Volcanoes Erupting All Over

5th Paroxysm at Etna

Believe it or not, Etna started a 5th paroxysm just minutes before midnight (22-23 Feb 2021). I only stumbled over it by accident, because as I checked my many weather links, I noticed a plume NE of Etna - which I wasn't sure was a T-storm cell or Etna related. So I swooped over to some Etna webcams - and there, lots of lava appears to flow down the large depression known as 'Valle del Bove' to the east (seen in the 5th image, a webcam located in Giarre on the East Coast of Sicily, showing blurry lava flows). One comment i read said "the termal camera located in Nicolosi 15 km south of Etna, showed lava columns up 1000 meter height. This would correspond to the 3rd image below)

Good photos are not available yet, since the eruption started only 3 hours ago.

As of now, the lava streams are either active (?), or just glowing because they are fresh out. At the INGV monitoring site showing visual as well thermo images) but there is no fountaining is visible anymore. The seismic activity at four stations, have gone down to essentially 0.

This Paroxysm appears to have been a super quick one.

Images from Etna’s 5th Paroxysm

A few noteworthy images i have gotten via my italian husband, who does of course see many photos through Sicilian friends connected via Facebook (i have no facebook, never had). But there some breathtaking photos came to the fore...

One was taken in a place located north of Etna, in the mountainous region there. It is a place called Montalbano Elicona at the Natural megalithic site of Arcimusco located at around 1000 meter height. In itself a strangely beautiful place “in the middle of nowhere among the mountains”. With strange looking, hole-weathered, huge boulders, tall cliffs and stones. Many of them look like figures (alien, madonna, eagle, etc)

So, from there a photographer made photos of Etna’s 5th Paroxysm.... it is just so... ooooooaaaooooh !!!!!

Believe it or not, Etna started a 5th paroxysm just minutes before midnight (22-23 Feb 2021).

This intense activity is even surprising the experts.

Volcanologist Boris Behncke, of the national institute's Etna observation centre, said the volcano had been "gifting us moments of suspense" over the past few nights.

He wrote on the institute's website that Etna's final eruption happened in a way that "those of us who have worked in this for decades have rarely seen".

He tweeted on Tuesday: "Did I call the 20-21 February paroxysm of Etna 'incredibly powerful? Well, its successor, in the night of 22-23 February, was MUCH more powerful."

Spectacular Mount Etna eruption stuns volcano enthusiasts

I don’t know what to say...

but Etna is as of now, blowing her 6th Paroxysm into the air. It is truly mind boggling behavior and I can’t recall that she has ever behaved like this - with 6 Paroxysms within 9 days !!

My Sal send me one photo (somebody else made) of the latest eruption he could take hold of. The thermal images are from Italian INGV, volcano observatory. And after a couple days I am sure we likely gonna see beautiful images taken by photo enthusiasts (and I am thankful that they share them with the world openly !!)

Volcano Picnic ?

Just imagine. You drive to a viewpoint, with a nice coffee, cake or and sandwiches, together with a pal, friend or spouse... and you just enjoy the show in awe... just sitting there, no fiddling with the phone... just watching.... so unreal and yet real as presented in front of your eyes...

Some beautiful photos from Etna's 6th paroxysm

These I found/got I felt stood out a bit extra.

IMAGE 2021-02-25 23:01:10.jpg

In the third photo, my heart beats a little bit extra, because I have been walking on that street like... a hundred times since 2015 - and it feels like a second home to me (The plan was to move here, in about 8 years.... well now, we don't know how those plans will unfold. But anyway, who does know anything for sure these days). When you walk around in Catania, it seems to me as if you always end up back in the main street of Via Etnea.

So, the photographer took this photo in the City of Catania, East Sicily, at the main road of Via Etnea, at Piazza Universitá where you, when you go to the right side of the street - can see some of the Etna mountain towering in the background. The photographer managed to iron out the difference in contrast - between the bright street / street lights and the dark background with Etna, into a very realistic, beautiful way - which is how the naked eye perceives it (normally, the street is too bright to get everything "into the photo" getting either too dark background, the street too brightly / burned out white).

Seen from the Island of Lipari, 81 km away...

The blow photo I feel is a remarkable one - where the photographer took images during Etna's 5th Paroxysm (22-23 Feb 2021), showing you the view of Etna's Paroxysm from the island of Lipari, located 81 km (50 miles) away from Etna. Lipari belongs to the Aeolian Islands, all are of volcanic origin, located north of Sicily. In the photo you can spot the island of Vulcano to the left in the middle.

Beautiful photo, isn't it ? What a great time for people who are interested in nature photography...

ETNA TREMOR MONITORING LINK ->

If you like to watch/check Etna's TREMOR ACTIVITY yourself, I finally found the direct link to INGV's site showing that in graphs. You can still see the peaks of the Paroxysms from the past week, and who knows... Etna might prepare for a 7th Paroxysm (?) during daytime tomorrow ? (As of now, each Paroxysm had span of around 40 hours in between) Once the tremor level rises steeply - you can expect Mama Etna preparing serious fireworks.

Here, another link, to INGV monitoring page of Etna to see visual / Thermic images of the Crater Regions. Sometimes it can be difficult to determine what is going on at the top, then these images can be an assistance.

Etna goes 7th Paroxysm

It appeared out of the blue this morning - without any warning at around 09:03 - lasting less than 1 hour - and disappeared right after.
It was the shortest Paroxysm of all, in the recent series of 7. While the ash cloud was impressive during 20 minutes, peaking around 09:30 - but lava fountains were less pronounced. Lots of pressure, but little magma. Only a small lava stream was detected. Around 09.57 the show was already over.

In this moment at 12.00 EU time, mama Etna looks like an innocent kitten again. Some white puffy clouds (weather related) hanging at the top. The last three web photos below, look to me, were taken from north side of the Volcano (Randazzo or Linguaglossa), with the winds blowing the ash cloud towards the Ionian Sea, east of Sicily, but to the left in the photos.

Sinabung Volcano.
Sumatra - Indonesia

A nice time lapse of the eruption can be seen in this twitter by Magma Indonesia - which shows the dynamics of the pyroclastic cloud incredibly well ! According to VSI the ash clouds reached a max height of 5 km (16400 ft) above the volcano top. VAAC detected ash at level 12.2 km height (40000 ft). In total, 13 pyroclastic clouds rolled down the volcano today.

Etna Volcano. Sicily - Italy
With yes, the 8th Paroxysm

just happened. But it was more of an anticlimax, due to the overcast weather in the area, and now increased haziness for example in Catania, the biggest town 30 km to the south of the Volcano. The Tremor chart you see below as well two thermographic imagesfrom the Southeast crater at Etna with 2.5 hours difference in between

Harmonic tremor confirmed in Krýsuvík volcano – Eruption might be about to start

This article is written at 16:14 UTC. This is just a short update because the situation changes quickly.
Harmonic tremor has been detected in the Krýsuvík volcano. If an eruption happens as is now expected this is the first eruption in Krýsuvík volcano since the year 1340.
Harmonic tremor detected on SIL station Vogar.
