More about what exploded at Caspian Sea, it seems that it was Makarov Bank mud volcano

Was the Makarov Bank natural blowout, 1958, supersonic?
The blowout from the 20 km offshore mud volcano 'Makarov Bank', in the Caspian Sea, in November, 1958 caused a photo-documented jet reaching over 1 km into the atmosphere. The photograph is here shown.

On the 15th of November, 1958, a photographer in Baku took the unique photograph shown
below (courtesy of the Geological Institute of Azerbaijan). It depicts a natural hydrocarbon
eruption from Makarov Bank in the Caspian Sea, about 20 km offshore Baku.
This black/white photograph is taken from the city of Baku and shows a jet of burning gas and
liquids from a bright area about 20 km away, towards the Makarov Bank, a well-known
submerged mud volcano in the Caspian Sea
. According to the Geological Institute of
Azerbaijan, the jet was initially several km high. Later it stabilized at about 500m height, as
shown in the image. The upper flame is about 120 m wide. The volume of gas erupting during
this blowout was estimated to be: 300 million cubic metres (see Judd and Hovland, 2007, p.
337).
If the chamber, containing this gas is located one or more kilometres, under-ground, there is a
high likelihood that the velocity of this fluid jet is supersonic, i.e., more than 1260 km per
hour.

Mud volcanoes—the most important pathway for degassing deeply buried sediments

Abstract

This paper discusses the nature of the phenomenon of “mud volcanism” with respect to degassing of deeply buried sediments. Mud volcanoes are defined as geological structures and their main elements are described. Based on the nature of activity, mud volcanoes are grouped in to three main types and the relationship between each type and corresponding morphological expression is discussed. The presented up-to-date data of the world geographical distribution of mud volcanoes show that they approximate to 1800 individuals. A detail overview of geological environments in which they occur helps to deduce some necessary conditions for mud volcano formation. The basic mechanisms of mud volcano formation are discussed, specifically the fluid-pressure hypothesis, and some triggering events are identified. The most common investigation approach and some criteria for recognizing of a submarine mud volcano on side-scan sonar records and seismic sections are given. Mud volcanism in the Mediterranean Ridge (an accretionary complex) and Black Sea Abyssal Plane (a back ark basin with tectonic regime of extension) are described as case studies to show variety in morphology and common factors in development of mud volcanoes. The manifestation of continuous gas migration through mud volcanoes is clarified, and the attempt made to quantify the gas release shows that mud volcanoes are one of the significant natural sources of atmospheric methane emitting a total amount of about 10.3 to 12.6 Tg annually.

Etna • Sicily
6-7 July 2021 • Paroxysm 48

Around midnight, Etna had another short paroxysm, but appears to take a bit longer time in between each eruption. Boris Behncke who works as a volcanologist at INGV in Catania, but lives north of the city in Tremestrieri, published some photos. The last photo comes from my husband - in which he took a photo of the amount of ash that rained down in the middle of Catania city, 30 km from the mountain.

It must be a big hassle for people, especially who lives on the eastern flanks of Etna (Milo, Fornazzo, Giarre etc), cleaning the ash every time after a paroxysm (most of the ash comes down east of the volcano).

More ash closer to volcano

I got two more images of the ash fall from Etna’s latest paroxysm midnight 7th July, albeit here in Pedara, only 17 km away from Etna, the ash layer was a lot denser

So, Sal had to clean up prior teaching his gym classes in the open. Well… those extra kilos he gained in Stockholm during winter are been worked off now, thanks to mama Etna keeping him more busy than usual

RVK Newscast #115: The Odd Rhythm Of The Volcano & A Helicopter Dispute
Jul 7, 2021 RT / 19:31 min
The volcano has a new rhythm—meaning now we have to time our visits to see it in action. There’s also currently a dispute between the landowners of the volcano area and the helicopter companies. And the blue smog, or the volcanic smog, is pestering those in the city area, but still, the scientists are not sure how dangerous it really is.

The hot cloud that fell from #Merapi on July 8, 2021 at 09.55 WIB was recorded on a seismogram with an amplitude of 40 mm and a duration of 95 seconds. The sliding distance is 1,100 m to the southeast.

