Telesio Galilei Academy of Science a Fraud?

So how did we get the price up so high? It was through "stock supporters" - someone with an interest in the shares who would put out press releases and buy a few thousand shares. By spending perhaps £300, they would double the share price - if one person bought and no one sold, the value soared. Clients were never encouraged to sell; after all, we wanted to flog shares we'd bought from the promoters at a big discount to our asking price.

And that, I believe, is the way that Fucilla and his companies work, and it the reason that, for many of them, this Bruno Denantes person and others 'buy' a large stake in the company.

It is also one of the clearest examples of ponerization I've ever seen up-close and personal.

I have been thinking about this whole situation quite a bit. What it really boils down to is that we are trying to save people we care about from assured future disaster, protect science/scientists in general by sounding a warning, and all we are getting is a attacked by people we are trying to help.

The problem is, we certainly did not expect to find what we have found about Fucilla... we figured what would be uncovered was just a bunch of fringe science - embarrassing enough, of course. To find what seems like a massive, years long history of fraud and con-artistry just wasn't anticipated. And the fact is, once the genie is out of the bottle, you can't put it back. We have a larger responsibility to the public in general, to warn them about predators and how they behave and how they construct their scams. We can't just delete all this stuff (as is being demanded not only by Fucilla, but by various individuals he has sent to do his pressurizing on us) and act like we never saw it! And gads, we do know what is coming for all those affiliated scientists...

It's just sickening.

But, anyway, the dynamic is described quite accurately in Lobaczewski's book, "Political Ponerology":

One phenomenon all ponerogenic groups and associations have in common is the fact that their members lose (or have already lost) the capacity to perceive pathological individuals as such, interpreting their behavior in a fascinated, heroic, or melodramatic way. The opinions, ideas, and judgments of people carrying various psychological deficits are endowed with an importance at least equal to that of outstanding individuals among normal people. The atrophy of natural critical faculties with respect to pathological individuals becomes an opening to their activities, and, at the same time, a criterion for recognizing the association in concern as ponerogenic. Let us call this the first criterion of ponerogenesis.

Another phenomenon all ponerogenic associations have in common is their statistically high concentration of individuals with various psychological anomalies. ...

It is a common phenomenon for a ponerogenic association or group to contain a particular ideology which always justifies its activities and furnishes certain propaganda motives. Even a small-time gang of hoodlums has its own melodramatic ideology and pathological romanticism. Human nature demands that vile matters be haloed by an over-compensatory mystique in order to silence one’s conscience and to deceive consciousness and critical faculties, whether one’s own or those of others.

If such an ponerogenic union could be stripped of its ideology, nothing would remain except psychological and moral pathology, naked and unattractive. Such stripping would of course provoke “moral outrage”, and not only among the members of the union; even normal people, who condemn this kind of union along with its ideologies, would feel hurt, deprived of something constituting part of their own romanticism, their way of perceiving reality. Perhaps even some of the readers of this book will resent the author’s stripping evil so unceremoniously of all its literary motifs. The job of effecting such a “strip-tease” may thus turn out to be much more difficult and dangerous than expected. ...

An ideology of a secondarily ponerogenic association is formed by gradual adaptation of the primary ideology to functions and goals other than the original formative ones. A certain kind of layering or schizophrenia of ideology takes place during the ponerization process. The outer layer closest to the original content is used for the group’s propaganda purposes, especially regarding the outside world, although it can in part also be used inside with regard to disbelieving lower-echelon members. The second layer presents the elite with no problems of comprehension: it is more hermetic, generally composed by slipping a different meaning into the same names. Since identical names signify different contents depending on the layer in question, understanding this “doubletalk” requires simultaneous fluency in both languages.

Average people succumb to the first layer’s suggestive insinuations for a long time before they learn to understand the second one as well. Anyone with certain psychological deviations, especially if he is wearing the mask of normality with which we are already familiar, immediately perceives the second layer to be attractive and significant; after all, it was built by people like him. Comprehending this doubletalk is therefore a vexatious task, provoking quite understandable psychological resistance; this very duality of language, however, is a pathognomonic symptom indicating that the human union in question is touched by the ponerogenic process to an advanced degree.

