The CSX train heading from Portsmouth to Rocky Mount, North Carolina derailed around 2:30am, causing a large fuel spill and fire near a Dominion Power station and a chemical plant, according to NewsChannel 3′s Darragh Copley. 10 rail cars and 2 locomotives overturned from the train, which had more than 30 cars and was carrying mixed freight. The engineer and conductor on the train were injured, one was taken to a hospital in Franklin, the other was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Strong winds from a thunderstorm blew over a portion of a freight train on the West Side Wednesday night, briefly halting nearby Metra trains. About 8:30 p.m., the heavy winds blew seven cars of a Union-Pacific freight train, on to their sides near Kedzie Avenue, railroad spokesman Mark Davis said. The derailment happened on a branch line away from the Metra tracks, Davis said. However, the incident prompted Metra to temporarily stop Union-Pacific/West line service, the commuter rail agency’s website said. As of 10 p.m., Metra trains are moving again but are delayed between 20 and 70 minutes. No one on the freight train was hurt and crews are working to put the cars upright again as of Wednesday night, Davis said. Each car was carrying two ocean-going containers of consumer goods.

A train derailment just off of Route 95 on Seville Road, sent freight cars into the Spoon River on Monday afternoon. The train traveling from Good Hope to Peoria was carrying corn syrup at the time of the crash.
A spokesperson from the Keokuk Junction Railway said it's not certain whether the train derailed first or if the bridge collapsed from underneath the train. There were no hazardous materials on-board. No injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation.

Rescuers are on the scene of a train derailment in Gibbstown, Gloucester County. The derailment occurred near Billingsport Road around 12:00 p.m. Authorities say the train was being pulled into PBF Energy's Paulsboro refinery. Only one car derailed and it was empty of any cargo. A company called SMS Rail Line was operating the train at the time of the incident. Parts of Billingsport Road were blocked. There was no immediate word as to how this derailment happened.

Officials say the derailment happened just after 12:30 am Sunday on Gumsprings road near Cotton street and Eastman road in Longview. Authorities say a Burlington train was switching cars when two tank cars derailed. One was carrying diesel fuel which did not spill, while the second car spilled a small amount of tar.
Officials say there was no danger to the public. Longview fire officials responded to the scene and railroad workers remain on the scene at this hour.

No injuries were reported after officials said a train derailed Saturday morning along Spring Garden Street and Merritt Drive in Greensboro. Authorities said seven railroad cars derailed from a Norfolk Southern train headed from Linwood to Winston-Salem around 10:50 a.m. Norfolk Southern official Robin Chapman said the train comprised of 120 railroad cars with mixed freight. Chapman said all of the derailed cars were empty and most were lumber cars, none of which carried any hazardous material. Officials said the cause of the crash is under investigation, but other rail services are not expected to be impacted.

MADRID -- Spain's state rail company says 22 people suffered minor injuries when a commuter train crashed into another train in a station in the northeastern city of Barcelona. RENFE spokesman Antonio Carmona says the collision occurred in Sants station at 10:05 a.m. (0805 GMT) Friday when the passenger train collided with another that was stopped. He says 22 people reported that they had suffered bruises but that only 10 needed treatment and none was hospitalized. Carmona says the cause of the collision is not yet known. A high-speed train crashed in northwestern Spain on July 24 killing 79 people.

NEW YORK (AP) — Parts of Interstate 95 turned into a virtual parking lot Thursday as tens of thousands of Metro-North Railroad commuters scrambled for alternate routes between the densely populated Connecticut suburbs and New York City after a power failure on a heavily trafficked rail line.

Officials were working to find alternative power sources to end the hours-long delays that they cautioned could last for weeks after a high-voltage feeder cable failed early Wednesday at a suburban New York station.

Metro-North, the nation's second-largest commuter railroad, said it could accommodate about 33 percent of its regular ridership and urged customers to stay at home or find alternative transportation.

At Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan on Thursday, ticket windows for the New Haven, Conn., line were closed. Commuters who rode other lines said those trains were more crowded than usual.

Matt Sullivan, 27, an architect, said it usually takes him half an hour to get to Grand Central from his home in Greenwich. That doubled when he drove to White Plains, N.Y., and took the Harlem line.

