Russia Begins Operations in Syria: End Game for the US Empire?

Russians invaded Serbia!

Actually, it was an anti NATO demonstration because we signed an agreement with NATO that they can do whatever they want in our country. https://www.rt.com/news/333142-serbia-nato-immunity-protest/

And guess what happened just couple days after? USA killed two of ours embassy workers in Lybia who were kidnaped in November last year. That is how NATO says thanks.

2 Serbian embassy staff kidnapped by ISIS killed in US bombing in Libya

Two Serbian embassy staff abducted in Libya were killed on Friday during a US airstrike on a suspected Islamic State training camp, Belgrade has confirmed. Their deaths came just as ransom negotiations had got underway with the kidnappers.

Embassy communications chief Sladjana Stankovic and her driver Jovica Stepic were killed by a US bomb targeting the camp in Sabratha, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic told journalists on Saturday.

“We demanded explanations from the US about whether they knew that foreigners were present at the site. They said they didn’t,” Vucic said.

He offered condolences to the friends and loved ones of the two Serbs, and said their deaths made it a sad and difficult day for the country.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said that the Serbian authorities had been negotiating the release of the two abductees.

"The kidnappers had a financial interest," Dacic said.

Sladjana Stankovic and Jovica Stepic were abducted in the northwestern coastal city of Sabratha on November 8, 2015, when their car was hijacked by gunmen after becoming separated from a convoy carrying Serbia’s ambassador to Libya.

The Friday airstrike carried out by the US in western Libya reportedly killed more than 40 people. The Pentagon said the strike was targeting Noureddine Chouchane, the Tunisian suspected of masterminding the deadly attack on the Bardo Museum in Tunis in March, 2015.

While the US claimed the bombing was a major success, it has also found itself on shaky legal ground, as the strike may have been carried out without any legal justification.

The circumstances of the two Serbs’ alleged deaths are reminiscent of those of Italian Giovanni Lo Porto and American Warren Weinstein, who were killed by an alleged US drone strike on a Taliban compound in January, 2015.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova offered deep condolences to the families of Sladjana Stankovic and Jovica Stepic, and urged the US and NATO to be more responsible in choosing their targets.

“We urge the US and other NATO countries to choose targets responsibly and carefully, like Russian air forces do in Syria. This is not the first time NATO strikes have resulted in the killing of innocent people. There is no doubt that when carrying out such operations the US and its allies have to follow international law, and not act unilaterally, but coordinate their steps with all the necessary members of international community.”

This dam is just one of many, so the corridor that encompasses edges of Syria, Iraq and Turkey (with its oil too), is of importance. The Turks have paid out $30 something billion for the GAP Dam systems, and the water spigot has always been in their control over its downstream users. There is a whole bunch of complicated historical lens that can be applied and modern time endgames that I don't know where they are headed. Anyway, just keeping the water question on the burner for possible updates.

Yeah, the water issue is certainly as big as the oil/gas issue. Particularly Israel has had it's eye on the Litani River in Lebanon, for example, for a long time, as well as water resources in the region beyond Palestine in general. In the "Eretz Israel" land-grab desire, water plays no small part. FWIW.

Twin Explosions in Homs, Syria Kill 46, Wound 110
http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160221/1035119735/syria-homs-explosions.html

According to a member of staff of the city’s central hospital, at least 46 people were killed and over 110 injured as double blasts hit the Syrian city of Homs.

BEIRUT (Sputnik) – The death toll of double explosions in the Syrian city of Homs has risen to 46, while over 110 people have been hospitalized, a member of staff of the city’s central hospital said Sunday.

"Another 20 bodies of victims were brought to the hospital, the number of casualties stands at 46, 115 are injured," the hospital employee told RIA Novosti.

According to the police, the extremists parked their cars opposite each other at a crossroads. The law enforcers believe that the explosions were supposed to be carried out separately to attract large crowds, but the first blast triggered the second.

US inaction led to Russian interference in Syria, claims former NATO commander
https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/news/americas/24044-us-inaction-led-to-russian-interference-in-syria-claims-former-nato-commander

The former military head of NATO, US General Wesley Clark, said on Friday that Washington’s inaction despite Bashar Al-Assad’s use of chemical weapons has led to Russian interference in Syria, Anadolu has reported. Now retired, Clark made his comments during an event organised by the faculty of law at the University of California, Los Angeles. The programme title was, “Mutual Turkish-NATO and Russian relations in the light of the Syrian crisis.”

