Supertramp - "Take the Long Way Home"

I used to hear a lot of Supertramp when I was a kid, on the radio in the car or just around home. This song really takes me back to that time and just a general longing to find my way home.
From Wikipedia -
"Take the Long Way Home" is the fourth single and sixth track of Supertramp's 1979 album Breakfast in America. It was the last song written for the album, being penned during the nine-month recording cycle. According to its composer Roger Hodgson, the song deals with how the desire to go home can go both ways:

"I'm talking about not wanting to go home to the wife, take the long way home to the wife because she treats you like part of the furniture, but there's a deeper level to the song, too. I really believe we all want to find our home, find that place in us where we feel at home, and to me, home is in the heart and that is really, when we are in touch with our heart and we're living our life from our heart, then we do feel like we found our home."

So you think you're a Romeo
playing a part in a picture-show
Take the long way home
Take the long way home

Cos you're the joke of the neighborhood
Why should you care if you're feeling good
Take the long way home
Take the long way home

But there are times that you feel you're part of the scenery
all the greenery is comin' down, boy
And then your wife seems to think you're part of the
furniture oh, it's peculiar, she used to be so nice.

When lonely days turn to lonely nights
you take a trip to the city lights
And take the long way home
Take the long way home

You never see what you want to see
Forever playing to the gallery
You take the long way home
Take the long way home

And when you're up on the stage, it's so unbelievable,
unforgettable, how they adore you,
But then your wife seems to think you're losing your sanity,
oh, calamity, is there no way out?

Does it feel that you life's become a catastrophe?
Oh, it has to be for you to grow, boy.
When you look through the years and see what you could
have been oh, what might have been,
if you'd had more time.

So, when the day comes to settle down,
Who's to blame if you're not around?
You took the long way home
You took the long way home...........

20 years ago to a day, two explosions in the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk resulted in the sinking of the vessel in the Barents Sea. All 118 crew died, most of them directly in the explosions, but 23 were locked for several long hours in sealed compartments.

In memory of the sailors.

The Kursk
It's cold I'm afraid
It's been like this for a day
The water is rising and slowly we're dying
We won't see a light again
We won't see our wives again

This is Dancers by Warp Records veterans Plaid. They are Bjork's favourite band apparently, and they make very ornate, counterpoint-laden electronica. All the music they make is done on software on a computer, absolutely no actual synthesizers. I've been an avid follower of their music since the mid-90's, they always seem to sound about a decade ahead of their time.

This is another track by Plaid, called Eyen. I love this piece. Long may they continue to innovate with software, one of the UK's best cult bands.

Today is:

The useless me is falling apart
The heart is covered with wounds, hidden tears are stinging
Everyone is like that in the beginning
But you can't give up, make sure you come along

I can't have any self-confidence at all
My heart starts beating and I can't be relied on
I close my eyes as if praying FIRE (FIRE) FIRE (FIRE)
Now my life will burn brightly!

*Without stopping love, I will continue to run
Until the light I embrace in my heart starts to shine
RIDE ON (RIDE ON) RIDE ON (RIDE ON) RIDE ON (RIDE ON)
RIDE ON (RIDE ON) RIDE ON (RIDE ON) RIDE ON (RIDE ON)

Because the dream I see is too far
I breathe a sigh, but I won't lose, I'll do my best
I don't need a dream that's good enough
That I can catch easily, without any effort. Isn't that right?

The earnest feelings will surely come true
Believe in yourself, to the end of the universe
The endless journey that begins now HIGHER (HIGHER) HIGHER (HIGHER)
Now aim for the top

*repeat x3
