Trump: US, allies strike Syria to stop chemical weapons

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States, France and Britain launched military strikes in Syria to punish President Bashar Assad for a suspected chemical attack against civilians and to deter him from doing it again, President Donald Trump announced Friday. Explosions lit up the skies over Damascus, the Syrian capital, as Trump spoke from the White House.

Syrian television reported that Syria's air defenses, which are substantial, have responded to the attack. After the attack ceased and the early morning skies went dark once more, vehicles with loudspeakers roamed the streets of Damascus blaring nationalist songs.

Trump said the U.S. is prepared to sustain pressure on Assad until he ends what the president called a criminal pattern of killing his own people with internationally banned chemical weapons. It was not immediately clear whether Trump meant the allied military operation would extend beyond an initial nighttime round of missile strikes.

"The evil and the despicable attack left mothers and fathers, infants and children, thrashing in pain and gasping for air. These are not the actions of a man; they are crimes of a monster instead," Trump said.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said in London that the West had tried "every possible" diplomatic means to stop Assad from using chemical weapons. "But our efforts have been repeatedly thwarted" by Syria and Russia, she said.

"So there is no practicable alternative to the use of force to degrade and deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime," May said. "This is not about intervening in a civil war. It is not about regime change."
French President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement that a target of the strike was the Syrian government's "clandestine chemical arsenal."

Trump did not provide details on the joint U.S.-British-French attack, but it was expected to include barrages of cruise missiles launched from outside Syrian airspace. He described the main aim as establishing "a strong deterrent" against chemical weapons use. The Syrian government has repeatedly denied any use of banned weapons.

The decision to strike, after days of deliberations, marked Trump's second order to attack Syria. He authorized a barrage of Tomahawk cruise missiles to hit a single Syrian airfield in April 2017 in retaliation for Assad's use of sarin gas against civilians.

At the Pentagon, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said the strike was "harder" on the Syrian regime than the 2017 strike and targeted "Syrian chemical weapons infrastructure." He described it as a "a one-time shot," adding, "I believe it has sent a very strong message."

Mattis said there were "no reports of losses" on the part of U.S. and allied forces participating in the strike, which included manned aircraft.

The air campaign could frustrate those in Trump's base who oppose military intervention and are wary of open-ended conflicts.
Trump chastised Syria's two main allies, Russia and Iran, for their roles in supporting "murderous dictators," and noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin had guaranteed a 2013 international agreement for Assad to get rid of all of his chemical weapons. He called on Moscow to change course and join the West in seeking a more responsible regime in Damascus.

Russia must decide if it will continue down this dark path, or if it will join with civilized nations as a force for stability and peace," Trump said. "Hopefully, someday we'll get along with Russia, and maybe even Iran — but maybe not."

The U.S. missile strike a year ago was meant to deter Assad from further use of chemical weapons. Since that did not work, a more intense attack would aim to degrade his ability to carry out further such attacks, and would try to do this by hitting Syrian aircraft, military depots and chemical facilities, among other things.

The strikes that hit early Saturday in Syria came hours before inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons were set to arrive to inspect the sight of the apparent attack.

The one-off missile strike in April 2017 targeted the airfield from which the Syrian aircraft had launched their gas attack. But the damage was limited, and a defiant Assad returned to episodic use of chlorine and perhaps other chemicals.

A broader question is whether the allied attacks are part of a revamped, coherent political strategy to end the war on terms that do not leave Assad in power.

Friday's strikes appear to signal Trump's willingness to draw the United States more deeply into the Syrian conflict. Just weeks ago, Trump said he wanted to end U.S. involvement in Syria and bring American troops home to focus on the homeland. The participation of British and French forces enables Trump to assert a wider international commitment against the use of chemical weapons, but the multi-pronged attack carries the risk of Russian retaliation.

In his nationwide address, Trump stressed that he has no interest in a longtime fight with Syria.
"As other nations step up their contributions, we look forward to the day when we can bring our warriors home," Trump said. "And great warriors they are."

The U.S. has about 2,000 troops on the ground in Syria as advisers to a makeshift group of anti-Islamic State fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces. They are in eastern Syria, far from Damascus. A U.S.-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes in Syria since
September 2014 as part of a largely successful effort to break the IS grip on both Syria and Iraq.