In the last 24 hours, through the monitoring systems of the Popocatepetl volcano, 47 exhalations of water vapor and gas were identified, sometimes accompanied by ash. In addition, 10 minutes of low amplitude tremor were recorded.

Additionally, a volcanotectonic earthquake was recorded yesterday at 4:54 p.m., with a magnitude of 3.0.

At the time of this report, the volcano is observed with a slight emission of water vapor and gas with a north-northwest direction

One can only imagine how amazed the ancient Mexicans were when they witnessed this astronomical phenomenon near their sacred mountain.

Surveillance cameras located in the Mexican state of Puebla captured last Sunday the moment when the Moon, Venus and Mars 'flew over' Popocatepetl, the second highest volcano in the country. The video shows how the celestial bodies 'descend' towards the mountain and 'disappear' in its crater before Popocatepetl spews out a column of smoke.

Activity of Etna, Stromboli, Suwanosejima, Nevado del Ruiz and Fagradalsfjall.
Published on July 15, 2021 by Bernard Duyck Posted in: # Volcanic news

From around 07:50 UTC on July 14, an increase in the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor of Etna is observed

From around 09:05 UTC, a resumption of Strombolian activity is observed at the level of the south-eastern crater of Etna. According to the forecast model, the volcanic ash produced by the current activity is dispersed in the NE direction.

The activity leads to an overflow of lava directed towards the SW around 10:40 am approximately.

At around 11:00 UTC, the INGV signaled the gradual passage of Strombolian activity towards the lava fountain stage.

At 12:30 UTC, the observatory reports that the analysis of the images of the CCTV cameras and the satellite shows that the eruptive cloud, from approximately 11:40 UTC, reached a height of more than 9000 m. asl. INGV personnel on the ground are also reporting the fallout from large bombs on the southern flank of the Bocca Nuova crater.

SEC fountaining ceases around 12:30 UTC. From the analysis of satellite images, it is observed that the volcanic cloud moved towards the NE and reached the Calabrian coast from 12:20 UTC.

INGV staff present in the field reported abundant fallout of lapilli ash and ash (thickness greater than 1 cm) in the Rocca Campana district. There are reports of volcanic ash and lapilli fallout at Rifugio Citelli and Presa and volcanic ash at Taormina.

The 50 ° paroxysm of Etna was particularly violent!

Unrest continues with periods of seismic tremor being observed over the past day. Elevated surface temperatures at the north cone of Mount Cerberus were observed in satellite images. Robust steaming was seen in high-spatial-resolution satellite data and was accompanied by SO2 gas emissions. No evidence of ash emissions were seen in satellite data and no explosive activity was detected on local infrasound sensors. The last explosive events were detected two days ago on July 12. Web cameras on the island were obscured by low clouds.

Small eruptions producing minor ash deposits within the vicinity of the active north crater of Mount Cerberus and ash clouds under 10,000 ft above sea level are typical of recent activity at Semisopochnoi. Small explosions may occur without warning and could be undetected by regional infrasound sensors and cloudy weather conditions.

A bit delayed, but sometimes I feel it is better to wait some time in order to collect interesting photos - otherwise it becomes too static. Usually the first images immediately after an eruption, aren't the greatest either.

A Sicilian phenomena

I have noticed among my husbands friends and students in Sicily, that many women are incredibly creative. I mean seriously creative, whether it is clothes, FOOD, cakes, home made greeting cards, paintings, dinner table, creation with wild flowers, anything and everything... It really was interesting to experience the variation, effort and enthusiasm among people... The island of Sicily - its people - seem to be lot about Do-it-your-self !

So, here is a lady, Giorgia Anastasi, who got inspired by the ash of Etna. Wow !

Paroxysm No 51
20 July 2021

This time a daytime eruption of Etna on 20 July 2021. From our family branch in Adrano, SW of the Etna Volcano, Sal's sister reported that in the morning while at church, Etna made loud roars and every time the chandeliers would shake. The photo's view appear looking towards Adrano and Paternò, so it was taken, what we think, from the southwest of the Volcano.