The ideology of unions affected by such degeneration has certain constant factors regardless of their quality, quantity, or scope of action: namely, the motivations of a wronged group, radical righting of the wrong, and the higher value of the individuals who have joined the organization. These motivations facilitate sublimation of the feeling of being wronged and different, caused by one’s own psychological failings, and appear to liberate the individual from the need to abide by uncomfortable moral principles.

In the world full of real injustice and human humiliation, making it conducive to the formation of an ideology containing the above elements, a union of its converts may easily succumb to degradation. At this time those people with a tendency to accept the better version of the ideology shall also long tend to justify such ideological duality. ...

For future reference, let us remember: ideologies do not need spellbinders. Spellbinders need ideologies in order to subject them to their own deviant goals. ...

Any human group affected by the process described herein is characterized by its increasing regression as regards natural common sense and the ability to perceive psychological reality. Someone treating this in traditional categories could consider it an instance of “turning into half-wittedness” or the growing of intellectual deficiencies and moral failings. A ponerological analysis of this process, however, indicates that pressure is applied upon the more normal part of the association by pathological factors in the person of their carriers.

Thus, whenever we observe some group member being treated with no critical distance, although he betrays one of the psychological anomalies familiar to us, and his opinions being treated as at least equal to those of normal people, although they are based on a characteristically different view of human matters, we must derive the conclusion that this human group is affected by ponerogenic process.

Then, there was something I read on FB this morning, quoted by someone else, that struck me as a propos:

"There is a hurricane a-blowing and just by knowing what you know, you have an advantage to the blind morons that surround you everyday. However not everyone can be saved. Ancient proverb: Don't bother telling the TRUTH to your friend because he already knows and don't bother telling the TRUTH to your enemy because he won't believe you. Civilize those you can and f*ck the rest.

There are too many people in this world. It is not our responsibility to be constantly cleaning up after the weak-minded. Nature will eventually run its course and those too stupid to live will fortunately be crushed beneath the wheels of our progress. Assume your individuality. Culture can rob you of your uniqueness. That's how stereotypes exist and not without reason. Anyone too wrapped up in the sheep mentality of their ethnicity can never truly express themselves as individuals. READ, Watch, LISTEN, DO what you want. BUT BE WARNED! You cannot have this freedom at no cost. You must pay in responsibility... Laws bind us. But it is important to remember the law is only what is popular. Not whats right or wrong." ~Marilyn Manson

By this criterion: Don't bother telling the TRUTH to your friend because he already knows and don't bother telling the TRUTH to your enemy because he won't believe you... I think we can assume that when you tell the truth to someone who claims to be your friend and he does not believe you then he never was your friend to begin with.

I passed by the address that Bruno Denantes has for his companies the other day. The address is 173 rue Charenton, 75012 Paris. It turned out to be a big housing estate and not of the more affluent one, housing probable 1000+ people. No obvious signs of any business residing there, so it might just be the address of the secretarial service that manages his businesses.

What is also residing at that address is the UNESCO Club, which does not suggest anything but it was the only sign that stood out apart from the estate number 173.

Ummmm... I have a little problem with this "testamentary evidence" - assuming it to even be true. The problem is that Fucilla is saying that, for 7 years there have been no dividends, that this guy keeps pouring money in and getting nothing, all the while he is trying to pump up investors by promising incredible finds and dividends?

Is it just me?

Yup, if I was a shareholder/investor, I'd be pretty worried by that!

Is that even legal in the US, if the company has so much (alleged) profit, not to pay share holder dividends? Even when companies are being shut down to start new ones???

It is a round robin. Penny stock companies to not have to file financials, so there is no proof one way or the other for us or the shareholders to know unless they write a press release ( ha) or get 3rd party audited financials and post them
( haha). The only way to know is to take his word.

Again, not same rules as a corp listed on a major exchange. With seven years worth of funding they would have the tenure and financials to get listed on a major exchange so I call B.S.

Indeed! I have spent a couple of days trying to dig deeper into this using the research tools in my trading platform. Only one of the companies that I can find is traded publicly in the US, GDT TEK, trading symbol GDTK, a loosely regulated OTC pink sheets stock, but that was enough to get into their SEC filings.

