What are you listening to?

I like this piano version of Trent Reznor's Hurt. It was performed as part of a Hurricane Katrina fundraiser, and I think it's kind of neat how he took a song that was originally written for himself "as a way of staying sane", and turned it outward for the benefit of others.

It was also immortalized by Johnny Cash -- he covered the song in 2002, a year before the death of his wife June Carter, four months after which Johnny himself finally let go. A lot of people consider it his epitaph.

I LOVE Johnny Cash and especially that cover. These images of him and his family are so touching and beautiful. I once watched a documentary about him and all these bits of family videos were in it and you could really see how his family was so fond of him and him of them.

Thanks for that, Shijing!

Just one of my favorite pop songs from the 80's.

Die Prinzen - Alles nur geklaut
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH4nPMUt7EU

Lyrics:

ALLES NUR GEKLAUT

Ich schreibe einen Hit,
die ganze Nation kennt ihn schon,
alle singen mit,
ganz laut im Chor, das geht ins Ohr.
Keiner kriegt davon genug,

Ich will dich gern verführ'n,

English:

All Just Stolen

I write a hit song,
the whole nation already knows it,
everyone is singing along,
real loud in the chorus; that sounds good.
No one can get enough of it,
everyone thinks I'm clever,
I hope no one notices the fraud.

Because it's all just stolen,
none of it's mine,
it's all just stolen,
but I'm the only one who knows,
it's all just stolen
and lifted,
just copied
and robbed.
Sorry, I took the liberty.

I'm filthy rich,
I drive a Benz that sparkles in the sun.
I have a large pond,
and in front of it a palace and a white steed;
I'm a big hero,
and I travel around the world,
I'm getting better looking through my money.

And it's all just stolen...

I want very much to seduce you,
but then I notice:
that won't be easy for me.
I go walking with you
and recite a poem to your face.
I say, I wrote it just for you,
and then you kiss me;
I'm lucky that you don't know:

It's all just stolen...

On your halo
I don't even shine any more,
because you still have, thank God,
something upstairs for sure.

And it's all just stolen,
none of it's yours,
it's all just stolen,
but you're the only one who knows,
it's all just stolen
and lifted,
just copied
and robbed.
Who allowed you the liberty?
Who allowed you the liberty?

SONG BACKGROUND

One of PRINZEN's earlier hit songs, "Alles nur geklaut" is a humorous reflection on how an artist's work may not always be original, and how that can affect a relationship. The German verb "klauen" is slang for "steal" or "lift."

Stone Roses 'Elephant Stone'

Their music just make me feel great!

Burst into heaven
Kissing the cotton clouds
Arctic sheets and fields of wheat
I can’t stop coming down
Your shrunken head
Looking down on me above
Send me home like an elephant stone
To smash my dream of love
Dreaming till the sun goes down
And night turns into day
Rooms are empty i’ve got plenty
You could move in right away

It seems like there’s a hole
In my dreams
In my dreams
In my dreams

Down through the heavens

Choke on the cotton clouds
Arctic sheets and fields of wheat
I can’t stop coming down
Your shrunken head
Looking down on me above
Send me home like an elephant stone
To smash my dream of love

Did your bed and bookshelf go
And run run run away
These four walls saw the rise and fall
And your midnight getaway
Seems like there’s a hole
In my dreams
Or so it seems
Yet nothing means anything
Anymore

Queensryche - Silent Lucidity

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LniY0pDQGaE

I love strings - real or synthetic doesn't matter. This particular song has a bit of a build up between 2:55-3:22 and specifically from 3:23-3:52 that I adore. I have yet to discover how many times I can listen to the same song and still get goosebumps. Every. Single. Time.

Note: Lyrics and band trivia embedded in the video.

Hush now don't you cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye

You're lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
Spinning in your head

Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game
Of life

So here it is, another chance
Wide awake, you face the day
Your dream is over...

Or has it just begun?

There's a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run through in the night

Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize
And you were scared

It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind

Commanding in another world
Suddenly, you'll hear and see
This magic new dimension

I
Will be watching over you
I
am gonna help you see it through
I
Will protect you in the night
I am smiling next to you

In silent lucidity...

(Solo) 2:55-3:22

Spoken: 3:19-3:52
Visualize your dream (Yes)
Record it in the present tense (Don't be scared)
Put it into a permanent form
If you persist in your efforts
You can achieve a dream come true
(Control)
(How're you doing today?) (Better?)

Dream control
Dream control
Dream control

Hug me...

If you open your mind for me
You won't rely on open eyes to see

The walls you built within
Come tumbling down
And a new world will begin

Living twice at once you learn
You're safe from pain in the dream domain
A soul set free to fly

A round trip journey in your head
Master of illusion, can you realize?
Your dream's alive, you can be the guide but...

I
Will be watching over you
I am gonna help you see it through
I
Will protect you in the night
I am smiling next to you...

This is one of my favorites too -- thanks for posting :)

Speaking of goosebumps, there are these songs by Maynard James Keenan about his mother, Judith Marie. She was a very religious person who suffered a stroke when she was close to 30, which left her wheelchair-bound and partially paralyzed. This only served to increase her faith, which Maynard found ironic and very conflicted about. He wrote the first song below, Judith, as an expression of this.

Some years after this, Judith suffered complications from an aneurysm and ultimately died. Maynard wrote the following two songs at the time of her death, where he accepted this paradox about his mother when he finally had to say good-bye. Judith was paralyzed for 27 years, or about 10,000 days, which is the inspiration for the title of the final song (which was unfortunately too long to post as a single video, and had to be split into two parts).

