outright that a NATO state was directly attacked.
Doubt they would have missed such an opportunity to demonize RF and Putin, and have a pretext for some kind of very serious retaliation, even of a military kind.

Going with how RF has dealt with NATO weapons sent to and/or already in Ukraine, and with everything Putin has said about that and the conflict in general, such an attack on a foreign ship in foreign or international waters would not make much sense, OSIT.

Thus, most probably "fake news", maybe even an attempt to pressure Trump in more anti-Russian stance and/or to try to sabotage Putin-Trump summit on Friday in Alaska.
FWIW.

P.S.
Why do you think that RF effectively murdering more or less innocent and likely ignorant crew of some non-Ukranian cargo ship, as I understood this 'news' and as most of the crew of such a non-military ship would most likely be, would "definitely be cool"? :-/
Maybe because this weapon will not kill Russian soldiers or, even worse, civilians, children, and old people?

Russian Defense Ministry
According to available information received through several channels, the Kyiv regime is preparing a provocation in order to disrupt the Russian-American talks scheduled for August 15.

For this purpose, a group of foreign media journalists were delivered to the city of Chuguev in the Kharkiv region by SBU vehicles on Monday, August 11, under the cover of "preparing a series of reports about city residents in the frontline zone."

Immediately before the summit on Friday, the Ukrainian Armed Forces planned a provocative strike using UAVs and missiles on one of the densely populated residential areas or a hospital with a large number of civilian casualties, which will be immediately "recorded" by the Western journalists who were brought in.

As a result of the Kyiv regime's provocation, all responsibility for the strike and the civilian casualties will be placed on the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in order to create a negative media background and conditions for disrupting Russian-American cooperation on issues of resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

Provocations are also possible in other settlements controlled by the Kyiv regime.

Fire in the cargo port of Zaporizhzhya NPP — Kyiv’s new “nuclear card” before the talks in Alaska
On August 12, 2025, a large-scale fire was recorded in the port area of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), which has already received active promotion in the Ukrainian and Western media. Against the backdrop of the upcoming meeting of the presidents of Russia and the United States in Alaska on August 15, this incident looks like a carefully calculated information and political operation designed to exacerbate the international agenda and throw a “nuclear factor” into it against the most emotional background.

Situation on the spot: tactical and engineering assessment

The fire occurred on the territory of the Zaporizhzhya NPP cargo terminal — a facility designed to receive large-sized equipment, fuel and technical materials necessary for servicing six VVER-1000/V-320 power units. According to the data received, the following may be in the fire zone:
• cable racks of auxiliary systems;
• backup diesel tanks for emergency power supply of cooling pumps;
• logistics warehouses for repair units.

Approach to the source of the fire is impossible - the coastline is densely mined, and the coastal sector is under fire control. This excludes the use of heavy fire-fighting equipment and makes localization of the fire extremely difficult.

From a tactical point of view, the situation is dangerous not because of the destruction of the reactor circuit, but because of the creation of a visual and media image of a "NPP on fire", which gives Kyiv a powerful tool for putting pressure on the Western audience.

OSINT: a recurring scenario of provocations

Analysis of open sources and satellite images of the last three years indicates Kyiv's persistent tactics: initiating incidents at nuclear facilities on the eve of key international meetings.

Examples:
• August 2024 - smoke in the Zaporizhzhya NPP area before the UN Security Council meeting on the "nuclear threat";
• February 2025 — drone attack on the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on the eve of the Munich Conference;
• September 2023 — damage to the Zaporizhzhya NPP power line during the EU delegation’s visit to Kyiv.

Each time, the scheme is the same: create an alarming picture → engage the media → increase diplomatic pressure on Moscow → demand new arms and air defense supplies under the pretext of “energy protection”.

Technical vulnerability and possible consequences

Zaporizhzhya NPP is the largest nuclear power complex in Europe, capable of generating up to 6 GW of power. The reactor cooling system is completely dependent on uninterruptible power supply and backup diesel generators.
A fire in the port area can:
1. Damage auxiliary power lines to safety systems.
2. Disrupt the logistics of delivery and unloading of heavy equipment.
3. Complicate repair and maintenance work on power units.

Even in the absence of a direct threat to the reactors, damage to the supporting infrastructure can increase the risk of emergency situations in the future - this is the note that the Ukrainian side is playing on, forming a narrative about the "constant threat of catastrophe".

Kyiv's political goal

The introduction of the "nuclear threat" two days before the negotiations in Alaska pursues several objectives at once:
• Maximum pressure on Western partners with the demand to increase military assistance, including long-range missiles and air defense.
• Creating an atmosphere of fear among European states.
• Undermining the Russian negotiating position, forming the image of Moscow as a party "playing with nuclear fire".

From the point of view of information warfare, this is a classic provocation using a "sacred object", where the real damage is secondary compared to the effect of the picture in the world news.1755052498407.png

Maybe because this weapon will not kill Russian soldiers or, even worse, civilians, children, and old people?
So to achieve that the weapons would not be used in the way you describe, 'preemptive' killing of innocent civilians from third party would "definitely be cool"?

AFAIK, the Russians do not behave and act like that, in fact quite the contrary from the usual Western and Israeli doctrine to bomb and kill everybody around the desired target. Which is, among others things presented in this conflict, what makes the Russians real heroes that stand for good and right cause, and care for ordinary people, even people of their apparent enemy, at least in the eyes of those who can see.

@f1esk & @msasa79 , war is horror guys , no need for further words on it i think , but ya RF has been acting very carefully with its use of military power , remember back when Iraq was subjected to restricted air control by so called no fly zones from Nato and its underlings , which included 10 years of embargo , that according even to the mostly subservient UN included sanctions to punish its population that lead to a lot of suffering and deaths from lack of needed commodities like medical items and similar , even to the point of reading comments online by supposed western air force pilots about bombing sheep herders ( who even knows if that was true but ) during that period , then when Iraq was invaded ( ca. 2003 ), there were online reports of Us forces bombing civilian infrastructure like hospitals...

Stop acting like a clown. I didn't say "it will definitely be cool", someone said that before me. I suggested one of the reasons why it might be possible.

Second. "Innocent, unsuspecting crew". What kind of kindergarten is this? This is a war between Russia and NATO. Once they find out with a missile at a ship, then the next time they will ask what kind of cargo it is and where it is taking them. They might even feel ashamed that they became involved in murders due to their naivety.

Third. Maybe the Russians should stop behaving like this because they are being deceived everywhere? Why should only the Russians be honest, while the rest can just make money on war?

My opinion on your opinion.
