Smoking: Where can we buy/get Organic Tobacco (for SOTT members)?

Hi thest0rm, and welcome to the forum

we would appreciate it if you would post a brief intro about yourself in the Newbies section, telling us how you found this forum, how long you've been reading it and/or the SOTT page, whether or not you've read any of Laura's books yet, etc. :)

Where do you find the baccy grower? Do you have a link?

BTW one thing about the uppowoc.com link is that email does not seem to work. I wish it did because I wanted to ask some questions.
I looked for Baccy Grower's site today and couldn't find it. I bought from him over a year ago, so maybe he got out of the business. I'll do some more searching.

I searched my inbox and it turns out I bought it off Amazon and he was a vendor there but no more it seems.

Same as baccygrower from amazon.com Only the Kentucky Burley is organic, but you also have to write to him to make sure he'll include only the organic variety.

I ordered it.

Yep, that's the site. Thanks for finding it.

I ordered shamanic tobacco from botanicalspirit.com as well as bouncingbeatbotanicals to compare. Herbalfire.com had some pretty good stuff as well, I ordered it a while ago.

The shamanic tobacco (rustica) from herbalfire.com was too strong though to be smoked on it's own. I'm thinking it's because it was fermented like cigar tobacco is, which makes it really really alkaline.

Do you mean too strong in flavor or too strong in nicotine? Rustica has the highest nicotine levels. If too strong in flavor, you're probably right. I've smoked some Rustica from India that was pretty smooth. Too much nicotine to finish one in a single sitting, though.

It was too strong in flavor, Strongly alkalizing. You know, when tobacco has that spicy flavor? Well this was spicy as heck.

And I dont think that spiciness has to do with the nicotine. It may have more to do with the nitrosamides, or other substances that are present in higher amounts after being fermented. Like spicy clove type of flavor.

The other question is, it it worth $15.99/lb
plus shipping, plus whatever 'processing' costs includes?

That's where I'm getting my tobacco and I'm in Québec (Canada). They are based in Ohio.

So far I am entirely satisfied with the product and also with the customer service. They ship sealed bags with the unprocessed leaves inside (they are simply cured). They come at perfect humidity for smoking right away (although it might depend on your taste).

No processing costs or anything. I just pay for the tobacco (no tax of course), shipping and I have no custom taxes to pay (for 2 lbs orders).

Don Carey (the owner) is a great guy and he even gave me 1/2 lb of free tobacco since my first order had taken a while to get here. But since then, I only use USPS priority so it takes only 4-5 days and I get a tracking number.

They also have a ''sampler pack'' which includes 1/2 lb of 7 types of cigarette tobacco they offer ($34.99 for 3.5 lbs in total).

Great stuff! :cool2:

Hummm, what exactly do you mean by ''it's the only organic one''?

I know that the kind you talk about is air cured compared to the others. Is that what you mean? And is there something I should be aware of in regards to the other cured tobaccos? That's what I smoke.

Thanks.

Organic means grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Air cured is just a method of curing, like flue curing or fire curing. Both organic and non organic can be cured in all the different ways.

I think with tobacco, the pesticide issue is more dangerous for the farmer than the user. Most pesticides they use are degraded by the time you smoke it, since it is usually aged a long time before you buy it. You can look up the half life of pesticides on the internet. There is an issue with non-organic phosphate fertilizers having some radioactivity.

I also have a lot of tobacco from wholeleaftobacco.com and am happy with it. Great service like you said.

Alright. Thanks for the answer.

What confuses me is thest0rm's statement that *only* the Kentucky Burley is organic. So far, they seem to only grow different varieties and use different curing methods. I can't see why the others would be ''non-organic''. Perhaps he was talking about the one from Amazon.

I think what's going on with that other vendor, the one with .net instead of .com is that he grew some organic Burley in 2011 and then decided to sell other people's leaf off his website.
