SOTT Radio Network HAS MOVED!

Thank you for the nice show and quality of sound I heard is markedly clear. I had some issue with my setup while calling the show. I will have to try another time.

Hi Scottie, Data, Joe, Niall,

Given the WebRTC underpinnings of the new service it probably makes sense to put a disclaimer at radio.sot.net as far as which platforms are supported right now.

From my own experiences this morning:
- Safari browser (Mac & iOS): didn't seem to work.

WebRTC implementation support on those platforms seems to be lacking and/or weak according to poking around on the web.

- Chrome (Mac): no problems

- Opera (Mac): mostly working although I think they may have been a problem with connecting chat but I didn't look into it further after I moved to Chrome to listen to the show

Would it make sense to set up a test page somewhere for the purpose of trying out different browsers and platforms?
Let me know how I can help.

Perhaps somebody that listed on an Android phone can chime in on how things worked out?

Dominique

Great show and the call in function sounded great!!!

It would be nice to get back the link for the live playlist to use in winamp,VLC, other media players.

The page won't load on my older phone which as an ancient crappy browser, probably due to using javascript.

An ability to resize or open the chat in a separate window would be helpful!!

If you want to have a normal call in function by landline, you can use a VOIP service, like VOIPO or what not. They give you a number anywhere in North America (you pick the area code) and you can listen by using a voip adapter or software on the PC (which can be tied to your sound system for the show!). The cost is very cheap, I recall 10 dollars a month for 2 lines when I did it years ago. VOIP is picky with internet quality though, so Scottie would have to give that port or device the absolute highest priority in QOS on the router.

Very excited that you have moved to a more stable platform. Congratulations! I have been searching for the pod of the newest show and can't seem to find it. I can see the page where the show is listed on the new network, but no link or button to listen to or download the show. Does anyone have a direct link to the show of the 21st?
Many thanks.

We just posted the show on Sott!

Thanks to all for the feedback! I admit that I had some stagefright, even though I was not ON the show! :O But it turned out to be a very good result! :D

It won't load on Internet Explorer Kasia.

Simply use a proper browser like Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome! :)

Great job. It looks and sounds great!

Will the new SOTT Radio Network eventually work/load on Internet Explorer?

Or should I download the Google Chrome browser? I ask because Internet Explorer is all I have ever used for my browser and I am not that computer savvy.

I went to the Google Chrome web page and had a look. It seems to be a simple enough download, but not sure.

Don't want to miss out on the weekly shows! :)

Thanks.

We're gonna slowly-but-surely get everything sorted out.

The main task Data's been working on is just getting everything working, with call screening, call-ins, streaming stuff, hardware, switching our radio machine to linux, reinstalling everything, testing the whole setup again, etc. Lots of testing. It's been a huge learning process, and quite an adventure!

At the moment, there isn't even a way for Niall or Joe to post a new show... It's all done kind of manually since it's still in the "experimental" or "beta" stage. So, this coming week will be the "integration stage" where the 2 systems (main SOTT and radio.sott.net) will start to really talk to each other. Once that's sorted, we'll have all shows on SOTT with our own player, RSS feeds, playlists, etc.

Anyway, I would say maybe in a few weeks, things should be all sorted. But that just means that each week, everyone can look forward to more improvements! :D

Super job Data, and Scottie! Not only was the sound quality amazing but the bandwidth cost seemed to be much lower, bitrate sorcery :wizard:

Thank you so much for that link, Data!! I did programming etc for years so I know how much testing needs to be done to make sure all aspects function together seamlessly. In fact, the programming is the easier of the tasks... the real mastery is in the testing protocols. Bravo to the entire team for pulling this off so professionally. It is very impressive - what has been done at SOTT.
Would love to be able to interact with the radio shows but living in Australia means that I am asleep while the 'modern' world is awake and working!! I VERY much enjoy all the broadcasts... informing and reassuring. Reassuring in that we know we are not alone with our thoughts and observations. So much of mankind is asleep at the switch.
Thanks to you and team for what you do. XO

No. :)

To explain a bit:

Our live radio page (radio.sott.net) is exclusively aimed at users of recent versions of the browsers Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome on the platforms Windows, Mac OSX and Linux (that are 87.1% of all users as of Dec 2015 according to W3C statistics). This is because these browsers have successfully implemented the most recent standards as published by the W3C, and our radio setup would simply not be possible without them. For programmers it's like: One cannot do excavator work with a lawn mower. This comparison may seem like a stretch for ordinary users of the web, but web developers will know that it is true. Other browsers will probably not be supported until they catch up to the official modern standards as published by the W3C, and that may take time.

If someone used a recent version of Firefox or Chrome and still had a problem, it may be that you have some security plugin running in your browser. These plugins may interfere in various unpredictable ways that we cannot fix without tripling our code size and time investment (and nerve tear ;)). If in doubt, for Sott.net you can disable all these security plugins -- Scottie and I work hard to make web applications that do no evil or funny stuff. :halo:

And for the call-in feature: you need a microphone attached to your computer that is recognized and activated -- but that's no different from using Skype for example. Once you click on the "Speak with the Host" button, your browser should display a box asking for permission to use your microphone, and you have to select the right one from the list.

However, we will make an effort to test the live streaming on mobile devices (we haven't done that yet due to time constraints). We cannot promise anything yet; it may be that our solution for some mobile devices is: use the VLC media player app from your app store (it's free and open source).

In any case: We'll add more user messages and fallbacks to make it clear what works and what doesn't.

For all other cases: All the shows will be downloadable as regular .mp3 and .ogg files from www.sott.net that you can put directly on your mp3 player to listen to when you go for a walk, or commute to work. Today's show is here on Sott.net. Here is the OGG. And here is the MP3. We'll also add these links to the shows listed on radio.sott.net that have already ended.

So, next week, we'll have more good stuff! :D

Thanks for the great news and good work Data & Scottie :) :bacon: - definitely going to check out the new show in the new setup !

That is related to microphone connection.