Jarrod Agen, Vice President Mike Pence's deputy chief of staff, said Pence called congressional leaders from his hotel suite in Lima, Peru, to notify them of the president's plan to address the nation about the Syrian air strikes.

Pence spoke to House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi before Trump's speech. Agen said Pence was unable to reach Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer before the speech but planned to speak to him after.

It's sickening.

Vanessa Beeley and Sarah Abdallah, who usually reports accurately as well, were saying that several locations have been hit, including residential areas. I'm still trying to find more reports on the ground. As Vanessa says, it's all unconfirmed yet, except the strikes and that some were intercepted by the Syrian Army.
Perhaps they are being cautious, enough with waking up while the city is being bombed ...

The Syrian authorities have not made any official statements on the total scale of the damages or casualties as a result of West's strikes yet.

At least 6 civilians have been injured as a result of a missile strike on a military depot to the west of Homs, a local security source told Sputnik. Also, SANA agency reported that at least three civilians were injured as a result of the western states' strike on a Syrian military facility in Homs.

According to Syria's Ministry of Information, Western media are exaggerating the scale of US, UK and French strikes against the targets in Syria.

"The Ministry of Information calls on citizens not to trust any media reports, which are deliberately or undeliberately exaggerating the number of targets and consequences of the trilateral aggression," the ministry said, as quoted by the Syrian State Television.
...

The broadcaster also refuted reports about nine targets, which were allegedly hit by the Western strikes.

While Damascus has not made any official statements on the total scale of the damages or casualties as a result of West's strikes yet, the Syrian state-run SANA news agency reported that missile strikes carried out by the UK, France and Britain on a research center in Damascus had only caused material damage.

"Several missiles of the three countries [the US, the UK and France], which struck a research facility have only caused material damage to a building, which includes an educational center and scientific labs," SANA reported.

https://www.rt.com/news/424102-un-charter-syria-strikes/ said:
All countries must heed UN Charter – Secretary-General after US-led Syria strike
Following airstrikes on Damascus, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that all countries are obliged to "act consistently" with the UN Charter, noting that the document is "very clear on these issues."

"There's an obligation, particularly when dealing with the matters of peace and security, to act consistently with the Charter of the United Nationals and with international law in general," Guterres said in a statement over the coordinated series of airstrikes by the US, the UK and France in Syria.
He went on to stress that the UN Security Council, of which the three countries are permanent members, "has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security."

Guterres called on all the UN members to “unite” to deter further escalation that might aggravate the suffering that the Syrian people have endured during the conflict.
“I urge all Member States to show restraint in these dangerous circumstances and to avoid any acts that could escalate the situation,” he said.
...famous last words?

Definitely shocking that they went that way, on the other hand it is also not surprising.

The majority of rockets fired in Syria by the UK, US, and France were intercepted by Syrian air defense systems, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
The warplanes and vessels of the US and its allies launched over 100 cruise missiles and air-surface missiles on Syrian civil and military facilities, the ministry stated.

Hopefully they could intercept the most vulnerable targets, that means civilian targets. And it would be interesting to know how many rockets arrived at all.

As I read somewhere on Facebook, it could be a high possibility that they wanted to destroy the evidence of the supposed chemical attack - which didn't happen of course, beside evidence of other western involvement.

Syrian army arrests British and other Western forces embedded with terrorist groups in Eastern Ghouta - Local reports

From a comment of a recent Sott article:

What we're seeing in Syria with last year's US strike and now this latest one tonight, is a new kind of hybrid information-fantasy war where the US can declare itself as the dominant player in the region. Everything from the fake chemical attack, to the ratcheting up of war-fear, to this impotent attack on three warehouses cleared of all personnel is a guise of power. The US wants to maintain its image in the world as the top dog, but all it can do at this point is wag the dog.

The Syrian Arab Army reports (from their FB page):

This is an initial post-battle assessment, it is as accurate as we can make it however subject to change as more of the "Fog of war" clears.

~100+ Long-range cruise missiles were fired at targets in Syria, most of the intended targets were in Damascus countryside and one in Homs' countryside.

From the ~100 missiles less than 10 reached any of their targets, our numbers suggest 7; one hit a civilian neighborhood in Damascus where some office buildings of the Syrian Military were located, also a warehouse in Damascus countryside was hit, and an ex-Syrian military site that was abandoned over 5 years ago was also hit.