GDT TEK, through a series of strange morphs transformed itself from a supplier of pizza crusts, to wi fi provider and finally to GDT TEK:

GDT TEK, INC., mission is to employ Green Technologies (clean technologies) to produce Renewable and Sustainable Energy for a cleaner planet while conserving the Earth's natural environment. Our cost effective Green Energy Technologies will efficiently help to curb the negative impacts of humans on the Earth for our generation and generations to come...
_http://www.gdttek.com/

If you can wade through the SEC filings you can see the weird mission twists and habitually late quarterly filings this company has taken in its convoluted history through its SEC filings beginning in 1996. Throughout all of its incarnations is the name of Albert R. Reda at the helm... who has always extracted a handsome salary for his services. Also note, if you start with the 1996 filings and work your way forward, the changes of localities as the company reinvents itself, Phoenix-like from the ashes of its predecessors.

http://sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0000880584&type=&dateb=&owner=exclude&start=0&count=40

The one thing in common with all of these serial enterprises is that none seem to have ever done anything but go broke. Many disgruntled investors here:

If anyone can come up with trading symbols for the UK listed companies, We can see if they are traded on any US exchanges. If they are, they have SEC filings. These are very revealing.

Edit: Here is the GDT TEK Board of Directors... all the usual suspects:

Turbocean Jan, 19 2012: WO 2012/007686

This patent is credited to Bruno Denantes as being the inventor but it is owned by Turbocean SAS in Dunquerque. Is this an invention that he has bought like Fucelli's patent and to what extent is he involved with this company? My point is , why would an industrialist with so many companies and who invest money in so many companies not register his "own invention" in one of his own companies. Unless Turbocean SAS is also financed by Bruno de Nantes?

I am amazed how few (just 2 at the time of writing) people who are on the Telesio Galiley Academy of Science's website as members, who have distanced themselves from the institute given what has been revealed here in the past week. To their defense it can be said that they might not have read the thread yet, but if they have and haven't distanced themselves, then their careers are seriously in jeopardy. Perhaps it would be an idea to contact them all by mail/email, so as least they have a chance to distance themselves and save their careers. If that was done, it would be hard later for them to claim no knowledge about this scam that they unwittingly/wittingly have added their name to.

Then there is Bruno Denantes, who is aware of the thread as he has dictated a letter to be posted here on the forum, stating that he is fully behind Mr Fucilla. That is appears to have been written down by a half-witted person as a secretary does not add to the respect for Mr. Denantes. If he is bona fide, then he better distance himself ASAP from all his relationships with Mr. Fucilla as the more he waits the more rope he is been given to hang himself.

Mr. Waldyr Alves Rodrigues wrote to Ark that he would distance himself from Mr. Fucilla if the claims proves to be true. How much evidence does such a sharp mind as Rodrigues need in order to put 2 and 2 together? Or perhaps the mind has atrophied by wrongful associations?

Not sure what became of this story, but in 2007 the Swiss newspaper Blick reported the following about Orlando Del Don, psychiatrist in Bellinzona (apologies for the bad Google translation, I tried to fix it a little bit):

_http://www.blick.ch/news/svp-vizepraesident-del-don-unter-betrugsverdacht-id142702.html

LUGANO. The Ticino prosecutor has opened investigations against psychiatrist Orlando Del Don of Bellinzona. The Vice President of the Ticino SVP and National candidate is accused of fraud in the health insurance.

The SVP, however, assumes that Del Don is innocent and is sticking to his candidacy for the National Party president Pierre Rusconi said on Tuesday upon request.

Del Don has announced party internally to resign his political office, if his position were to deteriorate with the judiciary, as he said on Tuesday upon request.

The psychiatrist believes to have been unfairly denigrated by the former director of a clinic in Lugano, who has been in custody since the end of August. What he's exactly charged with, Del Don doesn't know.

Raid on the clinic

His situation had not changed since the raid at the clinic by the end of August, said the SVP politician. At that time the prosecutor had communicated, that there would be no suspicion against Del Don.

Confrontation is imminent

Why is it the SVP politician who has always been described as innocent, has now been targeted is not known. Attorney General Bruno Balestra was not available for a statement on Tuesday.

Del Don reported that he will soon confront the former director of the hospital. He expects to be able to invalidate all suspicions. From the files which had been confiscated, it would become apparent that he had nothing to do with the matter.

