What are you listening to?

The Battle of Evermore, by Led Zeppelin, featuring UK Folk heroine Sandy Denny on backing vocals. Lovely song. Also, I dunno if Stairway has had a shout out on this thread. Yes it's an ubiquitous song, but it's still a masterful composition both musically and lyrically. Four Sticks also is a brilliant alternative piece, clever drumming and a swampy vibe with passionate soaring vocals from Plant. Listen without prejudice. Finally I add the final track, When the Levee Breaks, which is a mighty maelstrom of a song. Taken from a 1930's song, it becomes something of awful wonder in the hands of these guys, powerful tragic blues. Easily, Led Zeppelin IV as an album makes my top 20 all time list. Bought it first in 1996, loved it ever since. It's been thoroughly energising listening to Zep today, after following the tragedy in Gaza this month. I guess I needed to let off some steam, Zep provided the means. For about 6 years these guys were on top of the world. And 3 of the quartet are still alive to tell the tale, which has gotta be a good thing.

Three final Zeppelin tracks then I'm done. The first is a radical reworking of a Bob Dylan track, blistering blues. The others showcase the band's versatility in sound as a band. They could easily bring up a ballad as much as an out and out rock song. Very technically competent, and capable of great leaps in improvisation when performing live. It's been energising listening to this music tonight!:cool2: I think they have good hearts. RIP the great drummer, John Bonham, dead but never forgotten. He was hard, but he always sought the swing.

One last triplet from Zeppelin, then I'm calling it a night. Apparently Beatle George Harrison opined that Zeppelin ought to make a ballad of some sort, so they wrote The Rain Song, The other tracks showcase their knowledge of light and shade dynamics. No Quarter has gotten me through many dark nights of the soul. I wish Jimmy Page had made more music as well, I guess he was happy with his earlier output. I have the first 6 Zeppelin Cds, they sit on top of my "most played" section, lol.:cool2:

Nice selection! I really have no words for Led Zeppelin's No quater song, the way it starts, so dark and low and then it explodes with grace and rock! 🤘in a sort of ying yang kind of way. The voice is also expressing everything like a true force, I don't really know what was going on in their lives when writing this song but they transmitted those feelings somehow and they created a strong thing (or so I think).

Here is a version of Kashmir 😎

I had forgiven you for tricking me again
But I have been tricked again,
Into forgiving you,

What is this? Are you some kind of hypnotist?
Waving your powers around - the sun eclipse behind the cloud

I thought I recognized your face
Amongst all of those strangers,

But I am the stranger now
Amongst all of the recognized

What is this, are you some kind of hypnotist?
Waving your powers around, the sun eclipse behind the cloud

For some reason this song made me think of Gurdjieff alarm clocks analogy and all the times you go back to sleep because you get used to the alarm and then when you realise about it you're like: What it is this? are you some kind of hypnotist? Because for some reason you can't see things clearly and it is like a sun eclipse behind the cloud.

It's one of my favourite songs, and there are loads of different live versions of it, much of which is wholly improvised. I got stressed out just following the war in Gaza this last few weeks, so I spent the whole of last night smoking a cigar and listening just to Zeppelin! It was cathartic. If ever things get too intense for me I turn to my record collection and blow all the cobwebs out of my mind. Between 1969-75 they were in my opinion the finest rock n' roll band in the world. Not to everyone's tastes (I am friends with folk who dismiss them entirely), but if you like dynamic, expansive, experimental rock music, then they're just perfect! Guitarist/producer Jimmy Page said in an interview years ago that what was key in his recordings was the importance of creating a sense of atmosphere in the music. I think he succeeded. A wonderful guitarist, just a shame he had that obsession with Aleister Crowley. Still, one of my favourite bands of all time.