"It's disappointing but my company will give me a laptop so I can work from home a couple of days," he said.

The broken circuit could take two to three weeks to repair, the New York-based utility Consolidated Edison said.

"This is going to be a substantial disruption for a substantial period of time," Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said at a Wednesday evening news conference in Hartford, adding the line serving New Haven was the busiest in the nation, with 125,000 daily passengers and serving 38 stations and 23 towns. "Folks, plan on long-term lack of service or being underserved."

"I'm just trying to get through the next two days," said Pete Hartney, 64, who makes a daily two-hour commute from Guilford, Conn., to New York City that has stretched by 90 minutes. "I'm going to try to put up with whatever they throw our way ... then formulate a plan over the weekend."

Amtrak said it would offer limited service between New York and Boston on Thursday because of the power problem.

Irate Metro-North passengers vented online. The head of a commuter advisory group complained that rail service was disrupted frequently over the summer for needed track work in New York. Wednesday's disruption, though not Metro-North's fault, adds to frustration among commuters, commuter advocate Jim Cameron said.

Spanish rail bosses charged over deadly derailment

A Spanish judge on Tuesday charged the president of the company in charge of Spain's rail infrastructure and his two predecessors in connection with a train derailment that killed 79 people in July.

The three men are among 30 current and former leaders of the company Adif, who were charged over "a serious lack of action" on security issues, under a judicial inquiry into the accident.


Current Adif president Gonzalo Ferre was summoned to appear before Judge Luis Alaez on October 10, and his predecessors Enrique Verdeguer and Antonia Gonzalez Martin on December 11, according to the court ruling.

The eight carriage train was hurtling around a bend at 179 kph (111 mph), more than twice the speed limit, when it flew off the tracks near the northwestern city of Santiago de Compostela on July 24, according to its data recording "black boxes".

The driver, 52-year-old Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, was on the telephone to the on-board conductor and stopped speaking just 11 seconds before the train flew off the tracks and ploughed into a concrete siding, coming to rest in a mangled heap.

Garzon has been provisionally charged with 79 counts of reckless homicide. He has been released under court supervision while the investigation into the crash continues.

Judge Alaez criticised the disconnection of the advanced European Rail Traffic Management System on the stretch of railway, which would put in place automatic braking if the speed limit was exceeded.

The tracks were however run under the standard Spanish ASFA system "without demanding or adopting any measures of additional security...to try and compensate for this obvious lack of security on a high-speed railway segment."

ASFA will only put in place an emergency brake if the train passes a signal at the time at which it is speeding.

The judge said the Adif leaders "allowed this situation to endure until the accident, with a serious risk for people's life."

Adif and the state company that runs the trains, Renfe, have both denied any technical failings and said correct procedures were followed.

Adif in August said it had improved speed signs at 80 "transition points" on its network where trains are required to significantly reduce their speed.

"Oh my God. I told those guys at safety that it was dangerous and one day we would lose concentration and pay for it," he said as he lay trapped in the wreckage.

So, it seems that a combination of human error and a managerial system of 'profit before people / safety' occured here. It was an accident waiting to happen. I did consider initially that the driver may have been deliberately 'mind controlled' (particularly with his alleged comments) or had his concentration impaired as a result of HAARP type technology or similar. Perhaps though, it is just a tragic reminder, that the pathologicals running these companies, really do not care at all about the well being of people.

A CN Rail train has derailed just west of Landis, Sask., resulting in a grassfire and an oil leak. There are no injuries. RCMP said crews were on the scene Wednesday morning fighting the blaze and dealing with the derailment. None of the 16 derailed cars had caught fire, the RCMP said. The fire, which was in a ditch, was extinguished. The Saskatchewan government said the cars were loaded with ethanol, crude oil, car carriers and grain. One of the cars filled with ethanol was on its side, but nothing was leaking out, the province said.