The office is investigating a total of four people. They are suspected of having cheated the health insurance companies to 40000-50000 francs. They should have charged for treatments that were never rendered. (SDA)

From the pictures in the article and on LiUM's website, it looks like it's the same Orlando Del Don who's now LiUM's president. SVP is the Swiss People's Party.

The Swiss People's Party is a right-wing populist party. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_People's_Party

Francesco Fucilla has been complaining because we stopped publishing his emails on the Telesio Galilei thread. (He actually thinks people will read them and believe him!) We only did so because it was distracting from the flow of information coming in. But I don't want him to feel censored in any way so I'm going to try to gather the endless flow of emails together and post them here in his own thread, just to make sure that we all feel warm and cozy here. Apologies if the following’s hard to follow, understand or is confusing. I bolded and set “( )” around my statements, the rest are "quotes" of what I believe to be Slander and Libel:

The following I believe are slanderous statements about someone(s) collecting information that can be had publicly.

"Chicken Brain", "these 2 lobotomised dawn", "The 2 autistic criminals wrote on their criminal website", "BONNIE AND CLYDE" (opinion of this poster to somehow be a reference to Laura and Ark)

"Autistic", "AUTISTIC STYLE", “the most idiotic and pathetic autistic criminals” “autistic mad dog”

Calling the publicly found data shared as being “slanderous crap” Implying said ‘publicly shared data’ is “criminal damage

Threats: “STOP IMMEDIATELY OR THAT THEY WOULD PAY SEVERE CONSEQUENCES”, (Threats of) “Police investigation”

I WILL NOW GET MY FRENCH GROUP OF FINANCIER REPRESENTED BY DR BRUNO DENANTES.. TO ISSUE A PUBLIC STATEMENT FOR THE FRENCH POLICE (Denantes speaks for the French Police now?)

In reference to a TGA medal: “A MONKEY (BUT NOT BONNIE AND CLYDE) CAN WORK OUT THAT THERE IS A MOTIVATION FOR THE 2 TO DO SUCH CRIMINAL ACTS” (again a reference to Laura & Ark? Who, according to the poster are not as smart as a Monkey.)

“.the authorities aware of how dangerous for society the POLISH couple are ..........

“gurus of a sect” (A reference directly attacking the FOTCM?)
“reptilian DNA”, “VOID any any logics”, “Mr Ark has exactly the reptilian DNA sequence of nucleotides”, “he belongs to a lab and dissected for research in evolutionary inversions traits” This list goes on for awhile. “Clown”, “Spastic”, “AUTISTIC CLYDE”, “Little Monkey” (references made toward Ark I believe)
“Autistic web” (Not sure but it appears to be a reference to cassiopaea.org, sott.net, QFG etc.. again, unsure.)

Diatribe on a scientific debate: “I WILL TEACH YOU A LESSON YOU WILL NEVER FORGET !!",I SEND YOU BACK TO KINDERGARTEN DRAWING PICTURES OF LITTLE PIGS !!” (which includes the idea that persons collecting public data are attempting) “extortion and blackmail.”

More Chicken Brain references (a direct attack on Laura and Ark as being fowl (bird) brained. Also makes mention of specific area in which they live and near what city.)
Call Laura and Ark a: “Fraud” "they are a fraud" (- is stated)
Call website(s): “Criminal Website”

Some interesting snippets from Babiak and Hare's "Snakes in Suits: When Psychopaths Go to Work".
Irresponsibility, chronic pathological lying, lack of remorse even when exposed in a lie or deceit are some of the key characteristics that mark a psychopath in addition to their most notable feature of lack of empathy.
If challenged or caught in a lie, psychopaths are not embarrassed. They simply change or elaborate on the story line to weave together all the misarranged details into a believable fabric. Well practiced oral communication skills make this endless stream of disinformation seem believable, sensible and logical.
This bit about career is interesting
Psychopaths typically do not have practicable long-term career or life goals. Thus, a series of unconnected, randomly selected jobs defines their work history. Despite the lack of a real career, psychopaths will claim all sorts of goals and achievements, and weave a career "history" so convincing that others believe the success, fortune and achievement they profess to have attained in their lives. In the business world, these fictitious achievements are memorialized in a resume filled with lies, self-generated letters of commendation, and even fake wall plaques and awards.
....................
Psychopaths don't share the same work ethic as most other workers, who typically believe in an honest day's work for an honest day's pay, who take pride in doing a good job, and who value long-term employment. It is difficult to imagine that a psychopath would work diligently from 9 to 5 in the hope of becoming a manager in five or six years. This is not to suggest that psychopaths never work in routine, dead-end jobs or in trades or professions that would seem to require training and experience. Many do, but it is very likely that their qualifications are questionable; their performance self-serving, unreliable and untrustworthy; and their actions even illegal. Think of high pressure sales representatives, predatory repair people, "pump and dump" stock promoters, Internet scamsters, fraudulent counselors, and shady professionals of all sorts, to name but a few.