So giving all the love you have
Never be afraid to show your heart
So giving all the love you have
There is a special reason
A special reason
In the big dream
We are heroes
We are dreamers
Of the big dream
Someone told me
There are brothers
Live forever
In the big sky
Just hear your voice
Sing all the songs of the earth
Nothing can come between us
You're a brother of mine
Sing out your sisters
All the dreams of the world
Nothing can come between us
We are the travellers of time
See the desert
We have walked the path
Of all the known religions
In the big dream
We are brothers, we are sisters
Of the big dream
Just hear your voice
Sing all the songs of the earth
Nothing can come between us
You're a brother of mine
Sing out your sisters
All the dreams of the world
Nothing can come between us
Took me by surprise
It opened up my eyes
I can't believe we're ready to
Run another
Run another
Run another
Fourth Dimension Dream
All the way it seems
I can't believe we're running to
See the world for what it really is
In the full moon
Took me by surprise
It opened up my eyes
I can't believe we're ready to
Run another
Run another
Run another
Fourth dimension dream
Always the way it seems
Just hear the voice
In all the songs of the earth
Nothing can come between us
You're a brother of mine
We hold our hands together
Be the sunshine
Nothing can come between us
You're a sister of time
Just hear the voice
Sing all the songs of the earth
Nothing can come between us
Nothing can come between us
Nothing can come between us
So give it all the love you have
Never be afraid to show your heart
So giving all the love you have
There is a special reason to come true
So giving all the love you have
Never be afraid to show your heart
So giving all the love you have
There is a special reason
There is a special reason this time
Long lost brother of mine
Seeing my life for the first time
Long lost brother of mine
Living my life in the dig dream
Long lost brother of mine
Walking away from illusion
Long lost brother of mine
Seeing my life for the first time
Long lost brother of mine
Seeing me fly like an eagle
Long lost brother of mine
Watching me walk in the full moon
Long lost brother of mine
Seeing my life for the first time
Long lost brother of mine
Walking this dream everlasting
So it's there
Putting one into one special reason
So it's there
Putting one into one
One another. Sure can. Sure can
This is a further dimension
Coming at us for the very first time
It's the second attention
Realising it all of the time
Re-defining this long lost passion
For the living we're in
This will be the first of many
I be telling you
Long lost brother of mine
Walking the dream evolution
Long lost brother of mine
Singing the sisters of freedom
Long lost brother of mine
Seeing the fathers of wisdom
Long lost brother of mine
Seeing my life for the first time
So it's there, but to want it to one special reason
Yes it's there, but to want it to want one another
So it's there, but to want it to one special reason
Yes it's there, you can see what you want to see
Long lost brother of mine

Still pertinent even today…

The sparks of the tempest rage a hundred years on
The voice of the dreamer screams, the cause of the pawn
The King and the Queen are gone, each piece is the same
The difference between us is a part of the game

Darkness is spreading like a spot on the sun
The dead are the living in age of the gun
While everyone clamors for the justice they seek
The world is corrupted and the strong take the weak

They mold you and shape you, they watch what you do
The sparks of the tempest are burnin' you through
Spreading like wildfire, fallin' like rain
Though they may promise, they only bring pain

The future is managed, and your freedom's a joke
You don't know the difference as you put on the yoke
The less that you know, more you fall into place
A cog in the wheel, there is no soul in your face

Run for the cover, Millennium's here
Bearing the standard of confusion and fear
Spreading like wildfire, fallin' like rain
Though they may promise, they only bring pain

Blood in the sand, cry in the street
Now the cycle is nearly complete
Ten thousand years, nothing was learned
No turning back, now the wheel has turned

Big brother is watching and he likes what he sees
A world for the taking, when he's ready to squeeze
King and the Queen are gone, each piece is the same
The difference between us is a part of the game

Soothsayer saying now tell me no lies
What is the madness that is filling the skies
Spreading like wildfire, fallin' like rain
Though they may promise, they only bring pain

The Beatles - Now And Then

Now and Then's eventful journey to fruition took place over five decades and is the product of conversations and collaborations between the four Beatles that go on to this day. The long mythologised John Lennon demo was first worked on in February 1995 by Paul, George and Ringo as part of The Beatles Anthology project but it remained unfinished, partly because of the impossible technological challenges involved in working with the vocal John had recorded on tape in the 1970s. For years it looked like the song could never be completed. But in 2022 there was a stroke of serendipity. A software system developed by Peter Jackson and his team, used throughout the production of the documentary series Get Back, finally opened the way for the uncoupling of John’s vocal from his piano part. As a result, the original recording could be brought to life and worked on anew with contributions from all four Beatles. This remarkable story of musical archaeology reflects The Beatles’ endless creative curiosity and shared fascination with technology. It marks the completion of the last recording that John, Paul and George and Ringo will get to make together and celebrates the legacy of the foremost and most influential band in popular music history.
I know it's true
It's all because of you
And, if I make it through
It's all because of you

And, now and then
If we must start again
Well, we will know for sure
That I will love you

Now and then
I miss you
Oh, now and then
I want you to be there for me
Always to return to me

I know it's true
It's all because of you
And, if you go away
I know you'll never stay

Now and then
I miss you
Oh, now and then
I want you to be there for me

I know it's true
It's all because of you
And, if I make it through
It's all because of you

Naseer Shamma performs Al Amariya (1992) and broadcasted over Lebanon's Future TVThe significance of the Al Amariya piece is that it is a composition that Naseer wrote in dedication to the victims of the Al-Amariya attack, a US air strike which targeted a shelter in Iraq, ultimately killing scores of civilians including men women and children that were taking shelter during the invasion of Iraq. Naseer was one of the witnesses of this ferocious attack and later visited the site and composed the piece inside the shelter. The song clearly revives those haunting moments, mimicking the sound of shelling and airstrikes and the echos of innocent Iraqis who paid the ultimate price.