CENTRAL CITY — An eastbound Union Pacific train headed from California to Chicago derailed near Central City at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. “There were no injuries,” said Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis. “The cause of the derailment is under investigation.” All 42 cars that went off the tracks were flat cars loaded with ocean-going containers. Those containers had everything from electronics to batteries to apparel and other consumer goods loaded in them, Davis said. “Crews worked throughout the night to move the rail cars off the tracks and to begin repairs,” Davis said. Both tracks there were damaged. A total of 800 feet of rail had to be replaced on one track and 2,000 feet of rail needed to be replaced on the other, he said. One track was expected to reopen at 5 p.m. Sunday. It’s unknown when the second track will reopen, Davis said. As of late Sunday afternoon, 20 trains had been detoured to other routes around the damage. Another 40 trains sat idle waiting for the tracks to clear, he said. The derailment occurred at Highway 30 and 21st Street.

Here in Spain, under my connaissance, nobody is talking about this accident. There are more important themes: political monetary scandals and the assassination of a young little girl, in Galicia, by, they think, her mother and father. This last theme is very important, it grabs the attention of tv garbage programs, the most seen by families. Spanish mothers love this kind of stories: young infants that are murderer by their parents, they even go to see the presume murderer like they go to the movies. The accident of Santiago de Compostella is forgotten. The 79 victims are spirits that nobody remembers anymore, apart the families of them.

AMARILLO, Texas – Three freight trains collided in the Texas Panhandle before dawn Wednesday, derailing up to 30 cars and injuring four crewmembers, including two critically. An eastbound BNSF Railway train rear-ended a stopped train, then moments later a westbound train collided with the two-train wreck, just east of Amarillo, according to the Department of Public Security. The accident was reported shortly after 4:30a.m.
"The wreckage was mangled up," said Sr. Trooper Chris Ray. Joe Faust, a spokesman for Fort Worth-based BNSF, said no hazardous material spilled and that the trains were hauling flatbed cars carrying truck trailers. The cause of the accident was under investigation, Faust said. Two workers on the first train suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Two crewmembers on the second train were critically injured and transported to an Amarillo hospital, Faust said. Names of the workers and details of their injuries were not immediately released. Preliminary estimates indicate between 20 and 30 cars derailed, Faust said. Rail traffic was being rerouted and heavy equipment would be used to clear the tracks, he said.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Two Chicago Transit Authority trains collided in a western suburb of Chicago during Monday morning's rush hour, resulting in 33 injuries, the agency reported.

The incident happened at the Harlem Station in Forest Park, Illinois, west of Chicago. One train was standing at the station at the time of the accident at 7:45 a.m. local time, according to CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski. The cause is under investigation.

Thirty-three people were transported to nine area hospitals with what appeared to be non-serious injuries, Hosinski said. One of those requesting medical attention was a train operator.

Service on the line was shut down for a couple of hours and the station where the collision occurred remained closed after service was restored, the CTA said.

Between the train stuff that's happened this year and the number of meteors being spotted (I saw one myself Friday night!), it's enough to make a person think we're on the cusp of something big and nasty.

I see the movie "Gravity" comes out this weekend, and the premise seems to be that an astronaut is stranded due to a meteor strike on the shuttle. Awfully good timing if you ask me, coincidence even. Except I don't believe in coincidence.

The train cars derailed at Ruffin Road and Lick Fork Creek Road around 9 a.m. One of the derailed cars was carrying paper and the other two were empty. The 95-car train was headed from Linwood to Allentown, Pa. The cause of the derailment has not been determined.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Strong winds blew over part of a moving freight train Thursday blocking two tracks as a second train approached the wreckage. The BNSF Railway train hauling double stacks of shipping containers derailed about 12:15 p.m. on Laguna Pueblo about 30 miles west of Albuquerque. New Mexico State Police reported the containers were empty. State Police also reported track sensors alert a second train of the track being blocked in time to avoid a collision. Amtrak's eastbound Southwest Chief already had passed through the area when the derailment happened. The westbound train was due out of Albuquerque at 4:45 p.m. but likely will be held there until at least one track reopens. Strong winds raked much of New Mexico Thursday with gusts as high as 60 mph forecast. Earlier this year winds blew a train off the track on the approach to the Pecos River bridge in Santa Rosa in eastern New Mexico. A second train derailed at virtually the same spot a month later, but that incident was blamed on a 51-degree temperature swing warping rails out of alignment.

