I dare say I'm not the first one to cite this song but, man, it is spine chilling.
"Masters of War" by Bob Dylan.
It's got such a simple, insistent little guitar riff, reminding me of both "Street Spirit" by Radiohead and "Revolution Blues" by Neil Young, but the atmosphere created by the song! Wonderful. The album it's from, "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan", has some other genuinely moving classics, like "It's a Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall" and "Talkin' World War 3 Blues". It's really beautiful how rediscovering music from your past can help to recapitulate memories.
Here's to you Bob! And what a fine lyric, "and they hide behind words, and they hide behind desks, I just want you to know I can see through your masks". There's real vengeance to the way he makes this statement, and the tone of the whole song is one of calm controlled fury in the eye of menace.
At least that's how I hear the lyric anyway. I've just purchased it again after a gap of some 13 years. It will be essential walking music for the coming months.
