What are you listening to?

987bazk,

Learning is fun and interesting too sometimes. I had never heard of J Tillman until you shared him with us. As I often do I listened to some of his other songs and discovered he is going through many changes as we all do I think.

He seems to be awakening out of monotheism having based his earlier work on Christian themes and now he is Father John Misty for the time-being.

One interview gives an idea of his journey reminding me of the depth and pain many artists and musicians share.

If it interests you here is the interview Father John Misty: Music heals pain on YouTube.

Thanks Gaby for the psalms in Aramaic and mariowil7 for the Donald Fagen What a Beautiful World which I always liked for the hopefully positive use of technology. The school has it's ups and downs for me and maybe that is as it should be.

Pure Country lyrics

The comedy of man starts like this
Our brains are way too big for our mothers' hips
And so Nature, she divines this alternative
We emerged half-formed and hope that whoever greets us on the other end
Is kind enough, oh, to fill us in
And, babies, that's pretty much how it's been ever since

Now the miracle of birth leaves a few issues to address
Like, say, that half of us are periodically iron deficient
So somebody's got to go kill something while I look after the kids
I'd do it myself, but what, are you going to get this thing its milk?
He says as soon as he gets back from the hunt, we can switch
Oh, it's hard not to fall in love with something so helpless
Oh, ladies, I hope we don't end up regretting this
C'mon, boys

Oh comedy, now that's what I call pure comedy
Just waiting until the part where they start to believe
They're at the center of everything
And some all-powerful being endowed this horror show with meaning
Oh comedy

Their religions are the best
They worship themselves yet they're totally obsessed
With risen zombies, celestial virgins, magic tricks, these unbelievable outfits
And they get terribly upset
When you question their sacred texts
Written by woman-hating epileptics

Their languages just serve to confuse them
Their confusion somehow makes them more sure
They build fortunes poisoning their offspring
And hand out prizes when someone patents the cure
Where did they find these goons they elected to rule them?
What makes these clowns they idolize so remarkable?
These mammals are hell-bent on fashioning some new gods
So they can go on being godless animals

Oh comedy, oh their illusions they have no choice but to believe
Their horizons that just forever recede
And how's this for irony, their idea of being free is a prison of beliefs
That they never ever have to leave

Oh comedy, oh it's like something that a madman would conceive!
The only thing that seems to make them feel alive is the struggle to survive
But the only thing that they request is something to numb the pain with
Until there's nothing human left
Just random matter suspended in the dark
Well I hate to say it, but each other's all we've got

I can't help but think that this song has an alternate meaning, and it might be Big Brother watching over us.

Lyrics:

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I'll be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
I'll be watching you

Oh can't you see
You belong to me
My poor heart aches
With every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I'll be watching you

Since you've gone I been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby, please

Oh can't you see
You belong to me
My poor heart aches
With every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I'll be watching you
Every move you make
Every step you take
I'll be watching you

I'll be watching you
(Every breath you take, every move you make, every bond you break, every step you take)
I'll be watching you
(Every single day, every word you say, every game you play, every night you stay)
I'll be watching you
(Every move you make, every vow you break, every smile you fake, every claim you stake)
I'll be watching you
(Every single day, every word you say, every game you play, every night you stay)
I'll be watching you
(Every breath you take, every move you make, every bond you break, every step you take)
I'll be watching you
(Every single day, every word you say, every game you play, every night you stay)
I'll be watching you

Cleo,

I told my son one time that I felt Metallica sounded very classical to me. I think the Apocalyptica group brings this out in their renditions. And the depth of Metallica's lyrics is interesting I think.

But then "That old man here is me.".

Metallica Lyrics
"The Unforgiven"

New blood joins this earth,
And quickly he's subdued.
Through constant pained disgrace
The young boy learns their rules.

With time the child draws in.
This whipping boy done wrong.
Deprived of all his thoughts
The young man struggles on and on he's known
A vow unto his own,
That never from this day
His will they'll take away.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never be.
Never see.
Won't see what might have been.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

They dedicate their lives
To running all of his.
He tries to please them all –
This bitter man he is.

Throughout his life the same –
He's battled constantly.
This fight he cannot win –
A tired man they see no longer cares.

The old man then prepares
To die regretfully –
That old man here is me.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never be.
Never see.
Won't see what might have been.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

[Solo]

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never be.
Never see.
Won't see what might have been.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

You labelled me,
I'll label you.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

You labelled me,
I'll label you.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

It sure is not just a "love and light" kind of music but I appreciate their talent (in measured doses :P). It's kind of like background music for a fight with the Nephilim but we can't just ignore 3D emotions I think.

Their skill for the genre is very disciplined and precise. Technically they shine I think and some of their lyrics (not all) tell the truth about the predator's mind. It's like a fight/flight reaction which is understandable but may not be the best answer in all cases.

Session 2 November 1994
Q: (L) I am assuming that if the Nephilim are 3 d that they die like we do. Is this correct?

A: Yes.

Q: (L) So, we can shoot them and they will die?

A: Correct. But wrong approach.

Q: (L) What is the right approach?

A: Knowledge protects.

Yeah, I can't say that I really listen to any of the"heavy' stuff much anymore, I was a big fan in my youth, but I seem to have grown out of it now. It's interesting to see how tastes evolve along with us, I think this kind of music served its purpose for me, allowed me to vent my anger etc, but now I prefer more tranquil/soothing music.

Speaking of tranquil :)