“The state of the conflict and continuous instability in the region gave Russia an opportunity to achieve its goals to be present in the Middle East, sell Russian weapons and IT, and to regain global leadership in the region,” Clark told the audience. He pointed out the changes in the Middle East since the ouster of Saddam Hussein in Iraq and the emergence of Turkey as a power in the region.

Speaking at the same event, Turkey’s Consul-General in California, Raefa Izaz, said that her country has exerted a lot of effort to achieve peace and stability in the region through its “active role” in NATO. “Turkey advised the Syrian regime to carry out elections before the start of the crisis,” she said, “but it preferred to use force instead. Hence, it lost its legitimacy.”

American academic Professor Daniel Treisman said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had used propaganda against Turkey in the wake of downing the Russian fighter jet last year when it violated Turkish airspace. Treisman expressed his fears of a potential escalation between Turkey and Russia, noting that if Russia advances towards the Turkish border by controlling Aleppo, the government in Ankara will respond with a military offensive within Syria. “This will aggravate the situation,” he added.

Saudi Arabia to supply Syrian opposition with SAMs
https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/news/middle-east/24046-saudi-arabia-to-supply-syrian-opposition-with-sams

Saudi Arabia announced on Friday that it is planning to supply the moderate Syrian opposition with surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), AlKhaleej.com has reported. Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir made the announcement during an interview with the Germany weekly Der Spiegel; his comments were then reported widely by other media outlets.

“We believe that introducing surface-to-air missiles in Syria is going to change the balance of power on the ground,” he told Der Spiegel. “It will allow the moderate opposition groups to neutralise the helicopters and aircraft that are dropping chemicals and have been carpet-bombing them.” He noted that something similar happened previously in Afghanistan.

Al-Jubeir repeated his calls for Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad “to step down in order to enable a political solution to the five-year-long war.” He suggested that Russian interference does not help the Assad regime in the long term.

Missing radioactive material (device) found in south Iraq: Officials
http://217.218.67.231/Detail/2016/02/21/451549/Iraq--Zubair-Basra--Jabbar-alSaidi-SGS-CWAs

“Highly dangerous” radioactive material (device) that had gone missing last year in Iraq has been found dumped near a petrol station in the country’s south, officials say.

The chief of the security panel in Basra provincial council, Jabbar al-Saidi, said on Sunday that the material was found by a passer-by in the southern town of Zubair, which is located around 15 km (9 miles) southwest of Basra.

“A passer-by found the radioactive device dumped in Zubair and immediately informed security forces which went with a special prevention radiation team and retrieved the device,” Saidi said. “After initial checking I can confirm the device is intact 100 percent and there is absolutely no concern of radiation.”

Meanwhile, Ameer Ali, Iraqi’s Environment Ministry spokesman, also confirmed that the material, stored in a protective case the size of a laptop computer, was undamaged.

However, it was not immediately clear how the material ended up in Zubair.

The discovery has ended speculation that the material was acquired by the Takfiri Daesh militant group.

The material, used to test oil pipes, had gone missing from a storage facility near the southern Iraqi city of Basra. It reportedly contained up to ten grams of Iridium-192 capsules. It was part of a device used to test welded portions of pipes for leaks or other weaknesses.

The material is classed as a Category 2 radioactive source by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). If not managed properly, it could be fatal to those exposed to it for a period of hours to days.

Syrian Army Liberates East Aleppo; ISIS on the Run (Maps)
http://russia-insider.com/en/syrian-army-clears-east-aleppo-isis-run/ri12978

According to breaking reports, ISIS was boiled alive in the East Aleppo cauldron. Hundreds of ISIS fighters apparently fled the area, leaving less than 200 to defend the thermal power plant, which is now under full SAA control. ISIS is now on the run:

The Syrian Arab Army’s “Tiger Forces” and their allies have officially captured every village inside the Al-Safira Plains today after a very long battle at the Aleppo Thermal Power Plant this past week.

According to a battlefield correspondent at the Kuweires Military Airport, sappers from the Syrian Arab Army’s engineering corps are now clearing the IEDs placed by the terrorists from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) before they fled the area.