Turning on the charm when needed - social chameleons
Perhaps one of the most effective skills psychopaths use to to get the trust of people is their ability to charm them. They often have an engaging manner and make great first impressions on people. Upon this first impression, they may build an elaborate fictitious character, persona or mask . A psychopath can appear strong, naive, dominant, submissive, trustworthy, worldly, or whatever he or she believes will get others to respond positively to manipulative overtures. Some rely on social stereotypes to help them create a useful facade. For example, they might foster impressions of a suffering artist, a misunderstood spouse, a successful business person, a celebrity, a member of a respected profession, or a person with connections to the rich, famous or infamous .
...........
Some psychopaths lay the charm on too thick, coming across as glib, superficial and unconvincing. However, the truly talented ones have raised their ability to charm people to that of an art, priding themselves on their ability to present a fictional self to others that is convincing, taken at face value, and difficult to penetrate. Psychopaths do naturally what some politicians, salesmen and promoters have to work hard to achieve: impress listeners with how they say something. In criminal cases, it is sometimes only after the authorities uncover some heinous crime or masterful deceit that a psychopath's charming mask of sincerity, integrity and honesty is questioned. In less dramatic cases, it may still take much day-to-day exposure before the facade becomes transparent to a few studious observers, but this rarely happens with most people with whom they interact.

The broad framework of a 3 phase process used by many psychopaths consists of assessment, manipulation and abandonment.

First, they assess the value of individuals to their needs, and their psychological strengths and weaknesses. Second, they manipulate the individuals (now potential victims) by feeding them carefully crafted messages, while constantly using feedback from them to build and maintain control. Not only is this an effective approach to take with most people, it also allows psychopaths to talk their way around and out of any difficulty quickly and effectively if confronted or challenged. Third, they leave the drained and bewildered victims when they are bored or otherwise through with them.

In the assessment phase, the psychopath is looking for people who would serve his or her needs in different ways. In corporate environment (and possibly elsewhere), the psychopath targets people in positions of power so that they can be cultivated as "patrons" supporting and backing up the psychopath publicly. Then there are the "pawns" - the ones who are cultivated so that their work can be used or proselytized by the psychopath to elevate his or her status amongst the patrons. People who are not deemed useful by the psychopath are given the cold shoulder - they are "extras". Once the potential targets have been identified, the psychopath turns on his or her charm for manipulation purpose.

In discussing the mechanics of psychopathic manipulation, Babiak talks of 3 facets of personality. One that is consciously projected to others based on how we would like other people to see us is the public personality. Secondly, there is the internal or private personality that we experience inside ourselves. Thirdly, there is attributed personality or reputation - the view that others have of us based on what we say or do.