In Homs, the missile was not destroyed mid-air but was jammed and it did not reach its target, it landed 10km from its intended target according to our intel (which is again subject to change to a certain extent)

Furthermore, at least 2 small sized drones were destroyed as they attempted to enter and assess the aftermath of the US strike.
We all await the official statement but this is as close as it gets to the facts, although we are not an official page but who follow us for years know how much we are very confident of our sources

Finally, the interception, and all the actions were carried by the Syrian Air Defenses; with all do respect, appreciation and acknowledgment of the Syrian Allies; we are not denying their efforts, and their contributions to Syria's security and stability, we are simply sharing facts.

Well, 7-10 missiles that reached the target (out of ~100) is much less effective that previous similar attack (23 missiles that hit the target out of 59) and I hope that no people were killed. What these idiots probably don't realise is that with each such attack both Syrian and Russian army gather precious data about the missiles and the tactics of the attack which help them to improve their own tactics and render all the future similar missile attack of the "coalition" even less effective.

Diplomat: Strikes against Syria come right when country got a chance for peace

The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman has commented on overnight strikes against Syria
MOSCOW

The United States and its allies delivered a military strike against Syria precisely at the moment when the country received a chance for a peaceful future, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Facebook.

"Those behind it lay claim to moral leadership in this world and declare their exclusiveness and uniqueness," she said.
"In fact, it takes a very peculiar kind of uniqueness to attack Syria’s capital at a time when the country has received a chance for peace at last".

"The White House says its certainty about a chemical attack by Damascus relies on the media, on reports about symptoms, videos and photos, and also on credible information." she said. "After that statement the US and all other Western media should be aware of their responsibility for what has happened. Fifteen years ago the White House used a test tube and its secretary of state. Now Washington has used the media instead of the test tube."

Attack on Syria launched to upset OPCW probe in Ghouta, says Russian lawmaker

The politicial is certain that the attack was launched "especially for upsetting an impartial investigation of the alleged chemical attack"

DAMASCUS, TASS
The US-led coalition dealt a strike on Syria with the aim to upset the investigation of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in Eastern Ghouta, the coordinator of the State Duma’s group for relations with the Syrian parliament, Dmitry Sablin, told the media on Saturday. Sablin is currently in Damascus with a Russian delegation.

"That the strike against Syria was delivered on the day when the OPCW mission was to get down to work indicates that nobody cares about the truth. Just as it was the case with alleged Iraqi WMD, it was just a pretext,"

Sablin said. He is certain that the attack was launched "especially for upsetting an impartial investigation of the alleged chemical attack in Eastern Ghouta."

"We’ve been able to see for ourselves that Homs province, devastated by the Islamic State (outlawed in Russia) and other terrorists, has begun to restore itself. In the meantime, so-called Western humanists bring more death and destruction," he said.

Sablin advised "the Western adventurists who have unleashed aggression in the Middle East again to turn an attentive ear to the warning from the chief of Russia’s General Staff Valery Gerasimov such aggression would not remain unretaliated."

The delegation Sablin leads arrived in Damascus on Friday. Before, it visited Homs and Palmyra.

MOSCOW,TASS
The missile strike carried out by the US, Britain and France has been thwarted by Syria’s S-125, S-200, Buk and Kvadrat air defense systems manufactured in the USSR, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on Saturday.

"Syrian air defense systems S-125, S-200, Buk and Kvadrat were involved in the operation to thwart the missile strike. These air defense systems were manufactured in the Soviet Union more than 30 years ago," the ministry said.

The US, the UK and France have fired more than 100 cruise and air-to-surface missiles at military and civilian targets in Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.
"
"Over 100 cruise and air-to-surface missiles have been fired at military and civilian targets in Syria by US, British and French ships," the ministry said.

PR Event Or Failure? Syrian General Command Reports Only Minor Damage As Result Of US-led Strikes
Snip:
The Syrian state-run news agency SANA reports (source):
The General Command announced that a tripartite aggression was carried out at 03:55 a.m. (at local time) by the US, Britain and France through firing 110 missiles towards Syrian targets in Damascus and outside it.
It added that the Syrian Air Defense systems confronted, with high competence, the missiles of the aggression and shot down most of them, meanwhile, some of the missiles hit one of the buildings of the Research Center in Barzzeh in Damascus, which includes an educational center and scientific laboratories, asserting that the damages were limited to material ones.
Other missiles were forced to deviate from their tracks while they were targeting a military position near Homs as their explosions caused the injury of three civilians.
The General command stressed its determination in defending Syria and protecting its citizens, reiterating that such aggression will not affect the Syrian armed forces to continue hunting the remnant of armed terrorist gatherings across Syria.

