What supplements do you take?

I've been working on a detox plan for a while and because I have an appointment with a nutritionist and acupuncturist on Wednesday, I sat down and wrote everything out to see what I had. Iarrthoir Firinne, you are right... it does look scary when it's all listed. But it helps keep up with changes and I hope to be feeling better sometime around next year.

<snip>

My god, woman! I don't want to be too critical, as we all choose whatever supplements for ourselves as we all individually have the perfect right to do, because we each own our body and our own lives, but... you might step back and take an objective look at what all you're loading into your body daily.

You listed totals for identifiable vitamins at the end of your post, but if you were to list everything and include those supplements that don't specify precisely what they contain, the list would be quite long.

I can't imagine that the nutritionist you plan to visit next week won't be horrified to see the full list of all the supplements you're taking. I expect that if he or she is honest with you, they will express that to you.

I'll have to say that I believe it's good that you are seeking professional advice about nutrition, detoxing, etc.

Griffin, your post isn't helpful, especially the "My God, woman" and the part about a nutritionist being "horrified." The things KristinLynne are taking looks pretty good, just expensive to me, but I don't see anything that would cause harm. Just some things that might not be necessary with the right diet and some things that cost more than necessary (the Dr. Mercola formulations).

If you have something specific to say about why certain things might be harmful then say so, but to say that because the list is long it's "horrifying" isn't saying anything useful.

One thing to be careful with if you take a lot of different supplements regularly is the dose of magnesium stearate that you may be receiving. It is toxic, but it makes the machinery run better so they put it in anyway. You can sometimes find formulations without it, but they tend to be more expensive.

While the dose of magnesium stearate in any one supplement may be at a "safe" level for an "average" person, when you take a bunch of different ones together or take large doses it is not that hard to overdose. This has been discussed previously. One place to start is here.

Just remember your body/liver has to process all those supplements and the toxins released. So see how you are handling them, and if you feel worse, perhaps go a bit slower and don't overload your body. If you seem to be experiencing any improvement, then you are probably fine.

Also, I would see what's in the Mercola products and try and buy whatever it is elsewhere as he is expensive. Try to get supplements wihout a lot of fillers. Sometimes I try and research via google who makes the Mercola stuff (as I think he just puts his name on somebody else's product) and try to buy it through them. :)

Griffin, this is a temporary plan not to be taken indefinitely and it was based on a lot of research that members of this forum had already done. I'm trying to get up to speed with my research as well and you may want to read Detoxify or Die by Sherry Rogers MD. After months of reading and testing each supplement I am now ready to get down to business and clean my machine.

Thanks Mr. Premise and as a side note the DR. Mercola stuff was a one time thing until I could find the right things locally... or else where on line. Before I had no idea what most of the supplements were or did and was thinking that if I found some that were good and as pure as possible, it would give me an idea of what to look for when replacing it with the next one. And yes it is all expensive but I have learned so much! All thanks to you guys here!!!

Thanks Megan for bringing that up too about the magnesium stearate. That's another reason I read everything and then wrote it down... it sure beats trying to read the tiny print over and over. :) But I still have a lot more to incorporate into the plan and thanks for that link too.

Edit spelling

Thanks Mrs Peel. The liver is very important and so far so good. I do take breaks with the supplements to give my body a rest too, but if I posted the whole plan, it would have taken up a lot more room here. :) I hope to do a good liver and gallbladder flush soon too but wanted to make sure the parasites (if any) were gone first.

You are so right about researching the ingredients too. I've spent a lot of time at the health food store just reading labels and asking a lot of questions.

Okay, perhaps I could have expressed my response in more tentative and supportive language, but those were my honest reactions. Taking 75-83 supplements daily, some multiple times, immediately struck me as nothing short of extreme, and the sheer number and volume of them really alarmed me.

I'll admit that my initial response was a bit abrupt, and I apologize to KristinLynne and the forum for that. However I believe that my concerns are reasonable, so let me explain them a little more fully.

You, Megan and Mrs. Peel articulated some of the concerns that I almost instinctively had with that program, in terms of fillers that can be toxic in large doses, potential for overloading the liver (and possibly other organs), therapeutic value for money and total cost.

One aspect that hasn't been mentioned is the potential for synergistic effects of multiple compounds on some biological systems. The human body is an amazingly complex biological system of systems, and I believe that subjecting it to an onslaught of supplements in such a shotgun approach might not be helpful and could, in some unknown circumstances, be counterproductive and harmful.

Another thing that strikes me about this regimen is that it apparently involves taking many various supplements four or five times a day, which means that the body must process those almost continuously. Yes, there are 'heavy' and 'medium' days and six hours of sleep a night, it seems, as well as occasional fasting. However, it appears that many days are mostly spent taking supplements.