Judith

You're such an inspiration
For the ways that I will
Never, ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How your savior has abandoned you

F*** your God, your Lord, your Christ
He did this, took all you had and
Left you this way, still you pray, never stray, never
Taste of the fruit, never thought to question "Why?"

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed

He did it all for you...

Oh so many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you

Pray to your Christ, to your God
Never taste of the fruit, never stray, never break, never
Choke on a lie even though he's the one who
Did this to you, you never thought to question "Why?"

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side
Talk to Jesus Christ as if he knows the reasons why

He did it all for you...

Wings for Marie

You...
You believed ...
You believed in movements none could see.
You believed in me

A passionate spirit
Uncompromised
Boundless and open
A light in your eyes
Then immobilized.

Broken
Fell at the hands of those movements that I wouldn't see
Yet it was you who prayed for me.
So what have I done
To be a son to an angel?
What have I done
To be worthy?

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence
Difficult to see you in this light
Please forgive this selfish question, but
What am I to say to all these ghouls tonight?
"She never told a lie,
... well might have told a lie,
But never lived one.
Didn't have a life,
Didn't have a life,
But surely saved one."
See? I'm alright
Now it's time for us to let you go.

10,000 Days (1)
10,000 Days (2)

Listen to the tales and romanticize,
How we'd follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun.
How we rise to the height of our halo.

Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior,
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations;
None of us have actually been there.
Not like you.

Ignorant flippants in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy,
Spare me.
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see.

But, enough about the collective Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who
Illuminated your little piece of the divine?

And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me;
I'm gonna let it shine to guide you safely on your way,
Your way home ...

Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly?

High is the way, but all eyes are upon the ground.
You were the light and the way they'll only read about.
I only pray, Heaven knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
You're going home.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I've come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my, give me my wings!"

You are the light and way that they will only read about.

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
(With the) burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion, but
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home."

I am definetely very fond of A Perfect Circle and Tool.
Been listening to Thirteenth step recently again, I just play one song then suddenly I am listening to the whole album again.

Although I don't really know what to think of Maynard James Keenan as a person.

That's really funny -- I dug it out yesterday, and did exactly the same thing after not having listened to it for years. It's one of those rare albums where almost every song is good.

He's an interesting guy -- he definitely has issues, but he seems to realize it and writes about them honestly and voluminously. He's had a longstanding problem with fan stalkers, and he changed his name so that his son wouldn't have to deal with the same problem -- he apparently uses a paintball gun to chase unwanted visitors away from his house :)

Yes for sure.
I'd be curious to have something like the Laurel Canyon serie for some 90's band :)

Cycles within cycles, i have been going thru a lost love reconnected cycle and even though i know we were man and wife in a past life, i dont think its going to happen in this one.

But i cant stop the memories from pouring in.
dams break open similiar to Eirie Eolas oceans of joy and happiness, and peace. and tears, and this ache, god this ache in my soul so bad. when we were young in this life i visited her in florida and when it was time for me to go back home, we held each other for what seemed like forever, both of us in deep holding of the other not wanting to be apart. tears aplenty just couldnt let the other go.
then when she came up to michigan on her summer break when i started college and she had to go, the same thing, hard real hard to let her go again.
the moments and days we spent together before our departure dates were timeless. she has told me over and over that she is shocked by her own feelings for me, she said one time when we kissed it was absolutely electric, unforgettable and when we stopped for a moment and i said did you feel that?? she said it scared her - that i felt it too.
i remember and feel so many things, a flood of past memories with this woman.
she calls we talk for hours, i email she emails back.
even after reading for days and nights on this forum. when i apply what i have learned too too her, i cant figure it out. unholy hungers trapped in a mirror, i read em, but i just phh, am truly at a loss for more knowledge with this lady.
i asked her once to marry me 20 some yrs ago, and got a very gentle no she is 2yrs older, and now upon reconnection, i didnt waste much time with asking her in a direct way what if, again, i couldnt stop myself from asking her again, i was so floored by all these feelings and images, even with what i do know now. i just know ~it may not be now. but we are supposed to think in limitless terms.
im a bit at a loss for alot of knowledge~

hey so when in rome, eh ;)

VNV Nation - The Farthest Star

Powerful song, powerful video :)

VNV Nation - The Farthest Star

The will to greatness clouds the mind
Consumes the senses, veils the signs
We each are meant to recognize.
Redeeming graces cast aside
Enduring notions, new found promise,
That the end will never come.

We live in times when all seems lost,
But time will come when we'll look back,
Upon ourselves and on our failings.

Embrace the void even closer still,
Erase your doubts as you surrender everything:

We possess the power,
If this should start to fall apart,
To mend divides,
To change the world,
To reach the farthest star.
If we should stay silent.
If fear should win our hearts,
Our light will have long diminished,
Before it reaches the farthest star.

Wide awake in a world that sleeps
Enduring thoughts, enduring scenes.
The knowledge of what is yet to come.
From a time when all seems lost,
From a dead man to a world.
Without restraint, unafraid and free.

We possess the power,
If this should start to fall apart,
To mend divides,
To change the world,
To reach the farthest star.
If we should stay silent.
If fear should win our hearts,
Our light will have long diminished,
Before it reaches the farthest star.

If we fall and break,
All the tears in the world cannot make
us whole
Again.

We possess the power,
If this should start to fall apart,
To mend divides,
To change the world,
To reach the farthest star.
If we should stay silent.
If fear should win our hearts,
Our light will have long diminished,
Before it reaches the farthest star.