They would have to pick "Friday the 13th" for this bombing assault!

According to the head of the Pentagon, this bombing was a "one-time strike" and the main targets were three main chemical weapons-related sites, as well as one command center, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

Would it be too far-fetched to suggest that the targets, that the U.S. - U.K. and France are trying to blow up, are in fact, locations where they (themselves) supplied chemicals to their proxy terrorist groups? The Syrian Army have been reporting "finding large caches of chemical weapons and bomb making equipment" left behind by the terrorist.

Are the U.S./U.K./France targeting their own chemical supply arsenals - that they provided to the terrorist? The reason - the bombing is only considered, "a "one-time strike"? The strikes had to happen before OCPW specialists reached Douma on Saturday and confirmed the information by Russian specialists ... that no chemical weapons attack has happened in Syria.

US DoD: US, UK, French Strikes Aimed At 'Chemical Research Infrastructure'

The operation, which started at 9 p.m. EST, was "specifically associated" with chemical research facilities and chemical storage sites, US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joe Dunford said Friday.

The was a "one-time strike," the head of the Pentagon said. The full operation was completed in less than 60 minutes.

Three main chemical weapons-related sites were targeted, as well as one command center, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

Continued air strikes will not take place, unless Assad uses chemical weapons again, Mattis told reporters.

These targets were decided on with the goal of minimizing impact on Russian forces and civilians, according to JCS.

The deconfliction line with Russia was "active" this week, Dunford noted. US Central Command followed normal protocols when communicating across the deconfliction channel with Russia for clearing the airspace, JCS said.

"This wave of strikes is over," Dunford emphasized. When asked how many missiles were intercepted, Dunford said simply, "I don't know," before stating that US Central Command would have more details over the weekend. The Syrian Arab News Agency reported that air defense systems intercepted 20 missiles.

The United States does not know about any Russian defense systems engaged in airstrikes on Syria, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford told reports.

"I am not aware of any Russian activity," Dunford said.

I'm will to bet that "FUKUS" (France, UK, US) are now going to pat the themselves on the back and tell everyone how 'succesful' the operation was. As if. They spent millions of dollars on missiles to target 'suspected chemical depots'. Most of them shot down. The ones that did reach their targets, appeared to have done minimal damage. The other part of the story is that the targets were intended to destroy any evidence of the previous attacks that when the OPCW goes to investigate, they won't find anything. Could be, but it doesn't look like they targeted those areas specifically. Although it might be that the intended effect is interfere with the process. Also interesting it comes right on the heels of Russia having 'irrefutable proof' of the UKs involvement in staging the attacks.

In other words, the whole escapade was mostly theatrics. Very expensive theatrics. It's not going over well with their base either.

Sputnik reports no fatalities

In another report, 71 of the 103 missiles intercepted.

Statement from Putin:

"Russia strongly condemns the attack on Syria where Russian servicemen are helping the legitimate government in the war on terrorism,"

"By its actions, the United States is increasingly exacerbating the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria and bringing sufferings to civilians and actually conniving at terrorists who have been tormenting the Syrian people for seven years and provoking a new wave of refugees from that country and the region as a whole,"

And I thought this tidbit was interesting, although no source given to confirm the report:

Was this a response by Russia, saying that's enough? And the was the intent to lob missiles all night long instead of for a couple of hours?

Yes, and all of them were intercepted by the "ancient" Soviet-made missiles:

Syria intercepted many of 100+ missiles launched at its civilian, military objects – Russia

To repel the attack, Damascus deployed Soviet-made surface-to-air missile systems, including S-125 (NATO reporting name: SA-3 Goa), S-200 (SA-5 Gammon), 2K12 Kub (SA-6 Gainful) and Buk.

Russia did not deploy its air defense systems located in Syria to intercept the American, British, and French missiles.

They shoot again themselves in the foot without probably even realizing it.

In another report, 71 of the 103 missiles intercepted.

That means they lost in total about 59.904.000 $, when taking just one cruise missile as an example and one missile is about 832.000 $ each. And all the rockets they shot are worth about 85.696.000 $. Many people could have been helped with that "silvester money".