Your persona gives the psychopath a picture of the traits and characteristics that you value in yourself. Your persona may also reveal, to an astute observer, insecurities or weaknesses that you wish to minimize or hide from view. As an ardent student of human behavior, the psychopath will then gently test the inner strengths and needs that are part of your private self and eventually build a personal relationship with you by communicating (through words and deeds) four important messages.
The first message is that the psychopath likes and values the strengths and talents presented by your persona. In other words, the psychopath positively reinforces your self-presentation, saying in effect, I like who you are . Reinforcing one's persona is a simple, yet powerful influence technique, especially if communicated in a convincing - that is charming - manner.
..............................
We invest considerable mental energy in presenting our persona every time we interact with someone. But behind our outward presentation, and sometimes mixed in with it, are aspects of our private self, both positive and negative. We rarely want to share parts of our private self with business associates and acquaintances; we reserve this for close friends and serious relationships. However, as a motivated student of human nature, the psychopath, on meeting us for the first time, can surmise some of the issues or concerns that exist in our private self. Using this information, the psychopath crafts a simulated persona - a mask - that mirrors or complements these characteristics. Subtly, through clever banter, the psychopath begins to share bits of personal information, seemingly letting down his or her guard with us. These conversations resonate with you because someone is sharing personal details that reflect values, beliefs and issues similar to your own. The psychopath's second message is I am just like you .
..................
Having parts of your private self understood and accepted by someone means that you can relax, let down your guard and begin to trust that this person is different - he or she may like you for who you really are, behind your own mask or persona. Happily and with relief, you conclude that the psychopath will not pose a psychological threat; in effect, the psychopath's third message is: Your secrets are safe with me . Safety or security is one of our most basic psychophysical needs; the psychopath willingly fulfills this need.
........................
Relationships develop and mature as people share more and more of their private lives with their partners, including their inner desires, hopes, and dreams. Some of it is personal, other topics are mundane, but all of it is relevant to manufacturing a picture that fulfills our deep psychological needs and expectations. The psychopath is all too ready and willing to fulfill these needs. Because a psychopath - our new true friend - is an excellent communicator, he or she easily picks out topics that are important to us and reflects sympathetic points of view, sometimes complete with enthusiasm or "emotion" reinforce the spoken word`s. The psychopath uses glib verbal and social skills to build a firm reputation in your mind - one that includes strengths you wish you had and weaknesses you understand . This psychological bond capitalizes on your inner personality, holding out the promise of greater depth and possible intimacy, and offering a relationship that is special, unique, equal - forever. This is not easy to carry out , but the psychopath exerts notable effort communicating that he or she is exactly the person you have been looking for in a friend, partner or new hire. The psychopath's fourth message is : I am the perfect friend....lover....partner ... for you .
Once this is accomplished, the psychopathic bond - your fate - is sealed. Later interactions merely reinforce the foundation formed during this early part of the manipulation process.
......................
In summary, the psychopath's psychological game involves analyzing the individual's expectations and desires, and then reflecting them in a psychological mask that is so convincing that the person bonds with him or her. This bonding can take place very quickly, even during the space of one cross-country airplane ride.
The people who are regarded as "extras" by the psychopath - the ones who were not actively being manipulated by him or her - often have the best chance of seeing through some of the manipulation and deceit. These observers often see through the "psychopathic fiction" and see behind the mask. However, few of them usually speak up and the reasons behind their silence include "I am minding my own business" "No one would listen to me", and "It is not my place to intervene". Sometimes the reason for silence is a feeling of intimidation - the individual is considered to be far too influential to tangle with.

Babiak writes in a corporate organization context

{U}nsuspecting coworkers quickly form impressions of psychopaths based on their personal interactions and the details they learn from others. For most, the initial impression is positive and these individuals either like the person or take a neutral position.
....
We found that two separate and distinct camps evolve with opposing views of the psychopath's value to the organization. The supporters (labeled pawns and patrons) felt that they were valuable contributors to the success of the organization; they described them as team players and solid corporate citizens. Detractors (labeled extras and organizational police in the psychopathic drama), however, reported all manner of underhanded, deceitful and manipulative behaviors by the same individuals. We know that this was possible because their view of these individuals was not colored by the charming facade.
...................
Certainly it is not unusual for individuals to be liked by some and disliked by others. This is as true at work as it is at home or school. But in an organization, there is usually a majority point of view based on a specific, identifiable organizational issue such as a turf battle, and a minority view based on personal issue such as envy. Normal political battling rarely surfaces in so clear and intense form as it does with a psychopath. Clearly, the detractors despised these individuals and the supporters almost worshipped them. It was as if employees were describing two entirely different people. In a great number of these situations, it seemed that the psychopath could switch from warm and friendly to cold, distant and almost hostile depending on with whom they were interacting.
In studying frauds and scams perpetrated by psychopathic individuals, Babiak mentions something like a "one third rule". In a group getting manipulated, a third would see the psychopath as "convincing and charismatic", a third will be suspicious ("he makes my skin crawl"), and a third will reserve judgment.
The interesting part is that when scams, deceptions, and depredations are revealed, many of the initial opinions remain unchanged . Those who were impressed at first still believe they were right and that there must be a misunderstanding or mistake. Those who were suspicious at first now feel vindicated ("I knew he was bad news"). And the remaining third still are on the fence ("what happened?").
