The new US defence secretary, Pete Hegseth, said he will ‘achieve peace through strength’, as demanded by President Donald Trump, by ‘restoring the warrior spirit, rebuilding the military and re-establishing deterrence’.

In an official statement published on Saturday, the Pentagon chief indicated that these three mechanisms will allow him to achieve the mission that Trump has imposed on him, which is to ‘deter war’ and, if necessary, to ‘defeat and destroy’ enemies.

In this regard, he said he would support the president's ‘priority of responsibly ending wars’, although he did not write about which conflicts he was referring to. He said the US will work with its ‘partners and allies to deter communist China's aggression in the Indo-Pacific’.

Hegseth also stressed that rebuilding the military means reviving the defence industrial base and reforming acquisition processes, as well as passing a financial audit and deploying innovative technologies, in order for the US to remain the ‘most potent and lethal force in the world’.

‘All of this will be done with a focus on lethality, meritocracy, accountability, standards and readiness. [...] Our enemies will not rest or be appeased. And neither will we,’ he added.

On Friday, the US Senate approved Hegseth as Pentagon chief by one vote. His nomination had caused a stir in the country because of multiple scandals in which he has been involved. He made his name as a Fox News host, held the rank of major in the Army National Guard and is a combat veteran after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

However, he has received several allegations of misconduct, including drunkenness at work events, sexual misconduct and possible financial mismanagement. This led to doubts about his effectiveness as defence secretary and split votes in the upper house. In the end, his approval was completed by US Vice President James David Vance, who exercised his right to cast the deciding vote.

His senate grilling is worth watching. The democrat senators in the committee raised many valid points and tripped him up numerous times, exposing some obvious lies, and especially highlighting his complete lack of competency in management etc.

He sat there the whole time smirking like somebody who knows he's untouchable, and has been 'put on' by a higher power.

I'm not inclined to totally condemn a young energetic man for drinking too much and sleeping around, as long as there has been an awakening since, but unlike with RFK's story (and his genuine passion), I find Hegseth's story of recovery/conversion to be BS. Sometimes you can see it all in the smirk.

His encounter in the senate has since been memed on X, with clips painting him as the righteous, masculine man vs. the female senators such as Hirono and Gilibrand, cast as the nagging harpies. This sums up the current climate and attitude among the right.

I believe that he is the poster child of the long-awaited conservative backlash, characterized by dumb fundie Christianity, Israel worship, RETVRN bros, actual toxic masculinity and all that comes with it. Yeah we'll throw out the seed oils and the gender surgeries, but we'll lose a lot in the process.

How well this attitude will work in a world of rising Great Powers is the real question.

That's the impression I am getting of this entire situation, as it slowly takes shape.

There was once a time where I would have aligned with the liberal critics of GWB, then a nasty shift took place in reality and I found myself more aligned with conservative critics of their demented woke agenda, now it seems like I find myself witnessing yet another shift in reality and the conservative critics of a few months ago have now started to go "full retard" in some areas that I can't agree with.

And it all seems rather sudden, but in reality it makes sense, problem solution, pushed down leftist ideology to the point of repulsion and use that repulsive jump to slide whatever else in, with the resistant conservatives having their guard down due to the ecstasy of victory, god knows what will be coming down the pipe.

Yeah, I know well at least two male peers who were addicts, womanizers and shirkers of responsibility, but managed to transform, in middle age, with professional help, into stable partners and fathers, excellent providers who produce quality work, are open about their dodgy pasts, and willing to go the extra mile to be helpful and cooperative. So I believe such turnarounds are possible.

Whether Hegseth is like this, I don't know, and may be doubtful, but still I remind myself that as far as the public is concerned, he has a job to do in a narrow context, and how he performs in the job is what matters. For example, Eric Clapton was an irresponsible addict and callous womanizer, but still possessed particular skills and could've been hired to produce a good guitar solo, if that's what you wanted him to do. I doubt that Trump's opponents would have an appropriate response to any offer of magnanimity were it to be made, they continue to fight on. This is still an early stage in the battle. But his hubris and certain choices of his are classic examples of the tragic flaws in heroes. He needs to restrain those urges and check his alignment with the wishes of the people who elected him. Getting in bed with the AI tech gurus and their agenda, his callous comment on Gaza is out of bounds.