Eisenhower Was Right: The Military-Industrial Complex Poses A Real Threat

Summary
The warning was not heeded.
The result has been wasteful wars with death and destruction.
It has also resulted in a very healthy military industry with attractive investment opportunities.

In the 20th and 21st Centuries, the US has been at war far more than any other nation. And recently, US wars appear to be increasingly unfocused and unproductive. Back in 1961, Eisenhower warned about the growing power of the military-industrial complex. I quote at length from his speech given on January 17, 1961, three days before he left office:
My fellow Americans:
We now stand ten years past the midpoint of a century that has witnessed four major wars among great nations. Three of these involved our own country. Despite these holocausts America is today the strongest, the most influential and most productive nation in the world. Understandably proud of this pre-eminence, we yet realize that America's leadership and prestige depend, not merely upon our unmatched material progress, riches and military strength, but on how we use our power in the interests of world peace and human betterment.

Crises there will continue to be. In meeting them, whether foreign or domestic, great or small, there is a recurring temptation to feel that some spectacular and costly action could become the miraculous solution to all current difficulties….

The record of many decades stands as proof that our people and their government have, in the main, understood these truths and have responded to them well, in the face of stress and threat. But threats, new in kind or degree, constantly arise. Our military organization today bears little relation to that known by any of my predecessors in peacetime, or indeed by the fighting men of World War II or Korea…. we have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions. Added to this, three and a half million men and women are directly engaged in the defense establishment.

That means they lost in total about 59.904.000 $, when taking just one cruise missile as an example and one missile is about 832.000 $ each. And all the rockets they shot are worth about 85.696.000 $. Many people could have been helped with that "silvester money".

I think that's part of the reason why so many people are turned off by the idea of getting involved in foreign interventions. well any new ones - the ones already ongoing have somewhat slipped into obscurity but this is new, and the reasons for it are not particularly compelling to the public. Even more so with the declining economy in the US. If there was going to be something major, I think they would create a major false flag in the US or UK in a major city in order to get popular support behind it. Then again that might be giving them too much credit.

From Skripal To Syria: The Empire's "New Realities" Are Reaching The End Of The Road
by Tyler Durden Sat, 04/14/2018 - 03:00 (Bold Authors Emphasis)
Authored by Rob Slane via TheBlogMire.com,
That’s not the way the world really works anymore. We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality.
And while you’re studying that reality - judiciously, as you will - we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out.
We’re history’s actors … and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.

- Karl Rove, Deputy Chief of Staff in the Government of George W. Bush.

I do wish people would study Rove’s words more carefully. Judiciously study them. If they did, then whenever the next alleged atrocity occurs and the United States, together with its coalition of supine vassals, starts yelling and hollering 10 minutes later for action to be taken, on the basis of a test-tube full of washing powder, or pictures of injured women and children in a war zone, and the entire media of dutiful stenographers shrieks that “something must be done”, then perhaps we might pause and wonder if we are being played. Instead of falling into an emotional spasm, maybe we would instead reject the deafening drumbeats of war – wars that have a habit of killing immeasurably more women and children than the alleged incidents on which they are based, by the way — and ask ourselves whether “Rove’s Law” has come into play.

For-Money-Fish-1stOct2017-850x720.jpg

As an aside, the West’s interventionist wars remind me of that wonderfully cynical exchange in the film, The Man With Two Brains:
Number one: We – that is the Globalist Deep State, centred in Washington DC – are sovereign over the entire globe and we will do as we please.
Number two: That we don’t follow reality, we create it.
Number three: That we are prepared to do things that will make your jaws drop, your hair stand on end, and your eyes boggle as you wonder what is going on, and while your jaws, your hair and your eyes are busy doing their thing, we will have moved onto create our next reality.
In other words – we are God – and not a kind and merciful God, but a God who lords it over all peoples’, nations and tongues, who tells lies, and then tells more lies to cover up those lies and – when you poor saps are trying to work out what it is we’re really up to – before you know what has happened, those lies and those lies to cover up lies will have become the new reality. We’ll have moved on and the world with it, and the narrative we have created will have been written in the history books, which we ourselves shall write.

The cases of Sergei Skripal and the alleged chemical attack in Eastern Ghouta seem somehow to represent the zenith of this ideology.

