'V' the series to begin on ABC

Now the twist at the end of the last episode. A secret operation by the government to fight back covertly. The way it was written was kind of shoddy. The FBI woman's partner a while back was questioning whether she was in Fifth Column resistance, almost like he was looking to gain some points in finding a FBI leak to them. Now, he's working for the government with similar aims and was watching her to make sure she is not with the V's?

Yeah Fastwalker, it is kind of getting too real. The aliens are so high tech, yet they have this need to want more and more. Reminds me of how STS needs to consume to "be stronger".

Maybe. Or maybe there is subtlety unusual for Hollywood.

Maybe he changed sides.

Or maybe his job was to appease the V's by throwing to them the obvious (poor fieldcraft) Fifth Column supporters, in order to hide his real motives and to give him the opportunity to support the high level opposition.

Maybe he is still supporting the V's and is infiltrating the secret government resistance.

Anyway, I have watched the V shows and am surprised at how many ideas the writers have leaked out as "fiction".

yeah ive noticed the series getting more interesting as usual. somehow season breaks (particularly this one) seems awfully long :)

the final episode was highly wishful thinking i feel - a secret gov. project that has ostensibly has good intentions and is monitoring the 'threat'. this kind of stuff only happens on TV - where the govt is on the side of the people

Started watching the second second season on iTunes and gotta say - amazing! Definitely better than the first series - got hooked and ended up watching the first 6 episodes with a friend last night. Really keeps ya on the edge of the seat!

I thought there were quite a lot of interesting references to the material discussed on this forum - even soul smashing. Some scenes were pretty disturning - like the torture of the Lizzard in the basement. This made the Fifth Column as bad as the Visitors but then we are shown the human torture scene where the soul is extracted. Just mind blowing stuff. Looking forward to finishing the rest of it tonight.

Sure is a shame and what a cliff-hanger, too. The fact that the series got an axe is interesting in itself. Hopefully it will get picked up though "they" probably don't want to give any more clues - especially on how to resist the "bliss".

Mind you, this "we can live together in peace and embrace the Soul" jive is a little rich... Especially, when a Lizzard tells you this.

Exit "V," enter "Falling Skies:"

[quote author=Wikipedia]
Falling Skies tells the story of the aftermath of an alien invasion that not only neutralizes the world's power grid, but also destroys the combined militaries of all the world's countries in a very short (less than a day) time. It is alluded that over 90% of the human population is killed within a few days. The story picks up almost 7 months after the invasion, and follows a group of survivors who must band together in order to fight back. The group, known as the Second Massachusetts (an allusion to a Boston militia in the American Revolutionary War), is led by Boston University history professor Tom Mason who, while in search of his son Ben, must put his extensive knowledge of military history into practice as one of the leaders of the resistance movement.

I wonder if "V" was a little too close to reality for comfort, so they needed another way to keep pushing the "3D Aliens" meme.

Argonaut, have you watched the 2 hour pilot for falling skies? I'm planning to watch this weekend :)

Just an update, but V has been cancelled. :(

Maybe the concept of the show was hitting a little bit too close to 'home'?

Edit - Should've read the last page of this thread. Moksha already mentioned this back in June! :P

....Is this a sign we should acquire DVD sets of the original V and distribute them bountifully to the public?

Just recalling here...My neighbor (retired construction worker) confessed to having recorded all of the original V series on VHS... thought that was cool to know he was interested in SciFi. I don't recall watching much TV, or even owning a TV when that series was aired in the early 80's, but since reading Laura's High Strangeness book and the transcripts included toward the end of the book, the creep-factor of watching the new V series was raised ten-fold.
And to repeat what has already been said: The truth IS stranger (and creepier) than fiction.

An interesting V parallel with reality is the discrediting and defaming of scientists throughout the series:
Borrowing from Wikipedea on the original V series
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_%281983_miniseries%29:
Strange events begin to occur and scientists become objects of increasing media hostility. They experience government restrictions on their activities and movements. Others, particularly those keen on examining the Visitors more closely, begin to disappear or are discredited....

Scientists around the world continue to be persecuted, both to discredit them (as the part of the human population most likely to discover the Visitors' secrets) and to distract the rest of the population with a scapegoat to whom they could attribute their fears.

"By Deception Thou Shalt Wage War"...sound familiar?

Don't think it was about the ratings. From this LA Times Blog http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2009/11/abcs-v-lands-with-big-bang.html
ABC's remake of "V" got off to a strong start Tuesday night. The series, which will run through November and then return in March, came in second to CBS's juggernaut "NCIS" in viewers with 13.9 million tuning in, but easily won the 8-9 p.m. hour in the 18-49 demographic with a 5.0 rating, which translates to about 6.6 million people. (Each rating point in the 18-49 demographic equals 1.3 million people.)

Kenny Johnson, V's creator, said in this 2009 interview that there's a possible motion picture in the works. There seems to be writing credit legalities with Warner Bros TV on the television series, which may be why it was cancelled... it seems as if they wanted to squeeze out Johnson on the writing end of V...aka Hollywood greed and control, which supports the suggestion that

From this article:
'V' voice revisits familiar turf
Original creator Kenny Johnson happy with remake

People still recall the lizards and the big spaceships hovering over the nation's cities, and those two signatures also play a role in the updated "V." That's why Johnson grew concerned when his credit on the revival went to Writers' Guild arbitration.

Johnson feared that he was being completely iced out of the revival, while Warner Bros. TV says there was a misunderstanding -- claiming the plan was to simply make sure they identified the legally acceptable credit for Johnson (and avoid a skirmish down the road)....

Johnson may still prove to be a slight nuisance for Warner Bros. TV, as he pushes ahead with a rival "V" project for the big screen.

Big screen project in the works?... coooool.

As someone who has watched the original V miniseries and managed to catch the first 4 episodes of the "new" V, I'll just say that the new version really doesn't come close to being as good as the original (shocking, I know). In the new series, most of the characters were annoying and the plots contrived. About the only character who was likeable was Elizabeth Mitchell's (Juliet from Lost), but her son was about the most annoying "rebellious teenager" archetype ever created. I'm not surprised it was canceled. Even though the pilot had a good showing in the ratings category, it pretty much fell off a cliff after that once viewers realized it was not a faithful adaptation, in the sense that it just didn't captivate people like the original had.

Indeed, and I just want to warn any of you who were thinking that Falling Skies is going to be worth 2 hours of your time - it wasn't. Really bad script, acting is over the top, and I found myself wanting to quit after the first twenty minutes or so but unfortunately my boyfriend wanted to watch the rest 'just in case it gets better' - it never did.

I didn't like the new V either, watched a few episodes, but it just isn't the same as the old miniseries and it moved at a snails pace with the original story.

Everybody has different taste. For me "V" was very interesting tv series and I was sad about cancellation. Unfortunately I did not see old version, so I can say nothing about this.
I watched also "Falling Skies", it is not so bad - I saw worse.
