Russian Weather Forecasters Warn: 'Winter Is Coming' - http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/russian-weather-forecasters-warn-winter-is-coming/540033.html

After a relatively mild winter last year, this year's cold season in Russia is expected to be much harsher, possibly heralding the start of a 60-year cold spell, Russian weather forecasters said.

Winter has already started in Russia's Yamal peninsula, where night temperatures dropped to minus 18 degrees Celsius halfway through October, Vladimir Melnikov, a member of the Tyumen branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told the TASS news agency Wednesday.

Melnikov said evidence showed the Earth was not only gradually warming up but was also experiencing shorter cycles of cooling, saying the forecast for the upcoming winter heralded the beginning of a 60-year cold cycle.

The head of the Federal Meteorological Service, Alexander Frolov, said Tuesday that this year's winter would be colder than last winter, TASS reported.

Last year, forecasters warned of a particularly harsh winter, with temperatures 5 to 10 degrees Celsius lower than the previous year, the report said. But some regions experienced much warmer weather than usual. Temperatures in the Sverdlovsk region, for example, were up to 10 degrees warmer than average in mid-December, TASS reported.

What does the bolded part mean? Is he trying to say, oh, don't worry, it's not the start of an Ice Age that might last thousands of years?

No, it looks like it's a deliberate misrepresentation.

Excerpt in question (in Russian):

Наши наблюдения о цикличности климата подтверждают факт того, что на Земле идут не только процессы глобального потепления, но и похолодания. Эти циклы разной периодичности.

Translation:

Our observations about climate cyclicality confirm the fact that there are not only periods of global warming but also of global cooling. These cycles are of different periodicity.

There is no mention at all about shorter cycles of cooling.

Well, well, well. Caught in the act.

I think we ought to merge this thread with the Ice Age Cometh thread.

Indeed, I haven't noticed this detail Altair. Moreover, in the text quoted by you, the chief Russian meteorologist also says:

Будут периоды длительного похолодания и периоды оттепели.

Translation:

There will be long periods of cold and also warm periods.

Looks like Moscow Times did misrepresented it.

These news are interesting and we could get a very cold winter as already stated with the arriving of one swan in Great Britain.

This North Atlantic Blob, and how it would affect the gulf stream is illustrated here:

But it looks that several effect are converging to the cooling, mostly the Sun going to sleep.

As well as this to consider -

30 Arctic Snowy owls arrive in Wisconsin; earliest date ever reported and record numbers

About 30 snowy sightings were reported through Wednesday in Wisconsin, according to Ryan Brady, a wildlife biologist with the Department of Natural Resources who oversees the Wisconsin eBird website.

The reports are earlier in the season and higher in number than any year on record.

"It's unprecedented," said Tom Erdman, curator of the Richter Museum of Natural History at UW-Green Bay who began conducting snowy owl research in Wisconsin in the late 1950s. "It's causing us to ask 'Why?"

Record snowfall in Siberia – 40 cm (16 inches) overnight:

Frig.

I bought some snow shoes a few months back in preparation for another crazy winter. I don't know how much use being able to walk around will be however, if the world gets buried. "Where are you heading?" "To the GOOD part of the icy tundra of doom."

I wonder how many of us have experienced "Death by Sudden Glacier" before? It ought to be.., interesting? -Though, call me a coward, but I'd much rather skip that ride.

It's unfortunate that all the warmer parts of the world seem to be full of lunatics.

Sigh.

I always try to help the spiders out of my shower so they don't drown. I'm not expecting any such assistance. The floor of my washroom doesn't look like much fun anyway, even if it is somewhat less immediately arachnicidal.

Cold morning today in Macedonia.Max temperature of only 10C and much colder on higher altitudes Yesterday the first snow for this year in a mountains , only 20 km from my place. In the ski resort Mavrovo. It is at altitude of 1000 m to 1600 m above sea level. Very early and very unusual.
Even in the mountains the first snow usually is around end of November or beginning of December. Too cold and too early this year.

Here in Texas we were drenched in rain for the first time in a while.
Indeed. Friends of mine in the Dallas area were talking earlier this morning about the amount of rain they'll be getting from Hurricane Patricia. It went from a tropical storm to a category 5 and they're saying it's going to be on record as the strongest hurricane ever measured in the Western Hemisphere!

Shades of 'Day After Tomorrow'!

Earliest snow in China since the last 10 years, -9°C

Heavy snow has blanketed a large swath of north China on Monday, Oct 26th, disturbing traffic but bringing beautiful winter scenery.
A snowstorm hit Mohe, China’s northernmost county in Heilongjiang Province, from early morning on Monday.
The depth of snow reached 8 centimeters (3.14 inches) by 17:00 and the heavy snow brought the visibility down to less than 100 meters (328 feet) as well. Vehicles have to slow down on snow-covered roads, while the local sanitation department dispatched snowplows to clear up the roads.
The airport in the county has not been affected by the weather so far, and tourists were excited when they saw the snowy city.
“I came from Shenzhen. I’ve never seen real snow. Today I feel very lucky. White snow wraps everything. It’ like a wonderland. It’s amazing,” said Huang Chengbo, a tourist from south China city of Shenzhen.
The weather forecast said the snow would continue until Tuesday morning.

Donald Trump about global warming :D

“Surprise? 1970’s global cooling alarmists were pushing the same no-growth liberal agenda as today’s global warming.” – Donald Trump

“I call it weather. You know, the weather changes.” -Donald Trump“

Obama’s speech on climate change was scary. It will lower our standard of living and raise costs of fuel & food for everyone.” -Donald Trump“Gore wants us to clean up our factories and plants in order to protect us from global warming, when China and other countries couldn’t care less. It would make us totally non-competitive in the manufacturing world, and China, Japan and India are laughing at America’s stupidity.” – Donald Trump

“With the coldest winter ever recorded, with snow setting record levels up and down the coast, the Nobel committee should take the Nobel Prize back from Al Gore.” – Donald Trump

“Remember Cap-and-Trade? Obama outright admitted that his plan to tax businesses on carbon emissions that exceeded his arbitrary cap would drive energy prices sky high. ” – Donald Trump

This very expensive global warming bullshit has got to stop. Our planet is freezing, record low temps, and our GW scientists are stuck in ice.” – Donald Trump

Did Trump have to be such a jerk to that young woman who asked a fairly straight forward question? What a tool. Though I do like his 'take back the Nobel Prize' quote.
