ERUPTION AT ETNA - NOW
(Sicily, Adrano • 16 Feb 2021, 17:44) !!

My husband Sal's mother just sent a video from Sicily which shows that Etna hurls a bigger eruption into the air, seen from the city of Adrano, located afoot of Etna on it's southwest flank.

The photo is a screen dumb from that video.

It appears that a lot of steam and ash was firstly produced - but indicative later in the photos below, it looks more like lava fountains (increased activity). Overall it still might be a matter of "permanent Strombolian activity". So, more of a moderate eruption, and not as dramatic as it looks like. However far more ash-ladden than before. pebbles are raining down over he village of Trecastagni (south-southeast Etna)

The Catania Airport just has been shut down as we speak.

Etna Paroxysm, some details

Mama Etna is all calm like a kitten now in the morning of 17 Feb 2021 - while yesterday late afternoon, the eruption at sunset, was just another Paroxysm, e.g. a short violent volcanic outburst with lots of ash and high lava mountains. According to german Vulkane.net the height of the ash reached 10 km.

Many of our friends and family members, who live at the flanks of Etna, most of them in the northern part of Catania (and neighboring villages) received plenty of ash and pebbles up to almost 1 cm (and you could hear it very clearly in their videos !!) - but no glowing material fell down (there was such a rumor) The distance between Southeast Crater and the first villages to the south (Nicolosi, Pedara, Mascalucia, Trecastagni) around 11km i believe, is too far away. With a size to 0.5 to 1 cm, you do not get glowing materal when landing on your porch.

However, my husband told me something about that some houses were evacuated due to the fast approaching lava stream - but I do not know where that was located, nor the name of that village.

What I feel made this eruption so spectacular was the high clouds at the golden sunset hour, and people made many, many mesmerizing photos. Because the glowing effect of the sunlit bulbous clouds from Etna, made the whole scenery look even more spectacular than normal. Also dependent on the location where you watched the show from.

I have one photo of Etna's Paroxysm 2015

Made during the night from Etna... so stunning, it have no words. I have it on my Mac as a background image ever since (and still) I consider it to be one of the most stunning images ever taken from an eruption - just so... unbelievable. Let me see. Yes, I found the file. I am just sorry not knowing who took it...

So, here it is, ladies and gentlemen....

Etna Paroxysm on 3 Dec 2015 at night.
Totally unreal. Beyond beautiful...

Etna was furious! Some more photos:

The above photo, I cast strong doubts...

that it was taken from yesterday's event (it is likely from a different eruption)

It appears to have been taken from Catania - the ash plume is drifting towards the north here. However, yesterdays winds came from the north, letting the ash clouds drift southwards (with ash fall in the city). Also; in this photo the sun is standing high, it's rays come from a southerly direction.... so it would mean the photo above was taken between somewhere 10 and 14 during the day.

Yesterdays Paroxysm Event started somewhere between 17:03 and 17:10 which was at a time the sun already had a strong golden color, shining low-ish from the west. I checked web cams which stores intervall photos from the past 3 days: no eruption was recorded during noon. Just the normal thin smoke.

Also the snow cover is wrong. The elevation of the snow boundary on Etna 1 day ago (before the eruption) is higher and far more broken up - compared to the photo above.

The above photos are BEAUUUUUUUUUUTFUL !!!

I love the second photo; which my husband says appears to have been taken in Acireale or Giarre (east of Etna) with the orange plume drifting, ash falls looking like orange, thunderous rain curtains falling above the houses....

Ah ! Breathtaking. Dramatico !! 😍

Volcanic Visitors on your balcony

I just got a photo sent, from a friend who lives north of Catania, in Mascalucia - which lies 19 km south of the Etna Southeast Crater. She shows the size of the ash fragments that rained down on her balcony yesterday evening, giving an interesting sense of the sizes. They are bigger than I thought.... I believe it is called Lapilli. From Italian "la pillo" : "piece/segment of a (volcanic) stone"

More Etna 16 Jan 2021

Apparently the highest lava fountain of Etna's Paroxysm reached a height of 500 meter. The Tremor chart, shows that it was indeed a very short lived event, and now it has rapidly falling to a low not reached for many weeks. Paroxysms, short violent outbursts are not rare at all on Etna, and appear to be the most common phenomena established since mid 2010s. I remember photos from 2016 which looks as if an atomic bomb had exploded over the volcano (daytime), with a chilling symmetric huge mushroom cloud.

Two photos I collected here. The first photo appears to have been taken from the southeast, possible east of Etna.

The latter photo must been taken from the north, somewhere like Linguaglossa, showing the northern side of Etna, which always shows way more snow cover during winter. (As most precipitation goes down on the northern side of Sicily and Etna), while the city of Catania in the South being "in the shadow of the volcano" with much less precipitation. Notice in the photo, that the ash cloud does indeed drift to the south.

Here you see the Tremor chart of Etna during the past week. The chart registers vibrations caused by lava flowing under the mountain, indicative for possible eruptions when going into the red. The Paroxysm is clearly outlined as a strong spike deep in the red, followed by a rapid decline after Mama Etna did her thing.

The next day another volcanic eruption...

Pacaya volcano

Complex volcano 2552 m (8,373 ft)
Guatemala, 14.38°N / -90.6°W
Current status: erupting (4 out of 5)
Last update: 18 Feb 2021 (Volcanic Ash Advisory)

Pacaya volcano near Guatemala City is one of Guatemala's most active volcanoes, and its frequent eruptions are often visible from Guatemala City. Typical activity in recent years includes strombolian activity, lava flow emission and intermittend violent phases of lava fountaining.

So, Mama Etna had 4x paroxysms 16-21 Feb 2021

You can see in the chart below (Tremor graph from Etna 14-21 Feb) - showing the "dry" version of what happened :-P while reality was endlessly more vivid. A friend in Sicily collected Etna images, sending them to me via my husband, because she knew how much I love volcanoes.

So, I send them to you showing the many faces from the events at Etna.

4th Paroxysm 20-21 Feb 2021

IMAGE 2021-02-21 10:57:14.jpg

The Image above comes from fourth paroxysm at Etna, in the night of 20-21 Feb 2021, seen from the southwest side, with towards Adrano (the city in the background). The village in the foreground, we couldn't figure out. The exposure of this photo must been longer (15-30 sec), because of the stars turning into streaks/trails.

3th Paroxysm 19 Feb 2021

The images below, showing Etna's 3th Paroxysm during daylight. Those were embedded from one of the articles by INGV, the Vulcanological Institute in Italy (italiano). The first images shows the vastness of the ash cloud Etna sent up.

2th Paroxysm 17 Feb 2021

I only identified one image coming from the second paroxysm, made by © Massimo Lo Guidice