I am not a dietician or nutritional researcher and don't claim any special insight, but sayings in favor of moderation are littered throughout philosophies and religions. It is possible that there's something to it.

Well, here's what I take faithfully every day.
As well as following fairly closely the paleo diet with lots of butter. Although I do like my broccoli and brussel sprouts, well-steamed to mushiness.
Vit D3 capsules, 10,000IUs
Krill oil capsules, 1000mgs
Astaxanthin gel caps, 8mgs
Ubiquinol capsules (can't remember amnt), 2 capsules-for my heart, about 3 weeks out of four.

As well, since last July, I take a cold shower pretty well every morning.
Do weight training three days a week and get around on my bike, except for the winter months.

I've noticed that the liver spots on my skin have significantly faded or disappeared, I get by on about 5 hours sleep, have a lot more energy,
my teeth have stopped degrading and actually feel stronger, and the floaters in my vision have markedly decreased. My hearing has improved as well.
Also, I have seriously deteriorated knees, but the pain from walking has disappeared, and I'm hoping that maybe, just maybe, the bones will regenerate.
I've also seriously cut back on grains. A loaf of sprouted bread lasts about 6 weeks. I seem to be losing my appeal for anything made with grains.

My weight has dropped from 245lbs down to 214 over the past two years.

Oh yeah, and I've stopped losing my hair.

So, in a nutshell, the mainly predominant paleo diet, along with the supplements, seem to be working.

But, at 67 years, I might keel over anytime.
At least I'll die healthy, or healthier, anyway.

PS: I smoke about 20 home-rolled cigarettes a day. I've been a smoker since I was 14.

I used to take a whole variety of supplements but have narrowed it down to these few common ones:

Morning:

Betaine HCL (hydrochloric acid)
Ox Bile
Acetyl L-Carnitine
Extra Nutrients by Thorne (only 3 caps)
Gingko Biloba
2g of ascorbic acid power in 1L of distilled water with a bit of salt (drink throughout day)

Night:

R-Lipoic Acid
N-Acetyl Cysteine
Extra Nutrients
Magnesium
Potassium
Fish Oil

So basically morning consists of things to help my digest all that fat needed for fuel, and night time antioxidants and such to assist in the repair work that happens during sleep.

KristinLynne, I would ditch the psyllium husk immediately and read the part of this thread that relates to "The Fiber Menace" (starts here - http://cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php/topic,20771.msg236856.html#msg236856 ).
Supplemental fiber is a total gut destroyer, and psyllium is one of the worst culprits. Check out www.gutsense.org for more (it's the author's website).

Thanks dugdeep! I hadn't gotten that far in my reading but it is next. I really do appreciate all the help and suggestions while I'm trying to detox. :)

I am taking:

In the morning:
New Chapter multivitamin
magnesium citrate
vitamin c (ascorbic acid powder)
boron
burdock
fish body oil (omega 3)
spirulina
liquid kelp (iodine)
niacin
garlic

In the afternoon:
vitamin c (ascorbic acid powder)
fish body oil (omega 3)
burdock

In the evening:
melatonin
5-htp
spirulina
vitamin c (ascorbic acid powder)

I have taken supplements most of my adult life, and attempt to keep up with research about what may be necessary for my health. I started taking the ascorbic acid powder and the magnesium citrate after I read the threads on this forum about these supplements. I am learning so much, and thanks to all who have put this information and research on the forum to read. My next step is going to be a detox (after I've researched it enough, and read "Detox or Die"). Currently I drink an organic daily detox tea, but I would like to go a step further.

I am always experimenting with various supplements and super foods.

I currently have
Turmeric Powder
Ashwagandha
Astaxanthin
Cod liver oil
Cocoa powder
Maca Powder
Living Fuel Super greens and Berry
Warrior Force Warrior Foundation
Dragon Herbs TomKat
Magnesium
Resveratrol
Chorella

I also go on juicing binges with vegetables from time to time but it seems different people have different views on this with some being positive and some being negative so my opinion on whether or not I should do this is still up in the air.

The problem I can see with juicing is the high sugar content of vegetable juices the bad effects of which would outweigh any benefits.

Yeh Sugar is my main concern as well. I have debated diluting with water or using only super low sugar content vegetables. I used to juice grapes and apples along with veggies but the more I learn about the negative effects of excessive sugar the more I try to avoid it. Now if I have a sweet tooth I generally just take a tablespoon of some raw/organic honey but every once in awhile I give in and have something that is forbidden like cheesecake or cinnabon