The source added that some 700 ISIL terrorists fled the Al-Safira Plains this past week, leaving only 100-150 fighters left to control the Thermal Power. However, those terrorists were unable to hold on for very long, thanks in large part to the Tiger Forces, who surrounded the entire facility while also seizing the Aleppo-Raqqa Highway.

A map of the SAA's gains:

The SAA has "now built a buffer on three sides of Aleppo: the Deir Hafer plains to the east, Hadar and the surrounding areas to the South, and the recently captured corridor to Nubl/Zahraa in the North. This would suggest that the final stage of this operation is going to be to secure the villages to the west of Aleppo, probably with an upward thrust from Khan Tuman. If that is concluded successfully, then the SAA will have essentially captured Aleppo; all that will remain is convincing the rebels to withdraw from the three towns along the international highway from Turkey to Aleppo." Here's a visual of the Aleppo region:

ISIS is now in serious trouble:

With the loss of the Al-Safira Plains to the Syrian Armed Forces, ISIL will now have to double-up their efforts to protect their strongholds of Al-Bab and Deir Hafer; these two cities have long been under the control of the terrorist group and if they were to lose them, they would be in serious trouble.

Meanwhile, southeast of Aleppo, the Syrian Armed Forces are pushing northeast to the Tabaqa Military Airport; it is very likely that the Tiger Forces push to Deir Hafer and then southeast to the Jirah Military Airport to eventually flank the ISIL.

According to Russian military reports, ISIS and other militant groups are fleeing Aleppo in the hopes of making it across the border to Turkey.

A Furious Turkey Says US Is "Acting Like An Enemy," Demands Washington Brand Kurds "Terrorists"
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-02-20/furious-turkey-says-us-acting-enemy-demands-washington-brand-kurds-terrorists

As you might have noticed, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is about to lose his mind with the situation in Syria.

To be sure, the effort to usurp the Bashar al-Assad government wasn’t exactly going as planned in the first place. Regime change always takes time, but the conflict in Syria was dragging into its fifth year by the time the Russians got directly involved and although it did indeed look as though the SAA was on the verge of defeat, the future of the rebellion was far from certain.

But to whatever extent the rebels’ fate was up in the air before September 30, the cause was dealt a devastating blow when Moscow’s warplanes began flying sorties from Latakia and while Ankara and Riyadh were initially willing to sit on the sidelines and see how things played out, once Russia and Hezbollah encircled Aleppo, it was do or die time. The supply lines to Turkey were cut and without a direct intervention by the rebels’ Sunni benefactors, Moscow and Hassan Nasrallah’s army would ultimately move in on Aleppo proper and that, as they say, would be that.

The problem for Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar is optics. That is everything anyone does in Syria has to be justified by an imaginary “war on terror.” Turkey can’t say it’s intervening to keep the rebels from being defeated by the Russians, and similarly, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the US, France and everyone else needs to preserve the narrative and pretend as though this all doesn't boil down to the West and the Sunnis versus the Russians and the Shiites.

Here’s what we said earlier this month: somehow, Turkey and Saudi Arabia need to figure out how to spin an attack on the YPG and an effort to rescue the opposition at Aleppo as an anti-ISIS operation even though ISIS doesn’t have a large presence in the area.

Well it turns out that’s an impossible task and so, Turkey has resorted to Plan B: a possible false flag bombing and the old “blame the Kurds” strategy.

The attack on military personnel in Ankara this week was claimed by The Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (an offshoot of the PKK) in retaliation for Turkey's aggressive campaign in Cizre (as documented here), but Erdogan has taken the opportunity to remind the world that the PKK and the YPG are largely synonymous. That is, they're both armed groups of non-state actors and if one is a terrorist organization, then so is the other.

Erdogan's anti-Kurd stance is complicated immeasurably by the fact that both the US and Russia support the YPG out of sheer necessity. The group has proven especially adept at battling ISIS and has secured most of the border with Turkey. As we noted way back in August, it was inevtiable that Washington and Ankara would come to blows over the YPG. After all, the US only secured access to Incirlik by acquiescing to Erdogan's crackdown on the PKK, but some of the missions the US was flying from Turkey's air base were in support of the YPG. The whole thing was absurd from the very beginning.

