Smoking: Where can we buy/get Organic Tobacco (for SOTT members)?

Hi everyone,

I received the tobacco from Uppowoc. It came very moist and smelled wonderful. The burley is pretty harsh. I used Mr. Premise's suggestions to mellow it some. I sprayed the leaves with a distilled water and honey mixture, dried it in the oven, then resprayed it. I left the leaves damp in a ziploc for a few days. The water and honey mellowed it out a lot when I smoked it while a bit moist. Once the moisture leaves the tobacco, the harshness returns. I am going to experiment with it some more, maybe mix it with some American Spirit. All in I all, it's a big too harsh for me. I think it's Burley tobacco. :cool2:

Ahh I couldn't have read this sooner! I received a half a pound sampler pack from leaf only (dark air cured and burley uncut) and I tried the dark leaf straight out of the package. It was like smoking a cactus and very spicy in my mouth. I didn't even attempt inhalation. And I enjoy the harsh american spirit brand.

I'll prob. spray them down tonight and put them in the stove for an hour or so at 200°F. Definitely realizing that tobacco is a science not something you can't commit to. Love it lol.

P.s. on leafonly they purport that air cured leafs retain the most nicotine with the least amount of sugar (higher nicotine is what i'm going for). I think that would make sense if the heat from other methods disspates or degrades the nicotine content. More research is needed on my part but has anyone been able to tell the difference just from smoking differently cured tobacco

You don't need to toast the tobacco for an hour. Just until dry, maybe 15 minutes. And you can turn the tobacco over with a spatula half way through. It will end up smoother if you mix a teaspoon of honey in the water you spray on it, also.

The Dark Air Cured is a variety that has more nicotine. Burley is also air cured so it's not the curing method that causes differences in nicotine. You will notice the difference in nicotine levels if you try pure Dark Air Cured. Especially if you get the 3rd Priming one from WholeLeafTobacco. 3rd Priming is the top leaves on the plant.

Ahh I see thanks for the insight. I'll take a look at the whole leaf tobacco site as well

There is a all natural organic brand of cigarettes/tobacco in Canada called CNT and they have a roll your own version in natural and organic. Not sure where you would get it locally

:welcome: Bacchusrogue to our forum! Actually, seeing as this is your first post on the forum, we would appreciate it if you would post a brief intro about yourself in the Newbies section, telling us how you found this forum, how long you've been reading it and/or the SOTT page, whether or not you've read any of Laura's books yet, etc.

I just found this... thought it might be useful...

Whole leaf tobacco:

Organic Canadian Virginia Flue Cured
Organic American Virginia Flue Cured
Organic Burley (currently out of stock)

Can be found here:

https://www.leafonly.com/pipe-tobacco-leaf/organic-tobacco-leaf

just ordered the 1/4 lb sample of the first two to check them out.

I have been smoking the Organic Canadian and Organic US flu cured from Leafonly, mixed 50/50. It is a wonderful smoke and very similar to American Spirit organic. Much cheaper and in my opinion, better!

I ran across another source for tobacco in the U.S. It's a perique blend and the site says their product is close to organic. I haven't tried it yet, but plan on ordering some in the next week. The 16oz bags run about $2.40 per ounce which is pretty cheap compared to American Spirit tobacco.

I like this blend. I just ordered the Canadian/American 50-50 because they were out of Organic Burley,. The 50-50 is a very nice blend, IMO.

I was browsing another forum and found this:

"While it is true, pipe tobacco is being cut to sell this way (as RYO tobacco), I have not found any that is air cured, only flue cured. This introduces chemicals from the heat, which differentiates it from the European stuff that I so loved........and so did my lungs.

I am going to give this some serious consideration with the availability of the air cured, aged Burleys, might just have solved a problem I had been having enjoying on of my few remaining sinful pleasures.

BTW, if you want to be shocked, check out the data regarding the health issues of flue cured versus air cured tobaccos...... And then ask yourself why Europe does not allow the sale of flue cured and America does."

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8422296

And then when I did 'check out the data', I only found this, which is a study suggesting flue cured (Blonde) is more linked with cancer than air cured (Black).

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8422296

Anyone have any other interesting insights on this?