Norfolk Southern railroad tracks run over Riverside Drive and along the Lehigh River.

MENLO, IA. — A truck driver was flown to a Des Moines hospital Tuesday evening after the truck collided with a train near Menlo. The collision occurred shortly before 7 p.m. on Talon Avenue, near an ethanol plant between Menlo and Stuart. The driver of the semitrailer truck, who authorities did not identify, had just dropped off a load of grain and was headed south. The train was traveling east. There are no lights or crossing arms at the railroad tracks. Trains generally pass through the intersection at 35 to 40 mph, officials with Menlo Fire and Rescue said. The driver was taken by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Fire and rescue officials did not know the extent of his injuries.

As AP reports, an eyewitness noted "the fireball was so big, it shot across both lanes of the Yellowhead (Highway)... there's fire on both sides." According to the latest reports, the train cars remain ablaze as the liquified hydrocarbons continue to leak. Parkland County police chief added "how it exploded and why is yet to be determined," but while only 2 injuries (CN employees) and no deaths have been reported, he noted "it's still a risky situation so we need to contain as much as possible and keep people far away." This explosion comes just 3 months after the disaster that too 47 lives in Lac-Megantic and once again raises questions over the safety of dramatically increased rail traffic from/to the Bakken.

Canadian National spokesman Louis-Antoine Paquin said 13 cars — four carrying petroleum crude oil and nine loaded with liquified petroleum gas — came off the tracks around 1 a.m. local time in the hamlet of Gainford, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Edmonton. The entire community of roughly 100 people was evacuated.

Argentina train crash injures dozens

Nearly 100 people have been injured, some seriously, in a train crash at a commuter rail stop in the Argentinean capital, where dozens died in a similar accident at the same station last year.

The accident occurred at Once Station in Buenos Aires on Saturday as the train failed to stop at the end of the line, slamming into a retaining wall and hurting at least 99 people.

Footage from the crash site showed several derailed train cars, with some lying on the platform. Several passengers were trapped onboard until firefighters could rescue them.

Some 30 ambulances and two helicopters participated in the rescue operation, taking the injured to a dozen nearby hospitals.

“Ninety-nine patients have been treated at Buenos Aires hospitals due to the accident,” said local health Chief Graciela Reybaud.

The exact cause of the crash remains unclear, but one witness said the train appeared to have had problems with its breaks prior to the accident.

The train seemed as if it “was having trouble braking for two stations” before crashing at the end station, said Julio, adding that his fellow passengers “were getting nervous, as they remembered” the fatal accident at the same train station in 2012.

In February 2012, 51 people died and another 700 were injured, when another train crashed into a buffer wall, after it failed to stop at the end station.

Argentina has experienced a number of other train accidents recently, including a serious collision last June, when a speeding commuter train rammed a stationary train, killing three people and hurting more than 300 others.

The government has decided on several measures to improve the problem-plagued train system, including installing surveillance cameras in the conductors’ cabs and replacing old worn-out train cars.

No injuries or hazardous materials were reported in the crash that happened on the BNSF Railway 18 miles south of Socorro around 5 a.m.
New Mexico State Police reported early indications a broken rail may have caused the initial derailment with additional rail cars jackknifing against that wreckage. A railroad spokesman later said it's unclear if the rail broke before or because of the derailment.

Photos from the scene show about 20 freight cars stacked up in the foothills above the Rio Grande floodplain and Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Preserve. Many of them are two- or three-deck auto haulers that can carry as many as two dozen smaller cars each.

Battered Volkswagens were visible inside some of the cars.

A refuge spokesperson said operations there were not directly affected although a section of State Road 1 leading from south of the visitors center to near Interstate 25 was closed.

Refuge personnel also were working with railroad contractors to minimize environmental damage and any threats to wildlife from cleaning up the wreck and repairing the track.

The train originated in El Paso on Saturday and was headed to the railroad's freight yard in Belen.

Several CN tanker cars — four laden with petroleum crude oil and nine carrying liquefied petroleum gas — came off the rails on Oct. 19 (_www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/albertans-remain-out-of-homes-in-wake-of-cn-derailment-1.2127244), in the hamlet of Gainford, Alta., about 80 kilometres west of Edmonton.