Well now, Turkey is not only set to use the fight against the YPG as an excuse to intervene in Syria on behalf of the Sunni rebels battling to beat back the Russian and Iranian advance, but Ankara is also demanding that the US recognize the YPG as a terrorist group. If Washington refuses, "measure will be taken."

"If the Unites States is really Turkey's friend and ally, then they should recognize the PYD — a Syrian branch of the PKK — as a terrorist organization. If a friend acts as an enemy, then measures should be taken, and they will not be limited to the Incirlik Airbase, Turkey has significant capabilities," Erdogan advisor Seref Malkoc told Bugun newspaper.

So yeah. Turkey just threatened the US. It's notable that Malkoc specifically said actions would go "beyond Incirlik," because pulling access to the base would be the first thing any regional observers would expect from Ankara in the event of a spat with Washington. For Turkey to say that measures will go beyond that, opens the door for Erdogan to become openly hostile towards his NATO allies.

"The only thing we expect from our U.S. ally is to support Turkey with no ifs or buts," PM Ahmet Davutoglu told a news conferenceon Saturday."If 28 Turkish lives have been claimed through a terrorist attack we can only expect them to say any threat against Turkey is a threat against them."

In other words, Turkey is explicitly asking the US to support Ankara's push to invade Syria and not only that, Erdogan wants Washington to sanction attacks on the YPG which the US has overtly armed, trained, and funded. "The disagreement over the YPG risks driving a wedge between the NATO allies at a critical point in Syria's civil war," Reuters wrote on Saturday. "On Friday, a State Department spokesman told reporters Washington would continue to support organizations in Syria that it could count on in the fight against Islamic State - an apparent reference to the YPG."

Right. "Washington will continue to support organizations in Syria that it can count on in the fight against Islamic State." So we suppose that means the US will support Russia. And Iran. And Hezbollah. But most certainly not Turkey, who is the biggest state sponsor of the Islamic State on the face of the planet.

During the last couple of months, there have been reports that Kiev is slowly amassing machinery and soldiers close to the separatist areas. In the latest SOTT radio show, someone shared a link in the chatroom of a local Donbass news-site. Having had a quick look, I found a couple of short articles published today that seem to indicate that they are indeed gathering forces and carrying out works as if in preparation for an attack.

Yashchenko: AFU preparing beachhead for the offensive blow onto LPR

The Kiev military are taking advantage of the temporary truce for preparation for the full-scale military operations in Donbass. It was stated today by the Deputy Chief of the LPR People’s Militia Corps Colonel Igor Yashchenko.

According to our intelligence, near the locality of Luganskoye the AFU are carrying out works on the engineering equipment of their positions with heavy machinery.

According to Yashchenko, in these conditions the People’s Militia pays special attention to the issues of the Republic’s safety.

These facts don't let us weaken vigilance and insistence, paying special attention to the Republic’s safety issues. Augmenting efforts on its protection is one of the fundamental tasks of the People’s Militia.

Earlier it was reported that over the last 24 hours the Ukrainian military had launched more than 90 shells onto the territory of the Lugansk People's Republic resulting from 4 violations of the ceasefire.

AFU plan large-scale attacks on DPR on the eve of February 23
The Ukrainian forces plan massive attacks on the territory of DPR overnight into February 23.

According to our reconnaissance, the AFU overnight into February 23, on the eve of Day of the Defender of the Fatherland are preparing for the large provocations on the entire line of contact in Donetsk direction that may lead into a large-scale military operation, Vice-commander of the DPR Defense Ministry Eduard Basurin.

For the last week in a zone of the conflict up to 35 artillery guns, 47 armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles, 19 tanks, 77 cars with personnel, 30 units of MRLS 'Uragan', 13 units of MRLS 'Grad', 5 units of self-propelled artillery systems, 60 members of the 'Right Sector' and sniper units from among the foreign mercenaries were detected in the directions of Gorlovka, Donetsk and Mariupol.

This information suggests an idea that the Ukrainian forces are preparing a large-scale offensive. But the DPR Army is in a constant combat readiness and is able to protect the region.
They have plenty of other military tools that they can use, which do not destroy the environment and kill so much innocent people, as a nuclear weapon does.
Not that many against a full-blown invasion I believe. The nuclear option is always the last one. But there are other options for being heavily outnumbered. They have thermobaric bombs which can produce blasts and aftershocks as powerful as a nuclear blast. Only the Russians have it in stock. It’s considered an alternative to a tactical nuclear weapon. It does not produce chemical or radioactive fallout.

