What are you listening to?

Okay, so I don't know how this might be received. When I was a kid, I had a neighbor friend who lived behind me who played drums. I became interested in playing the drums towards the end of elementary school. I entered the band program in the 6th grade when I entered junior high school. By the time I was in the 8th grade I was in both orchestra and band. My first year in high school I beat out the seniors through UIL competition to reach 2nd chair symphonic regional band on tympani. They were not so happy for me.

Then I went to Texas Tech and entered the marching band there where I challenged a sophomore for an active position on the drum line playing the triple drums which I duly won from him. He was not so happy.

The next year I went to North Texas State and entered the music program for a year. I don't really play anymore, but the point of telling you all that was to emphasize that what I really enjoy listening to has a lot to do with the drumming. And let's face it, there's not allot of killer drumming going on in the more subtle forms of music. Although, I can honestly say that I'm beginning to really appreciate more sublime forms of music as well.

The following falls under the category of progressive metal. I wouldn't necessarily call it that myself. If it were up to me, I would call it artistic rock. This English band formed in 2007 and now has five albums. This from their latest album:

This is Haken
Puzzle Box

Latent memories forming deep inside of me
Dormant barren visceral senses now subdued
No escape. I navigate through my cave
Beneath the skin. They keep us in night and day

Parasite - Leech upon the guilt from all my wrongs
(Lead me on a pathway to the core)
Paralysed - Staring through the shadows on the wall
(Unable to solve this puzzle box)

The journey's long, the shadows dance around
The answer lies beyond the fourth wall
My future days are etched into my skull
Hanging ever by a tethered body, mind and soul

Parasite - Leech upon the guilt from all my wrongs
(Lead me on a pathway to the core)
Paralysed - Staring through the shadows on the wall
(Unable to solve this puzzle box)

Truth or deception? I lose all perception inside

A fleeting sense of self worth evaporates into nothingness
A tepid grip on myself melts away to oblivion

Shadows on the wall dance around
Reflections in the amber to be found
A puppet on a string soon unwound
The truth inside the cave soon to be unbound
The path beyond the mountain led me here
The answer crystallised in history
But now the cracks of time begin to show
We lift the veil on what the future holds
The torture of entrapment ever grows
And now I'm waiting for the afterglow
A beast inside of me awakening
Alas the consequences of my sins
Shadows on the wall dance around
Reflections in the amber to be found
A puppet on a string soon unwound
The truth inside the cave soon to be unbound

Parasites as thick as thieves
Paralysed my golden wings

Bouncing off the walls
Latent memories erupting
Pulling at the cord
Earth beneath my feet is trembling
Lightning cracks the sky
'Wakening the beast inside me
Rawness in his eyes
Reeking stench of fear and regret

Cause and consequence
Show me reverence
Fate or circumstance?
I feel severance
Lightning cracks the sky
Eyes intensify
I will stay trapped inside

How can truth set us free when lies are all we have?
How can time heal us when our days are running out?

Living in a world of duality is complex I think.

Joni Mitchell is often creates songs that are what I think of as complex/deep.
Found this song I liked:

Shadow and Light

Every picture has its shadows
And it has some source of light
Blindness blindness and sight
The perils of benefactors
The blessings of parasites
Blindness blindness and sight
Threatened by all things
Devil of cruelty
Drawn to all things
Devil of delight
Mythical devil of the ever-present laws
Governing blindness blindness and sight

Suntans in reservation dining rooms
Pale miners in their lantern rays
Night night and day
Hostage smile on presidents
Freedom scribbled in the subway
It's like night night and day
Threatened by all things
God of cruelty
Drawn to all things
God of delight
Mythical devil of the ever-present laws
Governing day day and night

Critics of all expression
Judges in black and white
Saying it's wrong saying it's right
Compelled by prescribed standards
Or our own ideals we fight
For wrong wrong and right
Threatened by all things
Man of cruelty-mark of Cain
Drawn to all things
Man of delight-born again born again
Man of the laws the ever-broken laws
Governing wrong wrong and right
Governing wrong wrong and right
Wrong and right

"To Build a Home"; one of the "Cinematic Orchestra"s most popular songs. A beautiful piece of music with a very touching video.
