Wednesday July 9, 2014 - SMITHFIELD, N.Y. (AP) — Severe thunderstorms packing strong winds rolled through central New York, killing four people, destroying or damaging numerous houses and knocking out power to more than 70,000 utility customers, officials said Wednesday.
The deaths occurred in the rural town of Smithfield, between Syracuse and Utica, after the storms hit at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, the Madison County Sheriff's Office said.
Injuries and damage from fast-moving storms Tuesday were not limited to New York state. In Maryland, a child at a summer camp was killed by a falling tree. Three small tornadoes touched down in Ohio and at least one other was sighted in Pennsylvania, where more than 300,000 lost power at the peak of the storms.
In New York, at least four Smithfield homes were completely destroyed and numerous others were damaged,
Early Wednesday, about 72,000 homes and businesses were without power, most in central and northern New York.

SMITHFIELD, N.Y. (AP) — Officials in central New York said four people are dead and four homes have been destroyed in building collapses amid severe thunderstorms that rolled through the region.
A spokesman for the Madison County emergency management office said the deaths were reported just after 7 p.m. Tuesday in the hard-hit community of Smithfield, located between Syracuse and Utica. No further details were immediately available.

(Reuters) - A tornado touched down near Indianapolis on Tuesday afternoon damaging two dozen houses and causing no reported injuries as a severe weather front brought heavy winds and rain to the area, authorities said.
Mike Ryan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, said witnesses reported that the tornado had touched down west of Indianapolis near Plainfield, Indiana.
In Plainfield, one house was severely damaged and about 20 houses sustained minor damage due to the tornado, which also downed trees, police spokeswoman Jill Lees said. No injuries were reported, she said.
Three houses in Wayne Township west of Indianapolis and several houses within the city were also damaged, the Indianapolis Star newspaper reported.

KENTWOOD, Mich. (AP) — A severe thunderstorm packing winds estimated at more than 80 mph spawned a tornado, injured at least six people and caused significant damage to homes in western Michigan, officials said Monday, and storms with tornadoes damaged some homes in Iowa.
A fast-moving thunderstorm intensified in Michigan late Sunday over Kentwood, just south of Grand Rapids, the National Weather Service said.
Touching down in Byron Center, the twister traveled just over 6 miles and was 300 to 400 yards wide, according to the weather service website.
The tornado's winds reached the 100-110 mile per hour range, weather service forecaster Brian Meade told The Associated Press on Monday. He said the impact was serious but limited in area.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A tornado-producing storm that hit central Indiana on Tuesday damaged several homes in Indianapolis and its outskirts, downed power lines and uprooted trees, authorities said.
It was one of several thunderstorms that sprang up in southwestern Indiana near Terre Haute and moved northeast toward Indianapolis, becoming more severe along the way. No injuries were reported. National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Ryan said the tornado struck in the afternoon in Hendricks County just southwest of Indianapolis and caused extensive damage to at least three homes.
The twister, an EF1 on the 0-to-5 enhanced Fujita scale with an estimated wind speed of 100 mph, tossed a camper onto the roof of a home and destroyed the camper and about half of the roof, according to a storm survey team's report. Strong winds from the storm also damaged more than 200 cars at an auto auction site, the weather service said.