The coming days, weeks will tell us more, the battle of Aleppo is of such importance that Erdogan has to act soon. Going nuclear or not. I think its safe to say that all options are on the table. The 4 + 1 coalition cannot lose. Whoever intervenes, they better believe that the nuclear threat is real. They might just keep their distance. I hope.

Yes. And that is the true meaning of deterrence.

Being thoughtful strategists, I believe Putin and his team have worked this through.

If the hypothetical invasion were to take place, then the invaders ought to realize all bets are off. And the battle field will likely not be restricted to the Turkey-Syria border only. Everything (of military & industrial value) inside both Turkey and Saudi Arabia becomes fair game. And that I think -- is effective deterrence.

My guess is this message (or something similar) has been given. And those on the receiving end are indeed fearful.

They know Putin is a man of his word. And one without fear or hesitation.

This is pure speculation on my part. I could be very very wrong.

Israel Comes Clean: Sunni Extremists in Syria Are 'in Our Camp' (Video)
http://russia-insider.com/en/politics/israel-comes-clean-sunni-extremists-syria-are-our-camp/ri12979

Israel doesn't bother to hide the fact that it's rooting for the 'moderate' rebels in Syria.

We couldn't help but chuckle when we read in today's Haaretz about Israel's "changing approach" to the Syrian war, now that Assad and his allies are routing the foreign-backed fanatics that have been terrorizing Syria for the last five years.

To quote directly from the article: "Russian intervention has tilted the scales, and Jerusalem is concerned of a regime victory, which would be victory for Iran as well. To prevent that, Israeli officials believe [the] West must intervene in favor of moderate rebels."

Thanks for volunteering the west, Israel. But the real eye-opening line comes later in this thinly-veiled appeal for more military aid to head-chopping lunatics in Syria:

But three understandings are emerging as Israel updates its positions in light of developments: First, an Assad victory would be bad for Israel because it would also mean victory for Assad’s allies, Iran and Hezbollah. Second, despite the heavy Russian bombings and internal disagreements in its ranks, the Syrian opposition is far from vanquished. The third is that the West must rouse itself from its inaction and try to send real military aid to what Israeli security officials describe as a kind of third force, the less extreme Sunni rebels
and the Kurdish militias, so they, too, will stand up against the regime as well as against the Islamic State.

Yes, the "less extreme" Sunni rebels. They're currently holed up in Aleppo with the Easter Bunny.

Of course, none of this is new. Back in December, Israel's minister of defense didn't hide who Israel supported in Syria. Watch him come out and say it (starts at the 12:00 mark):

_https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL7Buyk0zzg - Published on Dec 9, 2015

"It appears to me, that we, Israel, are on the same page as this [Sunni] camp".

And let's not forget Moshe Ya’alon's other famous statement: "In Syria, ISIS is preferable to Iran".

We're so glad that the "only Democracy in the Middle East" is on the right side of history, again.

Battle for Al-Safira Plains in East Aleppo is Over
http://southfront.org/battle-for-al-safira-plains-in-east-aleppo-is-over/

Based on Al-Masdar, SAA Reporter and other reports.

Early in the morning, Tiger Forces entered and imposed full control over the villages of Jubb al-Safa, Kabarah, Rayyan, Al-Halabiyah, Dakwanah, Tall Istabl, Ain Sabil and Tall Riman.

Yesterday, government forces finally managed to capture the strategic Aleppo Thermal Power Plant from ISIS fighters. This vital piece of infrastructure could very well enable a more steady stream of electricity to the people of Aleppo city in the months to come.

About 700 ISIL terrorists fled the Al-Safira Plains this past week, leaving only 100-150 fighters left to control the Thermal Power.

I truly believe Putin shifted the time line.

And the C's have confirmed such a shift. (Along with the contribution this group had made, unbelievable as it may seem.)

It shows that world events are not simply the dictates of evil alone. (The mosaic takes everything into account.) Had Putin and Russia not acted, the consequences for Syria would have been dire. Another Libya ... or something much much worse.

A clear recognition and acknowledgement of this shift is important I think -- for going forward. It can help focus our minds & our efforts, in a direction most conducive for better outcomes. It matters, even in the smallest way.

I could be wrong.
