The theme is that of Kefka, a deranged, nihilistic psycho (in both senses), who usurps the three forces governing the world, unbalances them (throwing the world into chaos, rearranging its very surface, and leaving a world barely alive where nothing can grow), and becomes like a "God", amusing himself with frying the remaining inhabitants with his "Light of Judgement".

I have found that, at any rate for me, Kefka seems to work well as a metaphor for the Predator's Mind. It has taken over the inner world, usurped and unbalanced the three centers (throwing the inner world into chaos, rearranging it, and leaving it barely alive and a place where nothing of essence can grow), proclaims itself "I", and amuses itself with passing egotistic judgment.


The musical piece is quite unusual. Continuing my metaphorical interpretation (quite subjective, but made the piece of use for me), I see the first part as describing the tragedy of the rule of the Predator's Mind; the second part describes dramatically how it engages in the same; the third part with its deep, warm organ sound and melody describes the beginning of the heating of the crucible and disintegration; the fourth part describes first its raging and struggle, then the inevitability of its death and dissolution, and how it still doesn't give up.

There are no vocals, it's a purely instrumental song ... at almost 17 minutes to boot! But has bouts of pure musical beauty. John Petrucci on guitars is considered one of the best guitarists in the world, sitting next to the likes of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. Jordan Rudess on piano is amazing too, sometimes its hard to tell if some of the solo's are on piano or guitar.