But you see what I’ve done? I’ve fallen right into Karl Rove’s trap, haven’t I? I’m asking questions about whether the narratives in these cases stack up. In the Skripal case, I’ve been judiciously studying reality by asking lots of questions that ought to have occurred to anyone with a keen interest in arriving at the truth (here and here, for instance). I could do the same with the Syrian case, if I had the time.

Yet while I’m doing so, the narrative is moving on. I’m falling into exactly the trap that Karl and his disciples have laid. They want two sorts of people: those who just blindly accept that it was the Russians wot did it, or that it was Assad wot did it; and those who spend their time asking questions about the official explanations. The first group call the second group conspiracy theorists and nutters. The second group call the first group dumb sheeple. And the Globalist Deep State laughs and laughs and laughs as the two groups battle it out to make sense of what has happened, leaving it free to march on to create the next reality. Truly I tell you, these Bolsheviks have learnt their Hegelian Dialectics well.

Now, this is not to rule out that in the Salisbury and Eastern Ghouta cases the official narratives might – just might – be the correct ones. That both Vladimir Putin and Bashar Assad might be the Laurel and Hardy of Geopolitics. Yet it has to be said that whatever else you think about them, neither of them tends to come across in interviews as being what you might call dumb or inept. Nor do either of them give the impression that they have sudden insane impulses to do things which have absolutely no benefit to them, but which hand their enemies massive PR victories.

But this is besides the point. The point is not whether these particular incidents are what the official narrative says they are, or whether they are provocations. It suffices for the “new reality creators” to create their realities on occasion, or perhaps to distort occurrences which they didn’t create, and before you know it you have your two groups battling over events which may be real or fake: the conspiracists – who are studying every event to try to work out the details and the inconsistencies – and the sheeple – who believe that their Government is full of good hearted, white hatted chaps and lasses who would never, ever do anything bad – unlike those orcs over in Mordor.

Rove and Co have basically created a “reality” where truth is no longer discernible, where assertions of guilt are taken as fact, and where holes in these kinds of incidents only serve to divide the people further, so that the Globalist Deep State can move on to create their next reality.

But let’s not get gloomy.

The good news is that although they clearly think they can get away with it indefinitely, they can’t. No kingdom or empire built on a mountain of lies can stand indefinitely. They all fall. And can’t you start to sense the signs that the empire’s “new realities” – or what are known as lies in laymen’s terms – are reaching boiling point? Don’t you sense that they have just got too confident and in doing so have begun to get careless? They are making mistakes. And as they do, they are having to resort to bigger and bigger lies to cover up the ones they’ve already told.

Sadly for Rove and Co, but happily for the rest of us, the world doesn’t actually work the way they think it does. Reality - I mean real reality, rather than the phoney reality they have created - will catch up sooner or later. I sense that it’s on its way even now. And when it finally comes, the whole rotten edifice that these “history’s actors” have tried to create will crash and burn. Bringing much rejoicing.

The cases of Sergei Skripal and the alleged chemical attack in Eastern Ghouta seem somehow to represent the zenith of this ideology.

I do not know who poisoned Sergei Skripal or for what reason. It could be that the Russian Government was behind it, although this would mean accepting the highly improbable thesis that they decided to target a has-been MI6 spy, who they released from prison eight years ago, using perhaps the dumbest assassination method in the history of the world – an ineffective, slow-operating, “military-grade” nerve agent, which could be traced back to them, and which they smeared on a door handle in rainy Salisbury –, a week or so before a Presidential election, and less than 100 days before they are due to host the World Cup. In other words, the official narrative does not rest on accepting that the Russian state is the epitome of pure evil; it rests on accepting that it is the epitome of insanity and bumbling incompetence.

I do not know what happened in Eastern Ghouta. It could be that the Syrian Government was behind what is alleged to have happened (if it indeed did happen), but this would mean having to accept the thesis that just 24 hours away from completely liberating the last pocket of resistance in Damascus, after the US, the UK and France had all warned that they would attack if chemical weapons were used, just a week or so after the US President, Donald J. Swamp, announced that the US would be pulling out of Syria (which they occupied illegally, by the way), they made the decision to use a weapon that gave them no military advantage whatsoever, but which was practically guaranteed to be used as a pretext for airstrikes against them. In other words, like the Skripal case, the theory does not stand on accepting that the Syrian state is the epitome of pure evil; it stands on accepting that it is the epitome of self-defeating stupidity on an epic scale.
